Title: Unsecured wide open WiFi = jail time for moochers?

Umm...I just don\'t agree with this. Anyway...we have a condo in a beachside community where several people have unsecured networks. They don\'t seem to care people piggy back. I get on their system just to order pizza. (I ain\'t there that often)

Wow pretty crazy story at the beginning.  I have the encryption turned on on my Linksys luckily, but not by Mac adress.

Such a shame these deadbeats ruin it for everyone.  It would be nice to share a wireless network wherever you are, especially when traveling.

If he hadn\'t been so freakin\' secretive....anyway, clearly there was intent on his part to get free internet.

However, if my network drops at my condo and picks up my neighbor\'s unsecured network...I shouldn\'t be fined or arrested.

Breeden recalled a case a few years ago in which e-mail containing death threats was sent to a school principal in Tallahassee. The e-mail was traced back to a home, and when investigators arrived, they found a dumbfounded family. The culprit: a neighborhood boy who had set up the family\'s Wi-Fi network and then tapped into it.

In another Florida case, a man in an apartment complex used a neighbor\'s Wi-Fi to access bank information and pay for pornography sites.

But he slipped up. The man had sex products sent to his address. "The morning we did a search warrant, we found an antenna hanging out his window so he could get a better signal from his neighbor\'s network," Breeden said.

interesting story there...

too much technical mumbo jumbo..wtf is a Wi-Fi?...sheeit reading that statement makes it seem like that man was using the neighbor\'s "wifey" to access bank information...:p

I have a wireless router and share a network with my neighbor.  I know other people use the connection too but I don\'t mind really.  I guess I could lock the network to MAC addresses... maybe i\'ll do that when I notice my internet speeds dropping.

Coming back from college my mother dropped our cable so I\'ve had to resort to unsecured networks.  Hmmm, maybe not such a hot idea, but I only run aim and surf the web on it.

The way I figure it, if you don\'t want people on it, password protect it.  As for the moochers, have respect and don\'t do anything crazy and I don\'t see the harm.

I think they should just put wireless transmitters on all telephone polls allowing everyone a wireless connection and simply charge a monthly fee like a cell phone

I dunno if that guy will get convicted. The guy wasn\'t trespassing. The network was broadcasting and he was on a public road using their signal which he did not hack into. It was wide open.

This isn\'t the same as an unlocked door. Apples and oranges. Baby monitors have picked up cordless phone converstations before and those listening weren\'t arrested or fined. I think the FCC even has statements like that on their products.

Anyway...be sure to visit me in jail. You can be my jail bitch.

he was wardriving....

not like he was in his apartment and just stumbled upon his neighor\'s SSID by accident

again, he was driving around, MALICIOUSLY looking for unsecured networks

The thing is, it\'s broadcasting. It\'s unsecured. He didn\'t hack. He had intent to find free internet. He got it.

He can get it from a coffee shop. Would he go to jail? The laws on this is still unclear. It\'s still open for interpretation. I bet you he\'ll walk.

coffee shop\'s are intentionally open, and most of the newer (smarter) ones are using tokens so people cant leech free internet without actually buying anything

this moron was purposely sniffing people\'s SSID\'s from out in the street looking for data, therefore illegal.  a soon to be form of burglary

who\'s to say he wasn\'t looking for CC numbers, or other personal information.  what if he was running snort or etherpeek?

If you want a WiFi connection, be smart enough to secure it. Otherwise, expect someone to abuse it eventually. Common sense. It is like leaving your keys in the car, with the door open, in the middle of the city... Eventually, someone will take it.

Common sense will go a long way. Not saying he shouldn\'t be convicted, just saying that people are idiots.
:p

So this means I probably shouldn\'t be using the neighbors connection....

shit, you can sit your car right in front of my house and use my unsecure connection to download all the porn you want. And if mine is down for some reason, use the neigbors! :)

And here\'s where it can get complicated. What if the guy "wardriving" picked up someone elses signal and not someone else who\'s not so tolerant of them.

I\'m curious to see how the court hearing goes on this.
