Title: Ubuntu - Linux for Humans!
Post by: fastson on April 26, 2005, 01:06:46 PM
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/

Today I installed it on my laptop. Pretty nice actually, comes with a nice "shell" (correct term? I\'m new to Linux :D ) and lots of useful software (Firefox, OpenOffice (very nice btw!) etc).

Now I\'m running the Live CD on my main computer just to try it out.

Anyone else tried it? Can you recommend any other like Ubuntu that perhaps isnt as heavy (for the sake of my laptop, he was almost killed by Windows, he\'s doing better under Linux).

This is something I could see myself installing on one of the stationary computers. Feels almost like starting all over again, which is fun cuz I miss the old Win 3.11 days "What does this do? No that does not sound good, CANCEL!" :D

Ubutu running on my laptop.

Running on my main rig from the Live CD.

Exactly.

> "Oh, I hate Windoze so much. M$ suxors. To bad I\'m too stupid to use an OS like LinUX. Wowzers! They made a LinUX for Dummies called "Ubuntu". Now I can be c00l and not use WinDoze."

Want to use Linux? Get a real Linux distro like Redhat or SuSe. However, if you are not going to use Linux to it\'s full potenial, then go back to Windows and quit wasting time.

i wouldn\'t say either is better, but if linux had 100x more gaming support, i\'d never touch another microsoft product

install fedora if you want something to play with and comes with alot of driver support in box.

go slackware when you\'re ready to learn something

Not true, not for me at least. The reason I even thought of this was that I remembered the old laptop. I had Win 2000 installed on it (even after startup I had ONE MB free in RAM memory!), thats why I tried Ubuntu (which after startup takes 40MB of RAM, giving 24MB free, nice improvement but it does not give too much room. Firefox easily eats up the space, going to try out the Dillo browser instead.)

On the plus side it gives me the oportunity to learn a new OS. The reason I havent gone to regular slim Linux is because of the major difference between that and Windows.

Ubuntu feels more like "home", a better place to start learning, and in the core its still Linux. You can launch the command line (?), like I had to when changing resolution and colour depth (a small challange in its own, compared to how easy it is in Windows) and setting up the internet connection.

When I get more used to it I\'ll try out the "real" Linux, adjusting to normal Linux going from Windows XP is a big jump.

Plus its always nice to see Linux become more user friendly, maybe it can steal market share from Windows.
But some people probably hate that idea.

Ubuntu is a step in the right direction if you ask me. :)

I think this program is a little too much for my laptop to handle. The 64MB is really a killer.

I might have to go with Xfce and install Ubuntu on one of the stationary. Interesting times ahead! :)

learn to click on on familiar looking icons?

You can launch the command line

yeah, launch it....

i don\'t mean to sound like an elitest prick (well, maybe a little), but this is not true "linux".   i see so many people boot off a knoppix live cd and think they\'re cool, but run right back to XP pro when thier sound card doesn\'t work.

im happy you\'re using something other than windows, but you\'re not learning anything.

really wanna learn?

download and burn debian distro

c:/format c: /y

install and figure out how to compile and configure drivers, samba, open office, ect

honestly, gaming is the last stranglehold that the windows environment holds, and it\'s not lasting

Yeah. ;)
No, I have learned a few command lines in the few hours I have used the software. That is what Im after.

Also the layout/structure is different.

Hehe, that might be. But for me its enough Linux right now. Everything is not (I forgot the correct word) "graphicalized" some things still require for you to use the terminal (thats it! not command line)

Suicide. ;)
It could be quite fun though, I would probably feel as newbish as when I got my first 486! :D

Probably.
As Linux becomes more user friendly and with impressive free software such as Open Office Windows should be scared.

Have they put a loop in their media players yet? Nope. Then no go here. That is my only real issue with linux distros. I like to loop my pr0n.

I seriously doubt there is going to be a place for gaming within Linux for years to come. Somthing about the fact that it is a free os maybe. Yes can run whine for some applications, but was sort of crappy. I also used somthing from trans-gaming I think that was geared more toward gaming applications. It worked, but not as well if had just slapped on windows.
