Went to my college orientation today at san diego state. Out of the HUGE ASS book they gave us of majors, nothing stood out.
Im really interested in astronomy so i signed up for it, but what career could i get with that? teaching or being a museum person...dont really see me doing that. or NASA which is like..the crazy smart people.
Nothing like engineering or phsycology interests me..biology kind of does, maybe zoology. or the military like my dad did since he couldnt find anything in college.
I like too much random stuff..i pay attention to sports (mainly baseball and football) really closely so i dunno if i should look into that...or where to begin.
Just venting..damn thinking of the future..
any other college people (titan..) go to their college orientation?

Don\'t sweat it, typically whatever you decide on, you\'ll change three different times.
;)

After seeing Final Fantasy VII tech demo on ps3, it makes me wanted to do something like but I am afraid its too hard for me...so far now, I am not sure what to do if I ever go to college.
-
do not make the mistake of picking an obscure major cause it seems interesting
pick something that will be in demand 4-5 years from now
it\'s a ton of money and a lot of time to be wasted
-
I\'ll be starting my advanced electronics engineering diploma next year, my orientation will be coming up soon... will probably be lame crap though.
-
Most people really have no idea going in. Just take a bunch of different classes in a bunch of different areas as a freshman, and see if anything grabs you.
-
Lib Arts.
Do something that\'ll get you jobs in any part of Europe or North America. International Business or hell....be a nurse-man. They can make tons of money.

In the US, as far as I know. They are in such demand now, they make their own schedules, as long as it\'s 40 hours a week minimum. Men or women nurses.

Basically.
One tactic that I have seen used is to major in whatever(no matter how obscure) and just coast through college with high marks. After that, specialize in something useful in grad school.

They have stuff like that in Aussie? What do they pay someone like that? Twenty woodchips a week?

A sports therapist is what they\'re called, I believe.

Sports Therapists (sports medicine) > Physical Therapists

I\'m going to major in bioscience for premed. People tell me to minimize the time spent on searching. Generally, those who discover their majors late tend to do poorer than those who stick to their plans from freshman year.

I ended up going to mine like a week after I got out of school (not even). I really don\'t know exactly what I\'m going to do. I may do \'law and justice\' (criminal justice equivelent) or something with TV/movie production since that interests me. If I go that route, I want a job in movies but if I do law and justice, I want to become a cop.

Stupid question...how the hell do you make the extra symbols like the Copyright thing on a Windows keyboard?
-
copy and paste from character map
or the long way alt + 0169 = ©
-
I think I\'ll just copy and paste from a character map. You can do it right from the keyboard on an Apple PC. No copying and pasting crappola.
Thanks.

wow that alt thang is pretty cool. learn something new everyday

im going with zoologist for now. I like animals and out of all the subjects, biology interests me...its majoring in bology but emphasizing zoology. And of course i can always change it. Just doing my GE..test the college water.
not exactly sure what will be demanding in 4-5 years. Supposedly engineering is the best thing to get into right now. First year after college and my brother got a decent paying job (computer engineering).
-
I went through orientation for aerospace engineering and I produce fishing shows and automotive shows.

What kind of college courses (major) do I need to work in the movie/television industry?

Although it\'s hard to believe I\'m going to college too!
My orientation is on Monday thru Tuesday.
So, I\'ll update then.

Don\'t try and make us sound stupid when you got the crococdile hunter over there pissing off the most dangerous animals he can find then touching them and poking them with sticks.

 :lmao:

You guys are just a bunch of bullies. :(

and the croc hunter has made millions from gullible americans. Now thats funny. :D

He dangled his baby in front of a hungry crocodile. You don\'t dangle infants in front of ravenous animals. I hope he gets hit by a car.
-
yea, he was a bit of a moron for doing that, but the cash flow still comes in.
-
but the cash flow still comes in.
Yes, unfortunately. I hope a croc bites off his legs. But he\'d probably manage to get back to being a dumb ass again somehow.
-
well, i personally hope he doesn\'t. Hes doing a lot for aussie wild life hell, wild life in general. The guy is a dickhead, but he\'s doing something productive with his cash.

Americans just dangle their babies out of balcony windows.
Croc hunter > Michael Jackson
In college I learned to write. Now I write. And work in a warehouse.

Anyone who evokes the "Crocodile Hunter" in an argument, to strengthen their stance, automatically concedes said argument.
So it was written. So shall it be done.

Damnit. Why did Titan have to post? Now it seems to be easier and more fashionable to make fun of him, for using that old-ass joke.

Well, I just went to my college orientation at SMU. It was awsome of course, great food(private school food) great teachers and great "daddy\'s girl" blondes just waiting to be exploited!
I signed up for my classes too. I\'m going with a double major in ME and Math and a minor in Spanish and PS. But who knows, I had to choose kinda because the ME program is so long. It helped that I\'m going in with at least 25 credit hours already. So far, I\'m loving it. My earlist class is at 9:30 and every day I\'ll be thru by 2pm! Except on mondays when I\'ll have lab for Intro to ME.
The food is really awsome though. It\'s cooked fresh everyday, fruit, eggs, sausage whatever you want for breakfast. And you actually get to order lunch, like in a restaurant. The dorms I\'m staying in are cool, better than most I suppose.
The only draw back I have about SMU is it\'s lack of spirit. Ever since the school got busted for paying their student athletes and therefore neutering their football program for along time, I want to be part of it all! They just switched divisions so we\'ll be playing schools that are actually known across the country.
Due to the lack of minorities at SMU(I was only one of the five hispanics present at the 150 people orienation) we get to have our own "minority orientation" later on. It wasn\'t bad, the girls seemed really interested in my Spanish actually. They really loved the latin flavvvvooorrrrr. I don\'t blame them.
Also, they are building this sweet new engineering building and this sports recreation building!
Just to show the financial power house that this school is:
http://www.smu.edu/construction/
Seriously, we got our own cops, buses to take us all over the city, park, I think a lake, museums and it just keeps going.
On an interesting note, Dr. Phil\'s son is going to be in my "Contemporary Moral Problems" class next year. Hmm, that should be interesting!
GO MUSTANGS!

Haha cmon man all those things you listed are standard for any college, stop trying to build yourself up so much.
[/azzhole mode]
But anyway it sounds like a decent place, even though it is a private school ;)
I went to their site trying to find out wtf SMU stands for and it\'s for:
SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY
huuuuuuhhhhh? Weren\'t you the guy who broke up with his gf because she was too religious, then you go to a Christian school!? Explain ahora!

Well, maybe from wherever your from all universities are like that!!
Well, I didn\'t go to any other private school, and I only glanced at Notre Dame, so I guess I was comparing it to Texas Tech or A&M which are trash pits compared to SMU.
It lost its affiliation a LOOONNGGG time ago. That is my explaination! Short and sweet!

Why didn\'t you consider UT? Looks like you\'re leaning towards being an engineer (since you\'re majoring in ME and math), and UT Austin has one of the best engineering programs in the nation. AND it\'s public, meaning you can lavish more money on the opposite sex.
-
Mystiq, my school is constantly updated and adding on new departments and whatnot and its a state school. Its not that big of a deal that your school is adding on because all the colleges around me are constantly updating.

I did consider UT. But I visited the campus and it was way too large and I\'m an attention hog. I went to many programs with UT and SMU, but UTs classes were really huge, I mean immense and it just didn\'t fit what I was looking for.
Small and private! And Titan I know that! But still, my school is better than yours. That is just the way it is.

Besides the obvious Movie and Production courses, I would seriously recommend a business minor with a lot of accounting.
Everything is about the bottom line. Extremely important.

I dont feel like starting a new thread just to ask a question.
But do people look at cumulative GPA while hiring? or HOW you passed college? or just if u have a bachelor\'s?
Because theres a chance i could fail chemistry. After i bombed a lab test i kinda threw in the towel about going into it (if i couldnt pass the first class..what about the next 2 and then biology after that). Granted i did that prematurely, got pissed off with it, didnt really study, and im probably going to bomb a test tomorrow. I studied a bit but i got sick so im not studying as hard as i usually can. plus its tomorrow and i know im kinda screwed.
ANYWAY, im going to switch majors but now i might have the F in chemistry that im not going back to fix. Eventually ill get a bachelors in business er something, but will jobs look back and see i got an F that lowered my cummulative GPA? or will they just look that i got the bachelors?
I\'m 0-2 with random majors..first one doesnt really count cuz i changed it before school started. So im probably going to go into something relatively predictable like business even though im not "interested" in it. Sales is pretty big and my cousin does business with wine and is doing really well. I figure, if ur interested in something, go and try majoring in it to see if u can get a career in something u like. If ur not interested in anything specific, go into something obvious like business, heh.
-
Wow..An F in chemistry. You will SO NEVER WORK in any good place...They just don\'t hurt people who have F\'S in chemistry!
-
get familiar with "welcome to mcdonald\'s"
-
Why don\'t you withdrawl from the course? It won\'t hurt your GPA if you do.
-
As long as you have a bachelor\'s you can get a decent job. If you\'re pursuing a master\'s or want to make the top 10-20% in your field, a good GPA is almost always needed.
Business is a decent degree that can be used in any type of professional field. Though econs & accounting kicked my azz, I learned a ton of seemingly logical facts about the business world that I wouldn\'t have learned otherwise.
Communications is the universal BS degree; fairly easy to get, but can land you a good job.
-

i was more concerned about a lower cummulative gpa than them seeing an F in chemistry. But i started majoring in biology, which is why failing chemistry is a bigger deal than if it was just some class i had to get out of the way. Not that i ever get my grades in time..i got my quiz grade i took like 2 months ago yesterday so i kinda have to wait till the way end to see what i will end up with.
cant drop it though. Think 4 weeks into the semester was the deadline to do that. Have finals in a couple weeks so im almost done with it.
But whatever..mightve done decent on the test today and i still got the final to give me some more points and manage a C. Still going to switch whether i pass it or not.
thanks for the advice THX. Ill have all christmas break to look over majors so ill check what ways i could go with communication

That\'s kinda what I\'m doing. I\'m majoring in Communications with a concentration in radio/tv/film is what I believe they call it. Either way, I get a BA in Communications....I think. Maybe I should research this before I declare :)

nursing is actually one of the most impacted courses at san diego state.
