I know there was a thread like this in the console debating but it was closed...
well, Sony know what they do, maybe a PS3 with a built-in HD would be too expansive, and sure they put all the resources in what is the heart of the console, to make an ultra powerful piece of hardware with superior graphics and physics capabilities...or maybe a PS3 conceived with a built-in HD would have been less powerful.....you can\'t have a cake and eat it :D
what do you think?
-
I definately believe it was to cut costs, as Sony is gonna lose a ton of cash on each ps3 sold. Plus this now forces everyone to buy a memory stick of some sort. I\'m hoping that game saves can be saved to any of the multitude of card formats available as I have a nice 512 MB SD card that I could use.
-
I think it will have the option to allow a SONY ONLY external HD. Sony makes tons and tons of cash off its console peripherals. Then Madkatz will reverse engineer it and sell their own version....and later, some other company will make an adaptor for the PS3 to read from any external HD and probably PC\'s HD as well.
It\'s not a step backwards coz Xbox\'s built in HD wasn\'t a huge leap forward either since not that many games utilized its full potential.
BTW...JBean cut me off the I-695 last week. Ban him.
-
personally, i dont want a HD in my console
so, good news
-
well the only reason i bought a ps2 hd was just so i can see the video highlights in espn football..:(..lame i know, but worth it...doesn\'t matter either way for me tho....i\'ll still get one..
-
I can\'t stand memory cards.
-
all the resources to get the best CPU/GPU with incredible graphycs and physics capabilities, I\'m happy with this, and if I have to be honest, not many XBox games took full advantage of the built-in HD, and most of all, most PS2 users never regreted so much a built-in HD...
-
Stop trying to justify it so bad. It\'s not a HUGE loss but if they included a tiny HD with the PS3 I wouldn\'t have to worry about buying another $25 memory card when my saves fill up.
-
I enjoyed loading games and all my songs on my hdd for xbox.
And all the downloadable content for xbox live makes having a hdd a must.
I guess ps3 online will suck as much as ps2 online.
-
console online gaming sucks anyways
no loss there

If I remember well there was something said that you dont need a HD to save things.

If they can make it not suck this time, I\'ll be fine with it. Ratchet & Clank online was pretty fun. I don\'t like online console gaming that much either.

I don\'t think that\'s possible.

I like Tetris Live. But whenever the power blinks my game adapter resets and I never remember how to reconfigure it without sitting on hold with the tech people forever. So I haven\'t been able to use it for months.
Still getting billed though, I\'m sure.

There is noway you will be able to save all the downloadable content without a hdd. Like NG had the hurricane packs. Without an hdd where would you save it at?
memory card = 2small

512mb internal card is too small for savegames? dirt cheap too
piss on "downloadable content", it\'s a gimmick

true it\'s a gimmick but it\'s the new hotness.

I would like to see A HDD available some time soon after or on launch, but, I dont see much use for it, at least not yet.
Consoles still lag far behind PCs when it comes to having downloadable content ready available on the web. If PS3 did include A HDD I doubt you would find any 3rd party sites to download extra cars/tracks. Polyphony Digital may release a few tracks to download and a few cars but I dont think it will be anything like the PC world which has thousands of 3rd party guys making tracks planes cars etc.
So what would you need a HDD for? MMORPGS? I think thats about it.
Now that I think about it, there really is no need for a HDD for consoles except for internet use, and if you have a PC then why use your console? If I could save my game files from my PC games to a floppy disk I wouldnt need a HDD even for PC games. HDD is overrated and rarely used/needed. I\'m sure if XBOX didnt have it nobody would care that PS3 doesnt have it.

This will change in time.
I was pleasantly surprised to read the 360 will come with an HD. I don\'t have to purchase a memory card, and if I ever choose to participate in the market place or take advantage of downloadable content then I\'ll be ready without having to buy something extra. I\'ll defintely be taking advantage of the Xbox Live free weekends.
Nintendo and the Revolution; I believe I read that we\'ll be able to download every game made for a Nintendo console going all the way back to the NES. I don\'t know about you but I could name about 30 games that I will be interested in downloading, and that\'s just off the top of my head. I doubt a 512 MB memory card will suffice. I\'ll be a happy gamer if the Revolution comes with a HD, and if it doesn\'t then I won\'t be so happy but I\'ll buy one anyway.
I don\'t see any reason why Sony should include an HD. What they\'ve revealed thus far doesn\'t warrant the addition or purchase of a HD.

Since ps3 won\'t have an hdd. I guess you will have to use a ps1,ps2, and ps3 memory cards. Instead of using the hdd to save all games on the drive.
-
like we dont have them already

I dont see why people hate memory cards so much. They arent that hard to keep track of really. That and for those that arent antisocialists that just sit at home by theirselves playing online the whole time, you can take your saved data to a friends house. Sounds queer but if i remember correctly, it was all those xbox fanboys that were poking and prodding at the ps2 for only having 2 controller ports.
-
I hate deleting data from mem cards when I need to make a new save. It was a real PITA when I was wanting to save several key spots in RE4. I was limited to 3 saves. Felt like I was playing Zelda for the NES all over again.

It\'s simply more convenient to have it all in one place. I HATED keeping track of all my VMU\'s for my DC. My PS and PS2 memory cards are full, and instead of buying another one I\'ve been giving my Gamecube and Xbox more attention. No sense in paying $20-30 on a memory card when I can buy a game or two with that money.
Oh, and as far as taking the saved data elsewhere, the 360 HD is removeable.
HD = teh win, imo.

VMU wasnt just a memory card
it had great potential, but pooly engineed and implimented

Who the hell wants to carry a damn HD around? Not to mention you cant have 2 running at the same time thus not being able to load your data and whoever else\'s data at the same time. Consider having both and only taking off the data you need off the HD. Much better than taking off your HD.
Anyway, HD\'s are nice and all but im all fine and good with my memory cards.

Agreed. I loved the idea behind the VMU

The 360 HD is not very big. It\'s no more a hassle than taking a game and/or memory card to a friend\'s house.

only like 10x the size and weight
