Hi all,
First off, let me say that I read the thread on fixing disc read errors. I\'m not sure that my problem entirely fits into that category.
After having obtained a new game (retail - Destroy all Humans), I began to play. About a short while into the game, I died and needed to reload. This is when the problems began. A noise appeared in the drive bay (kind of like a high pitched fast chirp). The game never got pass the load screen. I waited a long while and nothing. I reset the machine and the same noise is still there. This time, the dvd will not load at all. The initial welcome screen went into the browser screen. I checked the browser. The machine can detect my two memory cards just fine, but keeps saying that it\'s trying to load from the dvd drive. At this point, I tried turning the machine off (not standby) then on again. . . no help. I tried other games (both retail and backup dvds). . . still nothing. Sometimes, the machine tells me that there is a read error, other times, it just keeps trying to read, forever (don\'t know why it\'s not always disc read error).
I then cleaned the laser lens. This didn\'t help either.
I did some research. The laser has been know to break in PS2s. Does this sound like a laser issue? How can I find out if the laser is broken? Can anything else be causing this problem (i.e. drive motor problem. . .)?
I\'ve had my ps2 for about 2 years now. It\'s a version 9, modded with a Magic V chip. I\'ve never had any problems with it until this occured. I don\'t think it\'s the mod chip\'s fault. Neither my retail dvds nor my backup dvds work.
Can anyone please offer some suggestions? Anything at all.
Thanks.

Funny you should mention your ps2 stopping playing, mine is starting to give me grief as well. I\'ve had it about 4 years now and it\'s not caused me the slightest problem before the last month or so
From reading what you say, your problem sounds very similar to mine. I notice it most when I\'m playing GTA SA, it takes a long time to load the short distance textures now, whereas before it loaded them instantly. Now when I drive into a new block on the map, the 3d mapping takes a ehile to com eup, and I find myself driving along a road with no markings or buildings. Also, when I\'m flying, large parts of the ground remain invisible, then they pop up intermittently.
I think I\'m getting the same noises as well from the disk drive when it\'s being read, it\'s a cross between a grinding sound and a rattling sound, almost like the disk isn\'t sitting properly in the space.

you broke you modded PS2
sad face
:(
-
my ps2 isn\'t modded
-
Thank you for that insightful reply MM.
Got anything else USEFUL?
I just want to know if my porbel sounds like a laser issue.
-
yeah, piracy is lame and i hope your broken PS2 burns your house down
-
I agree. :thumb:
-
In what way is my problem related to piracy? You know nothing of me or what I do. Point of fact, EVERY game that I liked, I bought (that comes to a lot of games). A modded ps2 is in no way illegal, and I\'m not using it towards any illegal end. If you have nothing constructive to offer on my problem, then by all means don\'t say anything at all. If you feel the uncontrollable need to cram your unsolicited opinions down people\'s throats, then start a new thread.
My problem isn\'t isolated to modded ps2s, so if my broken ps2 is going to burns my house down, then sooner or later, yours is going to burn your house down too.
In any case, I will no longer dignify one of your responses with one of mine.
I invite any helpful suggestions.

Just found out from videogamerepair.com that it is a laser issue.
Thanks all (that includes you mm)!
If anyone has a similar problem. . . time to get a new part.
Later. . .

as usual, you missed the point totally....
-
Yeah for missing the point!

I modded my old school PSX so I could play Tobal No.2 and a few other games from Japan. Back in the days of PSX, a guy from Sweden had to get his PSX modded coz Europe was getting shafted by Sony.
Australians can\'t play the US version of GTA3 so some of them mod thier PS2 for such games.
Modded console does not always = piracy.
You girls need to quit making assumptions.

He had "backup dvd\'s"

You know I don\'t. That\'s not why my PSX is modded. My PS2 is not modded coz I\'m not the hardcore gamer I once was.

Oh dear.Look at the topic and look at your post.you poor thing.
-
okay, let\'s try again...
mm\'s point was that eventhough modding isn\'t per definiton illegal it is pretty clear this guy is using it illegally...
you\'re half assed reply to this is: modding isn\'t per definition illegal, proving that you missed the freaking point...
now go away you silly man :(

modding is not necessarilly illegal you poor thing.Thats also what GmanJoe said.Unless you buy pirated games.
Modded PS2\'s play original non-pirated games of every region as well. And some use it for personal use only like having back ups in case their original disk is damaged.
Its not clear how he is using it.
-
Unless you buy pirated games
what moron would "buy" pirated games?

goddamned, you\'re even more stupid than I thought :(
please point out where I said modding is illegal...
I freaking know it doesn\'t have to be, you are missing the point (heh :o)
the point is that almost all modded ps2\'s are modded for illegal usage, so this assmaster was probably (!!) doing it too...
now please fuck off and let me lurk these forums again....;)

Ever been to Asia where they sell these pirated games for no more than $1? Haven\'t? The labels look NEARLY identical to the originals.
When I went in 1998, I literally could not find one shop that had original games. All the vendors had pirated copies.
-
i rest my case

Are you assuming I bought those games? You\'re an ass and umption.

mm refered to piracy.Thats P-I-R-A-C-Y.So I refered to piracy as well. So with other words you are the one who totally missed the point.
PS2\'s being modded for illegal use generally had nothing to do with it.
And since modding doesnt necessarily mean P-I-R-A-C-Y....;) well now I hope,no wait I ment....HOPE
(thats big bold capital letters in case you dont understand how much worried I am about you) that you ll never embarrass yourself again trying to show off and lick some ass

again, noone mods thier console to merely play import games.
enough with the semantics
