BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhuanet)-- A suspected Ku Klux Klansman accused of the leading figure of the 1964 murders of three civil rights workers went on trial in a Mississippi court on Monday.
Edgar Ray Killen, an 80-year-old ordained Baptist minister, was escorted into the start of his state murder trial by the current Imperial Wizard of the notorious white supremacist group.
He is the only person ever indicted on state murder charges over the deaths in June 1964 of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, dramatized in the movie "Mississippi Burning."
Killen\'s lawyers had sought to distance the man known as "the Preacher" from involvement in the Klan.
"I think the Klan\'s presence sort of dispels some of the myth that Killen says he is not associated with the group," Ben Chaney said.
Killen\'s trial is expected to last about three weeks.
