Title: Half-Life 2 Xbox Info & new screens!
Post by: pstwo on April 11, 2005, 09:43:22 PM
Never played the PC version.  I freaking can\'t wait!

Quote
Jan from our affiliated German site, Half-Life2.de, yesterday posted the exciting news from the Official XBox Magazine who has the first details on the Xbox version of Half-Life 2.
Improved lightning effects - It looks better than on the PC
Loading times don\'t differ from the PC version due to a new streaming technology
The controls have been adapted to the joypad and auto-aiming has been included
They are still working on the airboat and buggy controls because it is too difficult to steer and shoot at the same time
The Source Engine has been adapted to Xbox so that Xbox developers can license it now
The textures are less detailed than on the PC because of the reduced RAM (only 64 MB)
There will be NO multiplayer in the game, not even via Xbox Live
It\'s not yet announced if it will be possible to download new content, but there was no clear answer
Estimated release date: Summer 2005 (for the US)
Interesting news for those XBox owners out there. It certainly shoots down a lot of rumours in flames that were starting to insist that Half-Life 2 would become a next-generation title on the XBox 2.

For further information on HL2: XBox catch the latest Official XBox Magazine in the USA or see the original news here.

Looks like SHIT

Do yourself a favour and ditch the X boullocks and buy a Entry grade PC.

Then play this game the way it was meant to be.

On a serious note... PStwo you should consider going for the PC version.

As you get

Better GFX\'s
Better Frame Rate
Online HL2 death match
Counter Strike source.
Better Control system (WASD + Mouse >>>> Controller)

And if you wait a while

Day of Defeat Source
the HL2 new chapter (might be Alex or even Barney)
more source mods than you can can shake a stick at.

^yeah, I mean cant you afford a measly $2,000 for a computer? obviously your computer is inferior and cant do the job, and there is nothing else better to spend your money on.

You  don\'t have to have a powerful PC to run HL2.

Even older PC\'s can run it and it still looks Fantastic.

unless PStwo has a 386 or something :p

I have a fairly nice machine that only set me back a little over 1k

you don\'t need the best of everything to run it, just a decent video card and competent CPU.

Games on consoles look like ass to me anymore.  Guess i\'ve become a PC snob :(

But i\'m sure you\'ll enjoy it on Xbox, it was an amazing experience for me from beginning to end.

What\'s the solution for someone who goes to school full time, and has only a part time job which just barely pays the rent and other expenses?

$1000 PC for games vs. $50 game for my Xbox

Hmmmm...

Well, I dare say it\'ll look better when you play it. Those look like magazine scans.  Which would explain the graininess.

Otherwise it\'d look like it running on my GForce2. :p

Seeing as how you have plenty of time to work full time when you\'re full time at school.  And if you work full time that still doesn\'t gurantee having enough money for school, car, food, rent, then a computer on the side.

ridiculous

Unfortunately I have an ego to serve, and to keep it up I have to make good grades.  I care about my academic success more than how pretty the games are that I\'m playing.

Besides, Half-Life 2 will undoubtedly be released on one if not all the next generation systems.  That version will look superior to whatever rig you have going now and it will end up costing much less to acquire.

:p

by the time the next round of consoles come out HL2 will be old hat (it already is in the PC world).  And I don\'t think it will be released for them either.

Plus consoles can\'t match the resolutions that  PC monitor can crank out.

We\'ll just have to wait and see I suppose...

12:49 Mention of Half-Life 2 usually makes the crowds go wild - well, we at the office do anyway; and we feel we\'re not alone - and earlier in the month there was particular excitement surrounding babble stating that Valve Software is planning to bring its FPS sequel to consoles other than Xbox.
Reportedly commenting that a PS2 version of Half-Life 2 is in the offing, the developer also appeared to let slip in an interview with French media (although translation caused validity issues) that plans are afoot to bring the game to PlayStation 3 and GameCube\'s successor as well.

Desiring the official word straight from the horse\'s mouth, we contacted Valve Software to discover what\'s what.

Speaking to the developer\'s Doug Lombardi, he initially re-confirmed that Half-Life 2 has been announced for Xbox, then went on to clarify the PS2 situation, saying that: "At this point, there are no plans to publish a version [of Half-Life 2] for either of Sony or Nintendo\'s current systems."
Of course, this means Valve\'s sequel looks like it will remain exclusive to Xbox in this generation of consoles - somehow, we think Microsoft might be smiling. However, it is highly possible that we\'ll see Half-Life 2 appearing on the next machines from Sony and Nintendo.

When questioned on the HL2 for PlayStation 3 and GameCube 2 reports, Lombardi told us: "Valve is obviously interested in hearing more about their [Sony and Nintendo] next-generation plans and discuss the possibilities of doing something with them."

Looking beyond Half-Life 2, it certainly wouldn\'t be foolish to speculate that other titles in the Valve Software stable, such as Counter-Strike, will also appear on Sony and Nintendo\'s next consoles.

In the meantime, we\'ll keep eyes peeled and ears open for news on Half-Life 2 on Xbox...

Most good FPS should of some co-op mode. Perfect Dark, Halo, just cut the screen of the single player mode is solid adds a whole new dimension to the game.

Halo wouldn\'t be worth paying for without co-op lol.

Yeah, they did drag on a bit long.

Especially when you had to wait 5 minutes for the game to load every 5 minutes you played.

The actual FPS gameplay was great, the driving sections was long and tedious. I understand it was suppose to give a variety but all it done was broke any motivation the game had established.

NICE textures!  Best looking Xbox game!

Here thus, only for you, the first images in-game Half-Life 2 on Xbox. These photographs snuff starting from a playable version of the software are, certainly, of average quality, but they enable you all the same to assess the quality of textures, the level of detail of the decorations, returned water or the modeling of the characters. These photographs also make it possible to support the denial of certain rumours which implied that Half-Life 2 would rather be born on Xbox 360, because the software turns indeed on Xbox. The FPS of Valve Software would be planned for the summer 2005, in the United States.

IGN hands on!!

More here! (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/608/608385p1.html)

Quote
Officially, Valve plans to release Half-Life 2 in late August 2005 as a purely single-player game, sans the multiplayer. Valve is developing the Xbox version entirely in-house with a 10-15 person team, using streaming technology to make it work, and it\'s bringing the entire singe-player game to the Xbox. No shortcuts, no missing levels, no futzing around. Valve suggested there might be downloadable content later on down the line, but wouldn\'t specify exactly what that would be.

Make sure to check our Video Interview (http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/552/552580/vids_1.html) with Jay Stelly, and our direct-feed videos (http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/552/552580/vids_1.html) too.

Technical Wizardry
Half-Life 2 was a massive game on the PC; 4 GB to be accurate. Attempting to bring such an enormous game to the relatively small Xbox, with its 8 GB hard-drive and its 64 MB of RAM, requires a huge amount of gusto and bravado, plus the technical chops to back it up. But we are talking about Valve, who continues to innovative, pioneer, and take creative leaps at every opportunity it can. So, it\'s not only possible, but the Seattle, WA-based developer is doing it -- and plans to improve several areas to boot.

Using in-house developed streaming technology, a difficult programming technique that Rockstar North uses for all the Grand Theft Auto titles and which has been used in numerous Legacy of Kain games, Valve can deliver a high-polygon, incredibly detailed environment in 480p to Microsoft\'s system. Valve\'s version of the technology enables the team to economically deliver a more exact amount of data required for a particular section in the game. The textures, models, and audio will all stream, while other parts of the game will be either pre-loaded or be pulled from the Xbox\'s hard-drive. This technique is much different from the usual PC technique, which is to fill up a massive bucket of data and dump it all at once on screen, using as much RAM as needed.

I don\'t remember what I said earlier about it, but this game should be played on pc only.  If not you\'re just cheating yourself.  Steal a pc if you have to, do something.

Like i said earlier, some incredible dev could probably make it look almost that good on ps2.

Maybe not, but it would be interesting if they could.
