Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also supporrd CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R. It also confirmed the machine would be backwards compatible all the way to the original PlayStation.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz, a detachable 2.5 inch HDD slot, six usb 2.0 ports, Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, Compact flash slot, 2 hdmi outputs, 1 av multi out, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-gigabit Ethernet built in port...

so Xbox goes concave and sony does to exact opposite.

Sony also unveiled the PS3\'s graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.

Right now at Sony\'s E3 2005 press conference, the president of Sony Entertainment Europe is showing The Getaway on PS3.

Details are still coming in, but the early word is that the thing is bloody amazing and looks like no digital recreation of London ever has. While the demonstration was devoid of driving or shooting, the game did display some incredible character models walking about a highly detailed English environment. Now, if only the power of PS3 can work out that poor camera just a bit.

They also ran the computer generated Spider-Man model from the actual Spider-Man 2 movie in real-time on PS3

Is that real?Looks ugly to me.They should have had the same logo as the PS2 only with 2 changed to 3 IMO.

They also ran the computer generated Spider-Man model from the actual Spider-Man 2 movie in real-time on PS3. Amazing.

Speak of the devil

May 16, 2005 - The first thing my editor-in-chief Jeremy Dunham said when Electronic Arts\' super producer Kudo showed Fight Night Round 3 on PS3 was, "It looks fugging awesome." Of course, he didn\'t actually say fugging, but you get the idea.

The game, according to our boys, looks absolutely amazing. "Totally real," in fact.
Dunham described a couple of fighters going at it, but didn\'t elaborate on who they were. He did describe facial rendering technology that allowed for physics on skin and bones that could actually break.

More details to follow.

Guys the ps2 looked better aesthetically, plus that controller must be a joke, because if that\'s the real deal, I\'m pissing my pants here. Come On aren’t any of you pissed off at this new Controller, it\'s absolutely ridicules

Also XDR has always looked promising, Personally I am still awaiting it for the pc. My question is How come M$ never incorporated the XDR tech for the Xbox2 (360) Personally I like Sony\'s route of using 256 of super fast XDR mixed with the other half gddr3.

Can\'t wait to get more info on the PS3. Either way boys it looks like both consoles are going to kick some serious ASS.

Honestly, I think the design looks nice, but I wouldn\'t mind if it looks like PS2 with the flat top.  This top curve is okay but that give me my first concern which is...

it looks similiar to Bose system which is crappy.  And we all know Bose sucks and overpriced their stuff to fool consumers to thinking is a great product...

I hope PS3 doesn\'t influence poeple into liking Bose...please no...

Heh, it takes a lot more to piss me off than the controller of a videogame system.  It looks fine to me.  It may take some getting used to but it has buttons, it has sticks, a directional pad, so I\'ll be fine. :)

I would rather they not screw with the controllers either.

Theonly thing I ever wanted tweaked on the orginal PS controllers was the positioning of the lower shoulder buttons. they should be pointed down slightly under the controller for a more natural fit to your finger placement.

but the specs on the machine sound good. At least Sony decided that 4mb of Vram wasn\'t enough . Heck 512 mb of ram will be sweet.
Title: PS3 announced

i new with xdr sony would only have 256mb of ram. still should be a sweet though.

I new both console would be simular in performance

edit: I forgot they added 256 of vram.

there\'s 512 mb\'s of Memory

256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz

and

256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

I agree the machines won\'t be far apart from each other.

I\'m sure polyphony used GT4 to make the footage. They port the information over to PS3 hardware then up the resolution and insert better textures among other tweaks.

It\'ll be awhile before developers get the final dev kits and start getting the tools they need to put the finishing touches on their games.

How things change.  It\'s the opposite of this gen.  The PS3 is bigger and ugly, but has more power.  It also has the worse controller I\'ve ever seen.

Fanboys everywhere are scrambling having slagged the xbox since release over it\'s size, aesthetics adn clunky controller.

This PS3 is just nasty looking and don\'t get me started on EITHER next generation controller.

According to IGN:

PS3 About 13.5" x 3.25"
Xbox360 About 10.25" x 2.5"

And there\'s a pic of Kutaragi holding the damned thing.  It looks pretty fucking huge.

That pic is not to proper scale, besides the dimensions u posted says it all, if indeed they are 100% accurate.

Regardless, I am assuming that 3rd parties will produce mimic ps2 controllers with what ever new features the new one includes.

One more thing which I feel is important to mention. Considering that Sony has ample time before the ps3 launch, if indeed the new ps3 controller stirs up a hornets nest with the consumers, I\'m sure that Sony would consider redesigning or altering the controller to better please it\'s potential customers. What I am a bit perplexed about is that a massive and successful Console game maker "SONY" would botcher up an already well established Controller PS2(granted it defiantly could use improvement) Maybe that design is not final or we must also take into account that at this point in time we know very little about it other that the picture provided. My personal initial opinion based on the pic is that it feels as if Sony has moved backwards in it\'s design and functionality. To be fair I will have to reserve my final judgment until I read the E3 user opinions plus when I actually get that sucker in my hands.

WTF is wrong with you byatches... bitch bitch bitch. Go back to masturbating.

The PS3 is a beast. It\'s sexy. The controller... not so much, but then buy an uoriginal one, if it really bugs you that much (not that any of you have tried it).

2 GFLOPS... 1024p output... etc. etc. etc. How the hell can you NOT be excited? I guess you should just go back to playing Ping Pong because it\'s the only thing cool enough for you hardcore playas.

EDIT: The size isn\'t bad. Yeah it\'s bigger than Xbox 360, but it\'s not HUGE. Just look at the DVD slot and compare to the rest of the console.

EDIT2: Another plus is the BluRay drive. Up to 50 gigs is nice. :)

The console is not as sleek as I thought it would be, but the black one looks good enough.  I wish MS were doing the same thing with the 360.

The controller doesn\'t look too good, but I\'ll wait to have it in my hands before I say it Sux0rs or something like that.

The games look pretty; that pit stop of GT5 looks really nice, but the others are just good.  I\'m getting a bunch of red x\'s for everything else so I can\'t comment.

I\'d like to see some side shots of the controller, the more I look at it the more convinced I am that the buttons on top of it aren\'t buttons at all and the triggers we are used to aren\'t visible. The buttons are just very high up and close together on the controller resulting in a very awkvard finger position.

And the Spiderman font on the front has to go.

Post by: ddaryl on May 17, 2005, 06:52:46 AM
I wonder if the 2nd set of shoulder buttons might be underneath the controller. I always find that the L2 and R2 buttons on the PS controller were not in the best natural position. If they angles the R2 and L2 shoulder buttons to a 20 degree angle pointing down that would allow for a more natural feel IMO.

There also might be trigger styled buttons underneath, otherwise I don\'t think the controller will be as bad as some feel.

When I first saw the console i was thinking "what the hell is sony thinking" but the black version is looking pretty neat. I really liked the design of the ps2 and this looks nothing similar (not to say something has to look like a ps2 to have a good design).

The controller, on the other hand, im just not getting. I hope that sony isnt kicking themselves in the nads. The ps2 controller IMO was almost perfect. The analog sticks could have had a little bit of work and the controller could be made to be a little more durable but other than that It was my favorite controller this gen.

On the games, im a little scetchy. Ive watched most of the videos and the resolution was obviously fairly low on a couple, some of which seemed oddly pre rendered. Actually i dont fully remember what they look like at this point since when i saw them last night i was on the brink of falling asleep.

The press conference is iffy so far too (only 14 mins in). Sony\'s stiff corporate image compared to the xbox360 team definately hurts them as well as a few things.

Not sure I agree, it seems a little more ergonomic then the original controller design IMO.

I\'d have to give it a feel though. I personally do not see much if any problem with the design in general, people fear change.

Okay, someone needs a pants-on. Don\'t let the zipper nip you on your way back in.

I definitely think the D-Pad should stay where it is. It\'s a must for games that require digital precision (fighting games, puzzle games, etc.) and I like it how the analog sticks are level to each other. More precision to the sticks though, the DS2 sticks were still a bit too wobbly.

I\'ve spent a few hours looking through E³ footage. Impressive/intresting stuff on the PS3 front. The Box360 combo platter seemed less intriguing. (not by means of quality technical performance, but the games line-up)

Damn, I said BLACK! Black is sexayh.

EDIT: It\'s funny how everyone\'s just playing it safe, showing titles with excess visual flare. Nothing too original on show for the next gen consoles. At least in the reports I\'ve witnessed thus far.

Shadow of the Colossus is the only game I\'ve got my eyes on right now. Magickal. And We Love Katamari. And maybe something else.

I CAN\'T BELIEVE IT\'S AN EDIT: Doesn\'t anyone else think the "PlayStation 3" font looks a tad too similar to the one used in the Spiderman movie titles?

God this pad sucks.

Riddle me this, why does almost every hardware manufacturer insist on making the D-pad a disc, rather that just 4 arrows like the PS controller. I\'ve yet to come by a circular D-pad that\'s at least remotely reliable.

These "Boomerangs", as some have dubbed them, have existed through the ages, emerging periodically from their dank dwellings when mankind has been least prepared to take them into their hearts.

Once again this time has dawned, and with the advent of Sony\'s next console, people can finally grab a "Boomerang" of their own and go knock down some of those vile kangaroos and other anomalous animals that keep kicking down our garden gnomes. If only people would finally see that these banana-like apparatus are not to be feared, but cherished. There is yet need for truly ergonomic marsupial-slaughtering devices before we can evolve to the über-beings we deserve to be. Do not judge by appearance alone!

(...oh fåck I\'m tired...)

Well i finished the press conferance video

I dont mind the "spiderman" looking font. It looks neat and though it looked familiar, i didnt make the direct connection untill somebody said it.

Im still a little unsure about the games. "GT5" looks so strikingly similar to 4 with the exception of more cars and more people. Needless to say, i wasnt thrilled enough to jump for joy.

There were some washy colors/textures in the new insomniac (i think) game with the aliens vs all the troops. It seems that a lot of people are pushing the numbers a lot more than trying to show the poly count and textural capabilities (warhawk, GT, the insomniac game or w/e etc.)

The new unreal demo looked sexy but im still not sold that both that and the killzone etc demos are real time (playable). Even with the Fight Night 3 "real time" demo, it seemed that these playable games werent really that playable. The demo was obviously scripted (though i do think that the FN3 demo could be real time easily). The realtime demo that caught me was the EYE TOY one with the water and the cups/ etc. That was looking pretty sexy i must say.

The controller pictures of it in real life are making more bearable but the analog sticks should have a center indentation to make them more controllable. Once that grip wears out, theres nothing to keep your thumbs from falling off. I have no real problem with the placement, its just the stick design itself.

Controller design is an aesthetic nightmare and I\'m hoping that it at least feels right in your hands. Not really pleased with any of the designs for anything next gen.  Oh well, guess I\'m not buying them for how they look anyhow.  That\'s if I can afford to buy one.

I saw the specs listed a 2.5" detachable HDD. It didnt give a specific size in storage, so is the HDD going to be another add-on? If so, I fucking hate you sony.

There are no memory cards! You need to buy a HDD to save your progress!

The very first batch of Sony analogue pads had indented sticks. They hurted my finger and I had a boo-boo. Bad memories. They weren\'t padded in any way though, maybe technology to realize something as utopistic as "Padded, indented anal. sticks" is dawning upon us!

The List of features and future games for the PS3 has made it a done deal in my eyes already..

And this was before MGS4 was confirmed ...with Hideo at the HELM.

I found it funny how many people booed when they showed raiden in the MGS4 trailer. Also, after 2, Hideo said he was off MGS but hes not. Im glad but dont really know what to say about what he was thinking. Maybe somebody put him at gunpoint and told him that if he didnt make MGS games then they would Steal his movie collection or something (i dont know).

On the memory card business: It seems easy to use standard pc memory storage but personally im not a fan of these flimsy little sticks and such. I know they have cases but its just not the same. If they are going to make the damn thing backwards compatible then why put people though the hassle of buying some separate adapter?

Sony isn\'t known as an innovator when it comes to gaming. Unless Nintendo comes up with a new control feature, Sony is not likely to change their controller.

The original PSX controller was basically a SNES controller with extra shoulder buttons.

As soon as Nintendo came out with the ingenious analog stick that has become a necessity in 3d gaming Sony scrambled to release the Dualshock controller and added an EXTRA analog stick. Don\'t forget the N64\'s rumble pack.

If the controller for the revolution is indeed revolutionary then Sony is likely to implement it in their own controller and add an extra one.

User interaction is not something that Sony seems to devote a lot of R&D to.

Been forever since I have posted but here goes. ;)

Sony had to change there controller:

http://www.keepmedia.com/pubs/PlaystationMagazine/2004/12/01/614741?extID=10032&oliID=213

They lost the lawsite a month or two ago, can\'t remember when. That\'s why its really hard to find Ps2\'s in stock at stores in some parts of the US. Trying to find a Ps2 in the Northwest right now is like looking for a needle in a haystack. It\'s crazy.

So I\'m not shocked at all that the Ps3 has a "new" design.

You must have been living in a cave while Sony R&D have actively researched and developed a friendly camera called EyeToy that features user-interaction through motion. Not only that, but Sony have actively tried to enhance that experience by implementing colour recognition (as seen in SpyToy and in earlier demos when EyeToy was introduced; i.e., the Witch demo).

In fact, interaction of that level has been even shown using the EyeToy on PS3 at Sony\'s pre E3 press conference.

When I worked at Best Buy back in 2001 we used to setup certain computers with webcams that had games running. They had the same kind of stuff that is on the Eye toy. People would stand in front of the camera and make fools of themselves while trying to play the game on screen.

Hello? Sega had something close to that. You laid it on the floor and it translated your moves to the screen. I don\'t recall the name of it tho\'.

Nintendo had the camera, which would allow users to put themselves into the game, most notable was Perfect Dark, but it was pulled at last mintue, in fear of kids putting pictures of their teachers in the game or what not.

...don\'t you understand? We all know EyeToy is just a camera - the innovation lies within the software developed by Sony\'s R&D Studios. Even if such technology has been developed before, it never reached beyond a very small niche market - in fact, I\'ve never heard of it. Fact is, Sony got this into the market and brought this experience to many people that haven\'t seen this before. It\'s a great thing.

Besides, you have yet to prove which software did it earlier. I\'d be quite interested to see for myself how good it was and how advanced the application behind it was. Care to provide us with a link?

I had something similar but no way you can compare it with the eye toy.It came with the Web cams installation disc.
One of the programs it had was a sceen saver which showed a screen of what your camera sees a ball that flowed in the screen and a basket.
It detected movement and for example if you moved your hand towards the ball the ball moved and started bouncing on the screen\'s "walls".You were supposed to make it enter the basket.

So basically what you are saying is that if I invent something interesting it doesn\'t count as innovative until someone else makes the EXACT same thing and sells it to more people? That doesn\'t make any sense.

I mean, if you consider "stores all around the world" a niche market then I don\'t know what to tell you. The fact of the matter is that webcams have pretty much the same architecture and come with the same software functionality as the Eyetoy.

You are trying to use backwards ass logic to convince yourself that the Eyetoy was this great invention when it is not.

That\'s not what I said at all. I was saying that EyeToy brought something innovative and fun to millions of users that didn\'t know something like that was possible or even existed.

It was this quote by you (specifically the bolded one) that I directly disagree with:

Quote
Sony isn\'t known as an innovator when it comes to gaming. Unless Nintendo comes up with a new control feature, Sony is not likely to change their controller.

What I am saying is that Sony has been experimenting with a new control feature through EyeToy. There\'s also a patent filed from Sony over new controller-devices.

And btw; EyeToy was introduced in 2002 if memory serves me correct.

Quote
User interaction is not something that Sony seems to devote a lot of R&D to.

Another one of your quotes btw that is nullfied by the fact that Sony R&D have actively participated in the development of user-interaction through camera, as with new controller-type interfaces (there are patents filed on this).

You\'re arguments I\'ve disagreed with have already been countered.

If you want this discussion to advance beyond the point I argued, you better define "innovator" first.
