Title: My Future
Post by: SirMystiq on April 25, 2005, 07:35:24 PM
I know many of you are in college, went to college, are planning on going to college or dropped out of college...Or at least have seen a college.

I\'m about to graduate. Big things are coming my way and I have never, EVER, been more confused in my life. I got into Notre Dame, SMU, Texas Tech, UT and the University of Detroit Mercy.

I decided to go to SMU mainly because of their incredibly sweet financial aid offer. Notre Dame sucked a big nut on the financial aid part and the rest are a bunch of gay public schools. I had my heart set on SMU anyways.

Now here comes the end of the year and I\'m ready, I think, to start this "college life" I have NO idea what I want to study or do. For many, the problem is that they have TOO many interest. My problem isn\'t that, I have many interest, just that my interest are strong enough.

Im excellent in math and CADD I can draw up plans for a new axle or a house in seconds. I can solve whatever damn integral you throw at me with a few minutes. I can recite to you the entire unit circle backwards and forward twenty times. It\'s all good, but I\'m not, how should I say, excited about math. I like it, I\'m good at it, but I don\'t see me doing this crap forever. This mainly has to do with my wish to get a ME major or maybe a CE major.

My other major draw is a Political Science major so that way I can get into Law school and be a lawyer or a crooked politician. I like the stuff, I like the concepts and the opportunities, but grrr I can\'t decide.

Psshhhhh, so I suppose the question is, for you all that have been in my shoes, how the hell did you ever come up with answers to your questions like mine?????

you don\'t have to pick anything

hell you can get a BA degree without a major

skip polysci tho, thats the long, hard road.  if you\'re not into politics by now, don\'t bother (celebrities are exempt)

gay public schools?

Well seeing as you aren\'t really going to have to pick a major your first year, go undeclared and take all your GE classes.  Talk to people in those particular majors. See what you like, what you don\'t, and decide from there.

For me, I got accepted into the number one undergrad Architecture school in the nation (and it\'s public bitches).  It kind of just got decided for me.  Always keep this in mind, never do what you love, save that for a hobby.

I thought about it. But nope. That schools is immense, I would get no one on one with teachers, I would be a number.

SMU is small and private and has an excellent rep with teachers knowing their students by face and name not by number and grade.

NEVER DO WHAT YOU LOVE?

You have just completely contradicted everything people have said to me.

"Do what your passion is because your gonna do it for the rest of your life"

I know I don\'t have to choose but I like making my life complicated.

I was just joking about the "gay" public schools. But a private is no match for a public school. Specially in Texas.

Texas Tech is hick town. I have yet to see that many rednecks with that country accent anywhere. The school is in the middle of nowhere and you have to drive through towns that in my case(mexican) I get stared at by the locals.

Texas A&M is ALOT worst. But they do have nice people.

Their are just not my kind of schools. Texas Tech is known for their deliciously beautiful Caucasian females which I adore. At SMU, their gonna be RICH CAUCASIAN GIRLS!!! I love the ones with blonde hair and blue eyes...

ANYWAYS.

I guess I should also tell yo uthat the Engineering department at SMU is offering me a 8K dollar scholarship if I major in whatever they offer. Which is a major draw and that would allow me to have my entire first year free of loans. But then again the Liberal Arts college(Political Science) is offering me 5K and that would mean one 3K dollar Stafford loan.

Money, money, money...

At least around here, I\'ve seen many people get burned by doing what they love.  I\'m not saying pick something you hate, but doing what you love can get you in trouble too.  As for your public school comment, you are right, private schools are no match for the might of a public school ;).

And the rich girl comment...watch your ass, if it\'s anything like the ones around here...they have the rich bitch syndrome.  They won\'t give you a second glance.

If I were you, I\'d take the engineering route (you get more money).  You won\'t be pushed into staying since most of your classes will most likely be Gen Ed., and  if you don\'t like it after your freshman year, switch.

im in the same position. Except i suck ass at math and..everything else in school.

so im pretty much 100% lost about what i want to do.

music interest me but its impossible to make that into a living. Audio engineering came up but again..math..ohms..omegas..physics..retardation..doesnt mix.

My selection was between U of M, MSU, and Central Michigan.  I decided to go with MSU because they generally have everything to study so to speak.  U of M was too expensive and lacked a CJ major, Central is a shitty school and only considered it cuz I would have went there for peanuts.  I choose MSU for the diversity in majors and courses.  You will find your niche after you get involved at a university.  Get intouch with people there, join clubs, go to meetings, and you will find someone you like.

What you said about UT isn\'t at all true.  I have a friend who just finished up there, and that wasn\'t at all the case.

As for your major...if you haven\'t even started school yet, don\'t even try to decide.  Go to school, take classes in your areas of interest, and see if anything grabs you.  I thought I knew what I wanted to do before I got to college, got here, started to persue it, and knew pretty quickly it definitely wasn\'t the thing for me.

Most students don\'t know what they REALLY want to do until their sophomore year. So you have a little time. Take the core curriculum, see what interests you and pursue it.

As for not pursuing something you enjoy, don\'t listen to Phil. If you go after something you don\'t like because it pays more you end up being miserable with a fat wallet. You should pursue what you enjoy because regardless of the salary, your enthusiasm will show in your work and eventually pay off in the long run.

Another thing to take into consideration is that you could pretty much major in anything if you plan on going to grad/law/business school.

Post by: Phil on April 25, 2005, 09:31:47 PM
I knew I\'d get burned for saying that....but don\'t twist my words, I never said go for what pays more.  I simply said don\'t do what you absolutely love.  There is a difference between doing what you love and what you enjoy.  Do what you enjoy and save what you love for a hobby.  But then again, this is just from what I\'ve seen in a school that has a higher percentage of people of getting burned out of what they are doing than most.

Whell me being in Australia, I can\'t really give any advice on what to do in American universities. I don\'t really have to worry about tuition fees because all universities are funded by the federal government (google HECS). And because if this, there\'s no \'private school\'/\'public school\' issue. And WTF is all this Major Minor crap? So here\'s my old man stick on what to do with your life:

If you have any credit points to spare, do units for a foreign language. Do enough so you can speak it comfortably and fluently. Take any opportunities that allows you to go to the country of that language (ie exchange program, in-country unit, drug deal that can give you enough money for the trip). And make sure that language is JAPANESE. :D :D :D :D

I\'m still in the process of doing all this myself, but I\'m encouraged by the stories of those who\'ve gone before me. :}

And what Black Samurai said.

Sorry about that. That is actually a really good distinction. You want a job that you enjoy doing but if your job is doing something that you LOVE then there is the chance that you can get burned out.

It is rough when your passion becomes your source of income because that love is sometimes replaced by necessity.

Agree with Phil.
Don\'t do what you love, it ruins a good hobby. Accept that work is going to be miserable no matter what.

Look on the bright side, you are hispanic. You have a better chance of gettin\' a job out of college than per say Bozco, due to equal rights and havin\' to higher a certain percent of the minority\'s..So, basically, you can be a complete fuck up and still get paid.
Good luck.

Yeah, I\'m just lucky I guess. My friend, who is graduating number 3 in my class, is also going to SMU. She decided to take Spanish lessons because recently she was not given a job due to her lack of Spanish. It was for some insurance agency with most of it\'s custumers being hispanics. They hired her best friend instead, who just happens to be Hispanic and know Spanish. Tough break.

Have any of you done stuff like Co-op and stuff?
SMU engineering is huge on that and I just want to know how hard it is to cope with Co-op and school.

we rotate between quarters with co-op.  I\'m never in school and working at the same time. The drawback....I don\'t get summers off.

No no wait!!... I know what happened... I used the term \'graduation\' to mean I finish my PhD, i.e. i\'ll be licensed (4 years of university). Now I have the opportunity to get the doctor degree with 2 more years (6 years of university in total).
