Worldwide sales of the Nintendo DS handheld shot through the five million mark in mid-March, putting the company well within its five to six million unit target for the full year to March 31st according to the latest figures from Nintendo of America.
The clarification of the global sales figures came after Nintendo UK caused some confusion yesterday with a press release which celebrated 200,000 sales of the console in the UK, but incorrectly stated the global sales figure as "over 3 million units".
Nintendo of America was quick to correct the error, pointing out that global sales actually passed the five million mark in mid-March - just after the European launch - and telling US website GameSpot that the firm is "on track" to meet its previous predictions of five to six million units sold through March.
That assertion is backed up by independent market research figures from bodies such as NPD (in the USA) and Media Create (in Japan), which agree that the DS passed the three million mark several months ago, and was closer to five million units than three even before the European launch in mid-March.
By contrast, the PlayStation Portable - which won\'t launch in Europe until September 1st, a full five months after its North American debut - had sold somewhere over 2.5 million units worldwide by the end of March, missing Sony\'s target of three million units by its financial year-end and placing global sales of the device at around half of what Nintendo\'s handheld has sold.

I must confess that I didn\'t think Nintendo would have much success with the DS, but not only have they managed to create a strong userbase in a relatively short amount of time but they also have me itching to buy one. Warioware, Yoshi\'s Touch n\' Go are great, and Kirby Cursed Canvas sounds like alot of fun.
As for the PSP comment, give it time...
-
DS just pwned PSP!
Neither have any decent games out for their system too. =/ Wtf are these dickheads playing.
-
Xbox 112
hahahahaha
-
that\'s pretty unusual. XBOX only sold 112? That\'s quite a low # there.

Yeah, about half of what it usually sells.:p
-
nevermind, its in japan. That may explains it.
-
I\'ll tell you what they\'re playing:

lol.

I am still waiting for a true reason to buy the Nintendo DS. The only thing that makes me want it is the new Castlevania being developed.
With that said, the G/F is suppose to get me one for my birthday, so I won\'t complain if that actually happens.
:D

never buying a DS
it\'s pointless when the next gameboy is coming anyways

How do you figure?
-
isn\'t DS the nextgen gameboy?
-
nope, it\'s a band-aid cause the PSP was coming out
-
If the new Gameboy isn\'t at least up to snuff with the PSP...
Yeah.

No, it\'s Nintendo\'s "third pillar."
That\'s why it doens\'t carry the Gameboy name, it\'s a new product meant to offer a different gameplay experience and appeal to a different audience than the Gameboy line.
From the looks of the sales it\'s found a solid niche.

  why split the handheld userbase to DS users and to "next gameboy" users?
I dont think Nintendo will find it necessary since the DS is doing well adn already shows nice graphics
-
Well, the next Gameboy iteration IS already being worked on.
But it sounds like with all the wifi talk, DS might be designed to link to Revolution. Maybe.
I\'d say it also depends greatly on the success of the PSP, which although it isn\'t competition....
Oh, and although I couldn\'t be any less interested in Nintendogs, Famitsu\'s four reviewers each gave it a perfect score... Huh.

I find this move weird
Except if they are planning to release it 3 or 4 years later the sooner
-
weird?
i call it a well thought out scam
how many times can consumers buy the same gameboy?
-
Why should someone who has already paid 150 for DS want to pay 150 for the next gameboy? How much "better" or different can it be/Nintendo present it so that the consumer will want to buy one
-
Nintendo sucks for doing this to us...
-
^^^Are they forcing you to buy it?
-
I\'m just talking about the confusing handheld releases. They can\'t force me to do sh^t. The only thing this is making me do is not buy their products.
-
You people obviously haven\'t played the DS, it is a different product than the Gameboy.
With the DS you should expect more games like Kirby: Cursed Canvas, Yoshi\'s Touch \'n Go, Warioware, etc.
With the new gameboy you\'ll see games like what the Gamecube is offering, both in gameplay and graphics. At least that\'s the rumor. As Eik said, it\'s supposed to complement the Revolution in some way and I\'ve read it will extend the life of the GC as well...we\'ll see.

if that\'s the case that\'s retarded..what one system\'s for kids and the other\'s for adults?...two handhelds? i don\'t buy handhelds, but this reasoning doesn\'t make sense to me...

Do you know anything about the DS? Dual screen/touch screen ring any bells?
Now compare that to the Gameboy Advanced.
Two different type of handhelds for two different audiences, adult or kids. The DS will appeal to those who like the touch screen aspect, and the new Gameboy will appeal to those who want more traditional games on the go. There\'s obviously a market for the type of games the DS offers since the touch games are doing so well.
Why is this so difficult?
-
actually played the DS at the mall one day, felt like it was gonna break in my hands.

Really? I thought it was a bit too bulky. I look forward to when they redesign it sometime, and hopefully make it thinner.
-
they will
just have to remove the 2nd screen, and call it the gameboy advanced color 2 special edition

Heh, there is a new Gameboy Advanced model due out this year.

it\'s not difficult, it\'s just that if the ds is doing so well why make another handheld? i mean does the ds make only touch in go games? i don\'t think so...they can also make these traditional games on the ds...

Because it was meant to create a new market, kind of like how the Virtual Boy was not meant to replace the Gameboy.

The touch gaming is its purpose. The fact that it can play both traditional Gameboy games and touch screen games just broadens its appeal.
The next Gameboy will be a different product, and I\'m guessing it will share some similarities with the PSP in media functions. It will be as powerful, if not more, than the PSP. Plus, as Eik said, it will play with the Revolution some how.
You people should know by now that handheld gaming is growing in popularity, and what\'s wrong with trying to captitalize on that with two different products?

nice pic i found, the legacy of the ripoff

ok i got it now at least from a marketing standpoint...milk the cow till it\'s dry blah blah blah...and this new gameboy will interact somehow with the new nintendo console...it\'s almost like having the ps2 and that psx thingy over in japan that totally bombed...why have two products that do almost basically the same thing? now before we go back and forth on this i understand fully what you are sayin\'
like i stated before i could care less about the handheld genre, from a general standpoint i don\'t see why the ds couldn\'t have had the features you stated that are bound for the new gameboy. but then that would go back to the milkin\' the cow theory....
i mean it\'s not that serious i just don\'t think someone at nintendo was like "the ds is doing extremely well... now let\'s make the new gameboy with features we could\'ve made with the ds" but hey if the consumers buy it, it will be a win win situation...

I suppose it is in a sense. I think it would be more accurate to say it\'s tapping into a new market, because if it wasn\'t, at least from Nintendo\'s point of view, they would be eating into their own sales of the Gameboy. (Which may or may not happen depending on how effectively they can differentiate the two through marketing)
The PSX didn\'t do anything for gaming though, it was a Playstation with some non-gaming related features. The DS is all about gaming, and in a distinct direction than that of the Gameboy.
The DS is catering to a different audience, and it\'s quite obvious Nintendo made a good call this time around as opposed to their attempt with the Virtual Boy.
To avoid any further confusion I\'d suggest you wait to see what Nintendo has in store for the next Gameboy. They\'ll be able to tell you more about it than I can.

Difference being....
How many of this was MUST BUY? Most was just revised models .
There was the Gameboy / Gameboy Color / Gameboy Advance. Anything else was revisions to the hardware, correct? Thus, you didn\'t really have to buy an SP or a THIN model.
Just think of them as revised hardware, like a PSone or PSTwo.
-
GameBoy SP is so leet still. :p Best handheld so far.

So basically it will offer better graphics than DS but with less gameplay oportunities(thanks to the dual screen and touch screen) than the DS?because I cant think of any thing better the "next" gameboy can offer in terms of gameplay the DS cant
-
No one knows anything about the successor to the GameBoy except that it\'s being worked on.
We don\'t know how many screens it will have, how many buttons, how powerful, what games, time frame, compatibility, connectivity, plans, business model, pricepoint, software, physical design, or anything.
We just know that Nintendo is always doing work in some respect on its next generation. That goes for home consoles and handhelds.
DS is the wifi player right now as will be GameCube most likely. So it\'ll be easiest to link them, but that\'s just speculation at this point.
And that\'s it.
As for the difference in GBA and DS, clips, the DS games are more quirky. If you want something different (not neccesarily better) you buy the DS and try it out.
It has nothing to do with being a kid or an adult unless you\'re that affected by marketing campaigns that you think everything by Nintendo is for toddlers. Then it\'d just be for kids.
eh...
