Im looking at purchasing world of warcraft (mainly because there\'s a mac version) and was wondering if I could get a quick review of some wow gamers. I used to play FFonline, but I got bored after awhile. Ive heard some great things about this game, but I always like to witness games first hand. Any games that get good reviews here are usually worth trying. So give me your opinions.
-
My advice:
STAY AWAY IF YOU VALUE YOUR PERSONAL LIFE
Most of my friends I met back in college play that now, and I never hear from them! What a drag.
But then if I got into WOW I\'d play with em everyday. hehe
-
I lost my wife to Sims 2 for like 3 months.

Sims 2???
That\'s even gayer than Sims 1 (which I used to play)

People spend more time creating a life in The Sims then they do in real life. If people put the hours and hours playing The Sims into creating their own successful life...well...that would be something.
-
umm no, the sims moves just a little quicker then real life and theres no risks..
-
WTF dude? :stick: I said if people put the same amount of effort into creating their own successful life, that would be a good thing. You\'re bringing some other factor into this that has nothing to do with what I was trying to say.
-
I have played WOW almost everyday sence its launch.
Me and some of my friends have a guild on server Ner\'Zhul. If you get it, your welcome to come play with us there. Were alliance.
P.S. Shadow Priests FTW.
I\'m a nerd.
-
great MMO. casual friendly.. fun for every minutes you\'ll play.
choose your server wisely... and your faction :)
have fun

it just sounds like to me that you\'re saying if people put as much time into their lives as they do in the sims. Their lives would be a just as successful.
ohh and if not.
enjoy being vague. ;)

Highest I got was LVL 22 Night Elf Druid. After that, life just got in the way and I have slowly lost interest. Haven\'t logged in since the last month.
-
anyone know if there is a site I can download it from (leagally that is). otherwise, who the hell carries it?
-
Can\'t download it, but every frickin store that carries PC games should have it.
-
Are there no walmarts in Orlando?
-
Vid, do you still play?
You know you have a 34 warrior that were all waiting for you to come back and play.
-
if I can get it at walmart, ill be picking it up on Sunday... perfect way to spend my sunday, :)

Not true. The first 15 levels are tedious and boring.
-
Im guessing that 15 is the desired lvl to start grouping with people?

It\'s when it starts to pick up, but you\'ll still be stuck in shit-ass groups.
-
Yeah, definatly levels 1-10 are like a tutorial.
-
well, im installing now.. almost done... Ill see if I can join your server luke
BTW: whats FTW?
-
for the win
just get intarweb last week?
-
Ahem, it\'s called the International Cyber Zone... nOOb.
See you in game MP.
-
What level are you now? I am 42 on the other server you made me join.
-
I was kinda pissed, I couldnt join your server cause it was full. I ended up sticking with a new server. I played all day Sunday. Im now a lvl 12 night Elf Druid
-
I\'m on skywall also if you want to jump over there.
-
PvE sucks.
My priest is 35 on Ner Zhul.
If the server is full you can usually get on quick, the queue\'s go fast.
We miss Logster:(

If I switch servers will I lose my lvling?

Leveling is easy - anyone can level from 1-12 in an afternoon. You can even solo your way to 60 if you want.
I have a 60 warrior and a 60 mage on Silvermoon - the mage I got to 60 in just under 7 days played (actual playing time) by following some guide I found in the mage forums at worldofwarcraft.com.
I am now working on a rogue and got him to 15 in 12 hours of playing time. It also helps if your significant other plays as well - my wife even managed to get a 60 Warlock and she now has a 40 Priest as well.
-
I wonder if I could get her to play... Maybe. I could set another computer up and we could play together :) that might be fun

A guide? Doesn\'t take away from the whole indivual aspect of the game?
-
*Does the math*
That\'s a SHITLOAD of time invested in one character you can\'t even call your own.

Exactly.
The whole point is to make your character, your own. A guide to get to lvl 60 takes away any personality your character may have. Takes away from any indivual experience you may have with the character.

I have been to 60 with my warrior doing the quests and I haven\'t changed my faction from the Horde so in order to level the fastest I just solo and AoE kill at the recommended spots. I still did some quests and stayed away from those that don\'t give a good reward or xp.
Back to your question - I want to get as many toons as I can to 60 in the shortest amount of time. Since I mostly PvP now it is a nice change of pace having multiple characters. When I get owned by mages while playing my warrior I can always log on to my mage and get owned by rogues, etc. etc. etc. Anyway, its just a game and I enjoy it. I guess that is all that matters. Besides when the expansion comes out I will have many options - ie. hero classes.
Besides faction what differences are there between something I level quickly as to someone who takes their time? Not much and besides with faction I can always raise it by turning in runecloth in any given city.

Grinding blows IMO. I do a bit of farming at some of the Yeti caves for leather, but I hate that I have to do it. I can\'t imagine grinding for EXP. So freaking boring.
To me the game is great because of the vastness of the experience. Going to different lands in quest of items. SItting around and grinding on bears is pretty freaking dull. But to each his own.
-
Can\'t stand grinding - part of the reason I lose interest. Get to a point, need to grind a level, find real life stuff to do and next thing I know, it\'s been a month since I logged in.
I still say CoH has the best premise for a MMORPG (best character creation also), but the overall aspect is lacking. The developers aren\'t sure where it needs to go and it shows.

Actually AoE killing is much more fun and requires a strategy. How many classes can kill 10-12 mobs at once? Nothing like getting 23k an hour in experience and the loot is fantastic. Then again with my rogue, I haven\'t seen anything kill as fast with no downtime...
Most quests just aren\'t worth doing after level 15 and I won\'t roll an Alliance character - I would be disgusted with myself if I did. As I said my goal is PvP and building faction in both AV and WSG so by the time I hit 60 with my rogue I will be at least honored.
-
So far, I\'ve gotten a crapload of EXP by doing quests. Ive done some lvling here and there, but I kind of enjoy the story. Im getting to the point where Im gonna need to bring a few people along to help with quests. One of my fav things about the game right now is the professions. Ill be switching up my professions tonight. I was learning herbalism and Alchemy, but Im a druid, so Im gonna switch to skinning and leatherworking tonight. Lvling the jobs up doesnt seem to take much time at all... fun times too.
On anther note, I feel stupid asking, but I need to catch up on some of the WoW terminology.. people ask me questions and its like their talking a different language... can someone help me out? I think we should make a comprehensive guide to WoW lingo here (considering so many of us seem to play the game)
-
LFG = looking for group
WC = wanna cyber (nah just made that up)
Can\'t remember any others right now. :)
-
Yeah quests are good for leveling until about level 15. There are other quests afterward that are rewarding, but most involve running from point A to B and become tedious with little payout for the time invested.
Once you have done the quests with a character to 60, its not really worth doing them all again (by all meaning the ones I did do - I don\'t know anyone who has done every quest in the game). By doing those quest to level 15 or so you will become Honored with whatever race you rolled so you will get the normal discounts for items and mounts from vendors.
Some quests are truly not worth doing - even if you want to follow the story so to speak. Others are chains and http://www.thottbot.com is a good place to find out ones that offer a great reward. The Battle of Hillsbrad for example (Horde side) is a great chain for characters in the 20-30 range because you get a blue item at the end of the chain I believe. One last word on quests - by only doing quests you will not have enough gold at level 40 to afford your mount. You still have to grind sometimes just for money and loot.
For the terminology... You have to learn the abbreviations of places mostly.
WC in WoW is Wailing Caverns.
UBRS is Upper Black Rock Spire
LBRS is Lower Black Rock Spire
SM is Scarlet Monestary
RFD is Razor Fin Downs
RFK is Razor Fin Kraul
DM is Dire Maul
UC is Undercity
TB is Thunderbluff
XR is Crossroads
Since I play Horde those are the most common places for that faction.
WTS is Wanting to Sell
WTB is Wanting to Buy
Oh and druids suck, especially queer Night Elf ones ;)
-
Okay Mr Smarty pants, What is the most rewarding class then?

Don\'t go Paladin!
I\'m having fun with a Warlock right now. Rogues are pretty cool too.

LVL 22 - Night Elf Druid
Ask away, bud.
Bear quest is easy...Wait for the Sea Lion, it bites
-
well, I\'m to the point where I have the moondust and have to sprinkle it on some rock. problem is, I cant get to the area without being killed by bearpeople.. They have a lvl of ??? and basically tear me a new A-hole everytime I try to pass through. I can only imagine what the fight is going to be like. Do I need people to come with me?
-
Have no idea about druid quests. The most rewarding class to play? Depends... here are my impressions:
Paladin: A watered down priest who wears plate. Can\'t do much damage and takes forever to kill something. From everyone who has played one I have heard very very boring. Also they have no range attack at all.
Priest: Good caster class. Shadow line deals the damage and you can heal yourself. Cool little invunerable shield as well. Just like the mage they are mana dependant and when they run out of mana they are finished.
Rogue: Very quick leveling. Can chain kill with practically no down time. Tons of escape methods at higher levels. Has nice stuns as well. Downside is they are lightly armored and a good warrior will beat a good rogue almost everytime. Actually most classes can beat a rogue if the rogue does not get a jump on them. Their preferred targets are cloth wearers.
Warrior: Ok DPS (Damage Per Second), but it really depends on how you set up your talent tree. Only one "oh shit" card on a 5 minute cooldown - intimidating shout (fear). No viable range damage and usually get eaten by mages. Personally, as a mortal strike warrior, mages are really the only class that gives me trouble. Lower level warriors tend to be pretty bad in DPS and the class doesn\'t really shine until 60. I know Ryu may disagree with me, but I think Protection spec\'d warriors are particularly boring and limited. At mid levels this class can be discouraging to play especially if soloing.
Druid: Jack of all trades, master of none. Bonuses - they can heal and have multiple shapeshifting abilities. Downside - in bear form they can\'t out tank or out dps a warrior and have only 1 viable instant cast spell when not in animal form - moonfire. On the upside they are very good against mages since they can\'t be rooted or polymorphed due to shapeshifting. Can also root and traveling is easy when in the right form. Definitely not the worst class from what I have seen.
Hunter: Has the longest range in the game and a pet to boot. In PvP I have seen hunters just sit back and send their pet in while they don\'t take any damage at all. They also get some nice aspects to make getting places faster before they get their mount. They can melee up close, but range is their ideal situation. Hunters can also solo with ease.
Mages: Supposedly has the highest DPS in the game. Also has the second longest range. A fire mage spec\'d right can do massive damage in a matter of seconds and take my warrior who has 5k in hp down to half. Can polymorph for crowd control, can frost nova for root, can slow with the frost line, has good instant spells and a good instant area effect spell. Traveling isn\'t as good as a druid or a shaman, but a mage can teleport to one of their factions cities and can use a portal at level 40 to take other people along. Also has blink which teleports the mage 20 yards to get out of trouble and they can also summon their own food and drink to replace health and mana. The downside is they are cloth wearers and very mana dependant - once out of mana they are done.
Warlock: My wife has one of these and with the diminishing returns from fear, I think this class is really nerfed. Though they do well against mages, they have trouble against most other classes in PvP. They do get some "pets" and this does help them solo quite well. On the downside their spells are loaded with backend damage - meaning it takes a while to kill something. Also they have no escape spells other than fear and if they have their voidwalker up they can sacrifice it for a shield. They also rely on soulstones to summon pets (except their imp) and create healthstones and stones that resurrect themselves - while this sounds good, those soulstones do not stack in your inventory and it is quite possible to have almost one backpack devoted entirely to them. When these guys run out of mana they could still fall back on their pet if it is still alive.
Shaman: The Alliance really whine about this class. They heal, wear mail and can dish out damage. They also get a nice wolf form to travel as well. My wife started one of these on the PvP server we are on and so far she seems to be enjoying it so it must be easy.
Anyone else can feel free to add to what I said, but those are either my experiences or impressions from all the classes. I am bored at work so sorry if this seemed like a long description.
-
Oh and one last thing - welcome to Tuesdays. Scheduled maintenance is every Tuesday from 6 AM EST to around 2PM EST. Especially sucks if you are playing from Oz. :)
-
I dont get home til late anyways.. No biggie to me
-
I played a paladin to 40. I like them, you just have to know what to expect.
The thing with paladins is they dont do any damage and are pretty weak with thier healing.... BUT they are super hard to kill.
Right now I have a shadow priest at level 35 and I love it.
-

You forgot that the Druid is one of the single hardest classes to kill, if the character is specced about.

Shaman\'s bite ass. They need nerf\'d in the worst way.
Either way, I imagine I\'ll let my account expire . I canceled it once, came back, played for awhile and now I am back to not playing. I just can\'t justify the price for a game that I only have fun playing 30% of the time.
-
I like my druid. Especially once you get to Dire Bear. My armor is over 4000.
I can take a beating better than Tina Turner.
I\'d have to say it\'s a tough Solo class though. I could rip right through people with my warrior.

Druids are cake against a mortal strike spec\'d warrior. MS cuts off their healing and even if they turn into bear form they don\'t do jack for DPS. The best a druid can hope for is to try and run against a warrior because moonfire spamming won\'t cut it. I think Paladins are the single hardest class to kill due to their shields, armor and healing. Yeah they don\'t do any DPS, but get a paladin down to 25 percent health and even if you have hit them with dot\'s and MS their 2 shields cleanse them and they heal right up.
Also Shaman\'s haven\'t been nerfed as much you think. Just check out the WoW General forums and you will see posts about how overpowered shamans are. Shaman have a good chance to beat every class 1v1 - you can\'t say that about any other class.
Since you are cancelling can I have your stuff?
-
each class and each talent build really make the PvP system a rock&paper game. I know my rogue is good in certain situation and in others i get owned pretty quick.
The druid is a great "group" class. it enhance a group capabilities by tons and can save the day with their multiple abilities.. be it PvP or PvE.
My best character so far is my 60 priest on a PvE server. nice flow of action, never boring and always grouped.
-
I\'ve been working on my jobskills for that last few days... Finally got skinning up to about 100 :) now I gotta work on leatherworking
-
Wow, I got skinning up to 165 at level 16 and my leatherworking is at 116 right now. Made my first deviate scale belt a few days ago - very nice blue item and you can get the pattern and scales you need by doing Wailing Caverns.
I thought Alchemy was easy until I started this profession with my rogue. I also thought my mage killed things quickly, but geez my rogue really kills fast - usually 3 hits and the mob is dead.
-

I\'m Alliance...Well, I got a lvl 18 Orc Warrior - doubt you need anything from that.

I know bro, I was kidding. Everytime someone in the WoW forums says they are quitting the auto response is "Can I have your stuff?"

I played for a few hours last night.. got my druid up to 12 and got my bear form.

Bear is cool, but at 40 you will get Dire Bear. That is much much better.
-
paladins are only good for one thing... Bubble hearthing ;)
Voudium my undead rogue got to level 60 ages ago on Shadowmoon (PVP server)
and i must say the Ganking is very nice indeed..Gadgetzan is my Fav place :D.
Revenge for all the unfair fights i was in from level 10(when i left Brill) to 60.
Also the alliance out number us on Shadowmoon so there is pleanty of the little Assclwons to go round.
-
is the carnival still going on?
-
Well, I let my account expire and this time I uninstalled the game. I doubt I will revisit it ever again. It was fun while it lasted, but I got bored way to easy. Maybe one day they will make an MMORPG for me, one like CoH, well, \'cept not as limiting.
-
I hate this game. I just started 2 days ago and it\'s addicting like crack. Make it stop!
It\'s a fun game though.
-
yeah, its sad that sometimes I think of my MMORPG life more than my real life HAHA. Its Nerd Crack

Go to the Yeti caves. That is the mack daddy for skinning. Whether it be north of South Shore or Ferelas, there are always people in there grinding and you just clean up the mess. Extremely fast respawn rocks.
Also WC is great for skinning too, but in a group of 5, there is usually another skinner.

Come a long way since my last post... Heh.
Someone has been working on their epic gear I see. Though, I must say that the sword isn\'t as great as I thought it would be and now its an easy farm in DM W for the quest that can be done solo.
What shoulders are those? Wrath or Might?
-
The sword requires you to find a book in DM (any named in DM drops it actually) and the drop rate has been nerfed considerably since last major patch. Believe me, when I wanted mine, it took 6 30 minute runs of DM E before Hydrospawn dropped it and since then I have not seen a single one post patch. After you find the book, you turn it into the library where one of the elder night elves explains this long winded story before handing you the "untreated ancient blade." This is where the quest actually lies.
Once you have the hunk of metal, you need to head into Onyxia\'s lair and drop the sword in front of Onyxia -- usually done during the last 10% since dropping the item triggers a 1600 damage flame breath to the MT and whoever drops it. Once onyxia breathes on it, you need to finish out the fight and kill Onyxia. Once dead, you place the now treated blade into her carcass and cool it. Once complete, you return the blade to the night elf in the DM library who completes the hilt of the sword and hands it to you.
Though damage wise, the sword isn\'t anything to write home about, the proc itself makes it an MT\'s wet dream and the fact that it procs about once every 5-10 swings on average is impressive enough. You can check out its stats in the links below.

You can easily farm for the book as of now. All you have to do is run into DM W alone and skip the wandering trees, see if the book or a chest is at the end surrounded by some trees standing there, charge in, use intimidating shout, loot and run out. Reset the instance with a guildie, rinse and repeat.
I notice you are set up quite nicely for PvE, I went the opposite route of getting all my PvP gear.
-
I have over 1100 attack power when buffed with battle shout. I\'m pretty happy about that.
As for the book, I know the trick. A guildie of mine has been doing it for two weeks (I know, I was his reset monkey) and he picked up every class book nearly twice -- except the foror\'s. Easy to do? Agreed. Easily picked up? I disagree.
-
i find this really funny Giga..

Good it is about time they fixed it! I got a ton of tomes as well - made a good amount of money selling them too. I got my tome on about my 7th try resetting the instance, I tried to see if I could get another one, but one never dropped. It would have been nice to sell one for 1500k.

I started a new character (which has kinda turned into my main). A warlock.. Im at lvl 12 now. I love how my VW can pretty much take care of business as I nuke a beast.
-
I need to take some screenshots of my warlock. Im at lvl 21 now (almost 22) and I got my succubus :) Warlocks are great fun. Where\'s everyone at now?
-
33 Paladin.
-
made it to lvl 23. Ive slowed down a little in the lvling process only because Ive been visiting WSG alot! Tons of fun. Theres nothing more satisfying than killing horde and stealing there flag :P
-
Yeah, I realy wanna try out the new BG tonight. I\'m afraid the wait time will be insane though.
-
Ive signed up a few times and gotten in like 10 mins after joining
-
I\'ve did Arathi Bassin 7 times since patch.. and my longest wait time was 12sec~ lol
love it so far.
-
wsg is much beter now.. not nearly as much lag. I hit 24 last night and picked up some new gear. I started using a wand for the first time last night.. makes things better in WSG and when Im farming for stuff
-
I waited an hour and a half last night and never got in.
Do you guys play on low population servers?
-
my server is moderate. I can usually get in, on average, in 15 mins or so
-
60 Warrior
60 Mage
42 Rogue
AB is fun as hell - much better than WSG.
-
What is AB? is it the same idea as WSG? I think tonight Im going to head into BFD for some major lvling and questing. Im at the lvl now where I can make it through with a full group :P
-
29 Warrior. :/
-
What is AB?
Arathi Basssin

looks fun.. what lvl is that good at?
-
ahhh, played quite a bit this weekend. Got to lvl 26. (2 bubbles away from 27) and worked on my professions quite a bit. Got my first aid skills up to about 190 thanks to a guild member. He had to get rid of some stuff and asked if anyone wanted some silk which I needed for silk bandages. I thought he was going to send me a stack or two. He ended up sending me 10 stacks of 20 haha. Does anyone know where I can get the book that teaches heavy silk bandages?
-
For the Horde it is in Duskwallow Marsh. If you are looking for something go to http://www.thottbot.com and do a search - it will tell you right where it is.
Oh and one more thing - DON\'T buy it in the AH - it is sold from a vendor and people (greedy ones) buy it from that vendor and then list it in the AH at a significant markup.
-
yeah, I bought the book on how to make (non heavy) silk bandages for about 3g yesterday. Ive got lots of money in the game so it doesnt really bother me. at somepoint ill start to make myself alot of money in there
-
You call them bubbles?
-
I do too.
-
I\'m just playin\', I don\'t care. :)
-
no, I am very offended.
I really wish we would all play on the same server :(
-
I think my warrior is still at 34. I went on a couple times to play, but I get hacked up every time in less than 5 minutes. So annoying.
-
it would be great if we all played on the same server. Unfortunately. Im not willing to start ALLL over again, and I have a feeling either are you guys haha. I tried to get on your server when I started, Luke, but it was full
-
Yeah I know. Me and Jar O Pickles are making Horde characters on Detheroc, a new server. Ner Zhul is tooooooo full.
-
anybody\'s character get sick yet?
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050921-5337.html
-
I went to IronFordge last weekend and everyone was dead. It was that very plague. Its over now though. once you come back to life, im sure the sickness is gone. It was creepy seeing everyone dead like that though
-
so you startt a new character on a new server and don\'t tell anyone? Ner Zhul sucks ass. I hate it. I can\'t play more than 2 minutes without getting killed by some 50+ puss.

Im guessing your on a PVP server? I picked a normal server so I can turn that on and off
-
I am on a normal server now and it\'s great. I was on narzhul with luke before and every once and a while I log on to see if Luke is on. I play for about 5 minutes and realize why I hate it.
If you go anywhere the other race frequents you are screwed if you are solo.
-
That doesnt bother me as much... I kill people as much as they kill me so I deal with it.
The new server were on is PvP too. It just doesnt feel right to me anyway else.
I HATE seeing a horde character 2 levels below me and not being able to attack them.
-
Until you want to quest solo in an alliance area. Then it\'s worthless.
