I\'ve played Soul Calaber 2 in 720p on my LCD HDTV and it was hot but seeing X360 games with full Anti-Aliasing is
ATI revealed this afternoon that every single Xbox 360 game will be required to run at a minimum of 720p resolution with 4x Anti-Aliasing.
Speaking at a press conference in London, ATI technology specialist Rene Froeleke told journalists that Microsoft had specified that games must run at the 1280x720 resolution at 4xAA with no slowdown. Every single game will be supported at this graphical specification, which we think is great news for gamers playing on big-screen TVs.
When questionned as to why the minimum wasn\'t 1080p, Rene responded that most of Europe hadn\'t even reached 720, let alone 1080.
Because of the embedded DRAM architecture of Xbox 360, the AA was described as \'Absolutely free\'.
The technology fulfills all the criteria of Windows Graphics Foundation 1.0, aka DirectX 9.0c, which includes Shader Model 3.0. However, it lacks features which are required for WGF 2.0, most notably the ability to create vertices, rather than just shade and manipulate them.
Whilst the architecture of the 360 is not comparable to a PC design, Rene said that the raw performance would be roughly equivalent to a 32-pipeline PC graphics card.
The shared memory technology was \'Definitely not comparable to Hypermemory\', ATI\'s shared memory technology for the PC.
The chip doesn\'t have an official ATI name, since ATI aren\'t marketing it. Whilst the codename is R500, we were told that the name meant \'As much as the code on my suitcase\' in terms of relevance to existing architecture.

big whoop
how little of the population actually has a HD TV?
gimmick
-
damned if they do, damned if they don\'t.
-
Isn\'t this going to be yet another Next Gen Standard (X360...PS3....Revolution)... like the wireless controllers ?
-
The transition to HD is a natural one, NTSC is a joke in the 21st century. And yes it\'s old news but reassuring to know. :)
-
aye.. HDTV are getting very cheap.. loads of ppl will be HDTV enabled within the next 5 year.. go thing to give the extra for those who are already there :)
-
HDTV\'s are geting cheaper, but their still fuggin expensive.
-
So.... No more PAL / NTSC ?
or will they still have region lockouts out of badness ?
-
Can\'t wait for HDTV to properly arrive to Europe.
I think the next WC in Football is supposed to be broadcasted in HDTV, I hope that will speed things up.

You call this a gimmick, but will defend something like the Eyetoy or PSP playing UMD\'s (why does a gaming console need it\'s own movie format?!?!?).
This is great news for those with HD TV\'s, which is slowly increasing every day.
-
please point out where i defended eyetoy or umd\'s, lol
i am VERY anti-proprietary media, you must have not been around for my N64/gdrom days
key word, slowly

I hardly see it as a gimmick.
Consoles always lacked in comparison to PC resolutions. This is a good step since people that want full high definition quality in their games can have that kind of quality.
Some people are annoyied by the resolution they get from their consoles.
It was about time if you ask me.HDTVs will become the new standard in the long run.Consoles should start having that quality as standard
-
so....where i defended eyetoy or umd\'s
-
I\'m planning on buying an HDTV this Christmas just so i can take advantage of the HD capable consoles. it may be a gimmick but one that will entice more people into buying HDTV\'s
More HDTV\'s sold, the bigger the need for Sony\'s Blu-ray technology. it\'s smart business
-
well, certainly
but people are drooling over shit that\'s already been around

Is that a reply to my post?
-
did you accuse me of defending the eyetoy or UMD\'s?
-
No but it came right after my post :p

most hdtvs are either 720p or 1080i. But 1080p is starting to spread. My guess would be by next year, 1080p hdtv display will be more commons.
Since last summer, most new hdtvs have HDMi input. Most only have one, I guess by next year, they can include two hdmi inputs connection.

1080p hdtv display will be more commons
which is seems, xbox doesnt support.
i haven\'t memorized the specs, im sure pstwo can correct me if i\'m wrong
so why pimp HD abilties, when it\'s not even future proof?
-
Well, HDTV has become pretty succesfull in the US becuz NTSC image quality is just really crappy.
PAL is the reason why many Europeans didn\'t see the need yet for buying an expensive HDTV, becuz PAL iq is very good by itself.
So, that nullifies any console HDTV argument in Europe.

When it becomes a standard and price is lowered it wont matter asmuch if its future proof or not

I\'m sure as hell my HDTV isn\'t a gimmick. This will be very good for me.

There\'s nothing gimmicky about HDTV.
