Tombstone vigilantes ride shotgun to keep the strangers out
From Chris Ayres in Los Angeles
THEY will arrive today, more than 1,000 in total, at the Tombstone Tumbleweed newspaper office on Toughnut Street in a corner of the Arizona desert. After being given an “orientation lecture”, the armed men will move south, towards the Mexican border.
President Bush calls them vigilantes. Vicente Fox, the Mexican President, says that they are breaking international law. Civil rights campaigners say that they are supported by white supremacist and other hate organisations.
But the leaders of the so-called Minuteman Project describe themselves as American patriots who can no longer tolerate the number of illegal immigrants who cross the US border every day.
And so, for April, the Minutemen, including at least 40 pilots and 16 private aircraft, will patrol the border all day and all night, reporting illegal immigrants to the federal agents via walkie-talkies.
“Just think of us as a neighbourhood watch group. We are looking for illegal crossings by aliens. When we spot them, we will report them to the proper authorities,” James Gilchrist, the head of the Minutemen Project, said in an interview with a website called V-Dare (named after Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World).
“We will not be confrontational with anyone.”
However, he said “each volunteer will be solely accountable for his or her actions”.
The US Border Patrol caught about 1,260 people a day last year trying to enter the United States illegally along a 260-mile stretch of the Arizona border, known to federal agents as “the Tucson sector”.
Cheap Mexican labour continues to put Americans out of work, but it has also helped American companies to compete with overseas rivals.
Politicians, meanwhile, are keen to avoid upsetting the Hispanic vote. The Minutemen have claimed a limited victory, however, after the Bush Administration said that it would deploy extra border patrol agents to Arizona.
Not since the days of the Gunfight at the OK Corral has Tombstone seen such civil unrest. The town (population: 1,504) was the location of the legendary showdown between the City Marshall, Wyatt Earp, his friend Doc Holliday and a group of cowboys.
The Minutemen’s website tells volunteers that “the main opposition to anything we do here will come out of Tucson”, in Arizona. It goes on to say: “We have about 30,000 Hispanics, mostly Mexican-American, with most of them concentrated in the town of Douglas.
“They’ve been here ever since the US Cavalry sorted out the Apaches and know quite well just how unsuccessful the Spaniards and Mexicans were.”
Meanwhile, members of a Central American gang, MS-13, have reportedly been issued orders to “teach a lesson” to the Minutemen volunteers.
Mr Gilchrist said: “We’re not worried because half of our recruits are retired trained combat soldiers. And those guys are just a bunch of punks.”

Too bad I don\'t live in Arizona I would sign up. 1000 + people rotating throughout the month should be a sign to the government, especially Bush, deploy the National Guard to secure our southern border because a few extra Border Patrol agents aren\'t gong to be that effective. The Border Patrol lacks the manpower and I can understand them getting upset with the Minutemen, it brings to light the fact they can\'t do their job.

Man....I see trouble. I\'ve read another article where Aryans and Neo Nazis are trying to get in on the action.
-
Post the link Gman. This is group of vets so I highly doubt there would let any white supremist group in. Then again maybe they should let them in to hunt down members of MS-13 and let them kill each other. ;)

The link was at a Mexican website. However, they quoted an American who was concerned about their recruits. The page is lost to me since this was 2 days ago.

When this story first came up, I remember that someone posted a link to Stormfront where a lot of the guys over there were excited about signing up.
Personally, I see nothing good coming from this.

Since the government won\'t keep them out who will? I don\'t think this is going to last long and I see it more of away to put pressure on the government to close our southern border to illegal immigration.
-
If the Arizona police or the US government doesn\'t end up posting people to watch the guys watching the border I expect there to be casualties.

If there are a few gungho cops, imagine the number of vigalantes who\'ll be a bit too trigger happy. I\'m all into not allowing illegals in the country, but I\'d rather see them get through alive and shipped back than shot dead on US soil.
I might give Miss Tiq a hard time coz of his stance on illegals but I don\'t hate illegals. Not saying you do but there\'s a limit to what Americans should do. I say let the trained border patrols handle this.

I heard about the MS-13 group making the threats and appereantly they are good at keeping their promises.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7244879/site/newsweek/
In recent weeks, authorities have made strides against MS-13: a gang leader accused of orchestrating a December bus bombing in Honduras that killed 28 people was arrested in Texas in February, and a recent seven-city sweep by ICE netted more than 100 reputed MS-13 members. But Robert Clifford, head of the new national task force, says "no single law-enforcement action is really going to deal the type of blow" necessary to dismantle the gang. No one is more interested in busting up MS-13 than leaders of the Latino community, who live with the fear and fallout of the gang\'s savage actions.
Gman and Black Samurai are right though. Nothing good will come from it and confrontation will probably happen. And ALOT of racist, white supremacist are taking this thing as an opportunity to take "action" and join in the "fight"

Thats odd, it seems to be working - zero border activity in the area that these folks have set up. Imagine that.
Just put the National Guard down there along the border and the problem is solved. If the Iron Curtain worked some troops and a nice wall could work as well, but the difference would be instead of keeping people in, it would keep them out.

Oh no one of them was given a t-shirt and water and then had his picture taken! Oh the humanity!
Now watch the ACLU is going to sue to say his "civil rights" were violated. Well maybe I shouldn\'t laugh because knowing the screwed up justice system we have the Socialist ACLU agenda this just might happen.
Meanwhile, Border Patrol apprehensions of illegal immigrants have dropped notably in the Naco area since civilian volunteers began gathering there. Agency spokesmen credit an increased presence by Mexican authorities south of the border and say it\'s too soon to tell whether the volunteers are having an impact.
Nah it wouldn\'t have anything to do with fed up American citizens watching their own border would it? Mexican Authorities are incompetent.

O god yay
FUCK IMMIGRANTS

You mean ILLEGAL immigrants, right?

Now the Minutemen are preparing to expand to four states and the ACLU has sent observers to monitor them. Apparently these ACLU "legal observers" have been smoking pot while "observing."

If you go by this, then we need people taking other matters of law and justice in their hands.
It doesn\'t work that way, it\'s the goverment\'s job to protect our borders and no group of vets should take this responsibility on.

Yet our government is not securing our borders. I major thing I disagree with Bush on is his weak approach to the borders and immigration.
The Minutemen are achieving their goal by bringing attention to this issue along with curbing some border crossings.

I agree the Goverment is doing a complete shit job on securing the borders, but we can\'t let citizens do it. The Goverment fails to do a lot of things right, do you want everyday citizens taking over on that also?

The government isn\'t doing shit about these fucked up roads in Boston so I am organizing a ragtag group of renegade carpenters to fill the potholes with sand and old sneakers.
The Sandy Sole Experience™ is coming to a road near you (if you live in the Boston metro area)

I was just in Boston for 4 days. The roads and pedestrians scare me.
