Title: The current state of Horror movies...
Post by: Jumpman on June 06, 2005, 11:41:45 AM
What happened! I never realized that I\'ve  never been truly frightened by a movie made in the last 20 years or so. I saw Night Of The Living Dead recently in black and white and it was infinitely scarier than these god awful recent attempts at "horror"(House Of Wax, Scream, the one with Sarah Michelle Gellar, *insert any horror movie made in god knows how long here*).

28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn Of The Dead were ok but honestly, what happened to the genre?

Damn right.Back then the director because he didnt have the technology, special effects crap etc tried to create the horror feel through psychological "tricks", music and atmosphere.
Now its all BS

There\'s a new horror movie every month now, and they all blow.

tru no doubt...all of the recent horror joints are just terrible. i mean they don\'t even show the killings anymore! when somebody gets killed they show a cutscene of blood being splashed on the wall....and all horror flicks today are pure action horror. the scenes that are supposed to be frightning are filled with heavy metal music or some type of lame ass techno...

back in the day horror joints showed the killings...even if they were made up clay props, back then they went the extra mile to create those special effects that look waaaay better than this computer generated crap we get now....don\'t even get me started on these "matrix" effect fight scenes in horror joints either..pathetic..

Well I don\'t know if it was because of what was going on in Gainesville at the time, but Exorcist III was pretty damn creepy.

Netflix has put me on to a couple of those Japanese horror flicks. If you can get past the subtitles they have some of the creepiest shit made in the past 10 years.

Movies back then couldn\'t rely on gore tactics and special effects, etc. Honestly, older movies don\'t do much for me. Exorcist is always a good scare tho. Can\'t go wrong with the crazy girl running down the stares, crab-style.

it seems like all "horror" movies today scare u by having loud sounds pop up at silent times.

Rarely any mental scary movies come out anymore

Japanese horror films are the latest rage, but honestly, I think they are subpar at best. Yes, they are better than what we American\'s are use to see\'ing, but still, they aren\'t that great. The best thing about them is the directors don\'t have to explain everything. The horror aspect lies within the vagueness. Where as American films try to explain every detail and beat the audience in the head with it.

i\'ll agree that 28 days later had it\'s moments... one of the better "horror" movies to come out recently.  Other than that it\'s been pretty bad.

I saw a trailer for "Land of the Dead" on tv the other night, dunno how good it\'ll be though

Only movie that even slightly put some fear into me was darkness falls...  Mainly because i researched the history of the tooth fairy to find she was a aussie living in port fairy.   :/

how was dawn of the dead? *new version*....i came in on the middle of it and didn\'t bother to watch it...but y\'know how cable shows the name of the movie, and then rates it by how many stars it has by it? well it was rated 3 stars...is it that good?  anything 3 stars and up i tend to think it\'s halfway decent...

I don\'t use the star ratings to watch movies. I\'ve seen movies that had 1 star that I thought were awesome. Ratings nowadays are totally f*cked up.

the last movie I thought worked pretty well was excorcist the beginning, while not a great movie it\'s the only movie in a long time that managed to create a bleak somewhat scary atmosphere even though almost nothing happened the entire movie.

I accually thought Amityville horror was pretty scary. Scariest thing about it is that it\'s based on a true story and the house accually exists.

Yeah...um...that movie wasn\'t scary at all. Possibly one of the least scariest films of all time. The fact that it even put "slight"
fear in someone is just sad.

Soully: -5

welp, as i said.  What made it scary was the facts behind it...  not the movie itself.  Amityville horror movies scary,  pleeeeaaseee.

Night of the Living Dead, all they had was flood lighting and an organ for background music. Then the tension of being surrounded by flesh eating zombies, not getting along with your only surviving humans, the thought of starving to death and not getting out....yep. Scared me when I was 13. Scares me today. Back then, I had to sleep with the radio on so I\'d know if there were zombies about.

so true gman..and that is what i\'m talkin\' about. music goes a loong way in creating that effect, you don\'t get that anymore. the recent horror movies, at least those involving zombies, i\'ve heard nothing but heavy metal music or some type of techno playing, when the music is supposed to be suspenseful or frightening....

Dumbass.
The Lutz have confirmed there story was a hoax to get out of a house payment they couldn\'t afford. However, the murders did happen, but not because of demons.

That\'s right. I was more scared when playing Capcom\'s Resident Evil than I was watching the movie with the 5th Element chick. That movie blew.

I forgot about M Night Shamalan(sp lol). Sith Sense and Signs were just creepy. SS was his first attempt and it wasn\'t even horror, just a very clever and unique movie with these sudden scenes of terror that could hit anyone by surprise. You may not of found the movie scary, but regardless it was still a great movie.

Signs on the other hand was classic suspense. Props to him on that movie, nothing like seeing that alien standing on the roof for the first time. Again not a horror movie rather than a movie about "finding yourself" just well thought out seens of suspense.

I\'ll just comment on signs...that movie imo was waay too slow,..it dragged on and on...i almost fell asleep on it. and to think that...........spoiler........water was the aliens weakness?..didn\'t they realize that when comin to a planet that\'s what? 85% surrounded by water? :p

maybe i\'m lookin too deep in that aspect, but just takin it for what it was, and i realize what they were tryin to do as far as the suspense is concrened(unseen creatures, slick camera work), but it just didn\'t hold any weight with me...

everyone needs to go rent "audition" by Takashi Miike right now

great, great film

a little disturbing at times, but one of the creepiest films i\'ve ever seen.

then again, pick up a few more Miike films like Gozu, Visitor Q, ect

the end scene of Gozu is about the wierdest you will ever see

It was a subpar film by Rob Zombie. It may as well been an R-rated music video. He claims to have a soft spot for the good horrors and it\'s homage to them, well, it sucked.

Ya that sort of ruined it right there....and they couldnt open doors, and were weak as hell....

Any movie that has a scene where a cop is on his knees with a gun to the back of his head, then has the camera zoom out slowly for 5-10 minutes, than has him get shot, and does not end the movie there, is bad.

Also, the rest of the movie was horrible.

One word:      Saw.

I saw it last night and it was pretty good.It\'s one of those horror movies that actually make you think while watching it.

It wasn\'t as gory as I thought it would be but that\'s a good thing.

It was a mix between Silence Of The Lambs and Seven(ofcourse not as good as either of them).

Anyway,go check it out if you have a chance.
