Title: Looking at buying a laptop...
Post by: Ghettomath on July 25, 2005, 06:39:58 AM
Here are the ones I\'ve got it narrowed down to. Now remember, I\'m a poor college student so I\'m not looking for anything too expensive.

Apple iBook-$899
1.2GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @1.2GHz
12-inch TFT Displays
1024x768 resolution
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
30GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory
AirPort Extreme built-in

Dell-

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/latit_d510?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~page=4&~tab=specstab#tabtop

Gateway-

IBM- (The economy one)

Has anyone been through the notebook-buying process before? Have any advice? Recommendations?

I\'m leaning toward the iBook because Macs don\'t seem to crash as much as PC\'s but the Macs are just so gosh darn tootin expensive.

i\'ve been looking at getting a lappy for a while now.  I\'ve tried getting a dell on those days when they have those 1/2 off sales (but they sell out in like 15 mins).  All I really want is built-in wi-fi and decent enough to play some older games.

I\'d say go with the dell

All depends on yer needs. Lately, I\'ve been Mac biased, despite my long love affair with  PCs.

Im just looking for something basic. I just need a word processor, the Internet (wireless would be nice) and a good CD burner. My price range is from 500-800 but I\'m only paying 700,800 if its worth it.

I just don\'t like them. Yes...they\'re cheaper...but they also feel cheaper. They definitely screw you on quality. I\'ll pay extra for something that doesn\'t feel like it\'s going to break every time I use it.

can tell you never owned one

your options are limited, if you want to do the least amount of gaming on a notebook

here is your order for a solid all-around notebook

1. sager
2. dell
3. ibm

wanna get ripped off?

1. alienware
2. sony

everything else is trash

The dell my friends have are giant paper-weights.  Heavy as shit too.

*hugs powerbook*

(I don\'t need it for gaming, so save me the talk)

Wow...what a smart conclusion you came up with. I was talking about past experiences with owning a DELL laptop.

Oh no! People have their own opinions stemming from personal experiences in the world of computers! Oh no!

Heh... my bro was always screamin\' about the superiority of apple...then he wanted to play me some music, and his subwoofer kept cutting out. I said "let\'s plug in some other speakers and see if that\'s the prob"

oh wait, they\'re "special" speakers, what a surprise! Then they had to get a new one last month because guess what? His wifey needed to run progs on 2 different OS, and the G$ couldn\'t handle it. So they got a dual pro G5 monster from the apple store...3 times... 1st one wouldn\'t boot up, 2nd one sound card no good, and finally they insisted on starting up the 3rd one in the store...BINGO! except since they started it in the store, where there is a wifi driving all display models, it now defaults to wifi every time they turn it off. WHEEE!!!! it looks pretty, though...

Well, those go without saying.... ;)

I was just pointing out that macs don\'t have their very own baby jesus inside of them... :D

Well some of them actually do, can\'t tell you how surprised I was when I found the little bugger in my mac. Now I\'ve never been a parent before, let alone Jesus\'s father so this wil getting some used to.

Any mods planned for the Savior?  Try wrapping his umbilical cord in plastic tubing to improve airflow within the case.

well I\'ve been playing around with the idea of overclocking our saviour, maybe that way we will be saved faster and perhaps get a better framerate too.

I own 2 PCs and a G4 Powerbook. It\'s the 15 incher with 1.25gHz and only half a gig of RAM. I use the G4 for actual work while the PCs are used for games. :D

mm said Macs are for metrosexuals? BWAH! mm is still a virgin. And a dick up his ass doesn\'t count. :p

I\'ll gladly side on that part.  Chizz said he\'s coming too.

I have nothing against macs.  In fact after seeing a colleague do his work in a mac-based dual-screen setup I gained much more respect for the company.  Those things are really nice.

Dude...you can\'t link to the Apple Store. That link is for YOUR SESSION only. Once you leave the page, your session ends and that link is no longer valid.
