So my Mitsu finally died, been in the family for 15 years. Now the family wants to get a new tv and I\'d appreciate some advice from the tech heads in here on what\'s a good buy. Keep in mind, I\'m moving out in a month so it\'s not really for me, but for my mom. Price range is around $500-$1000. Oh and she\'s convinced she needs to go for an HDTV.
-
not gonna get a good HD for 500-1000$
projection or ED maybe
-
Suggestions with explanations why would be much appreciated. I\'m basically lost, so any help would be great.
Edit: also any sites, or places with steals would be great too.
-
I paid $1,300 for my Hitachi HD 52inch.
-
you need to give us some info
what size you want?
crt? lcd? plasma? dlp?
-
Lots of variables.
Table top tv or floor standing?
Would she mind a rear projection?
That\'s really about the only thing you are going to get for under a grand that will be large enough to enjoy.
Although just to warn you, CRT rear projection units will be a "What the hell is that huge thing?" in about a year.
-
You\'re replacing your dog with a TV?
-
she\'s thinking around a 32 inch screen (the old one was 35), doesn\'t have a preference on CRT or projection (or anything else) but there is a lot of glare where the TV will be. She\'s willing to buy a stand for the TV.
And we already have one hulking beast of a TV, might as well have another.

no Evis,
the 15 years mitsu is short for mitsubishi. Or a brand name of a tv.
The Sony CRT 30XS955 seems like a nice set. It have built in hd-tuner so you don\'t need external hd tuner to watch over the air hd broadcast.
It also have a super fine pitch with a detail of 1,400 lines of resolution. Total resolution is 1400 x 1080i.
I am a fan of CRT for its deep black and contrast ratio. No other format display come close to reaching a crt deep black or have a contrast ratio as high as CRT. The only problem with this set is that is kind of expensive, $1,200...

If you can find a store that sell it cheaper, say a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Go for it, its a great deal.
Sony have another 30" set, the 30 HS420. The major difference is the 30 HS420 lack built in hd tuner, and doesn\'t have super fine pitch. So it can only resolve a resolution of about 900 x 1080i maximum. Price is $900.

You gotta decide if the extra resolution and built in hd tuner worth another $300.
Most 2004 and later hdtv have HDMI input. Including the two TV model mentioned above. So you can connect future video source via hmdi (a digital video and audio connection in one cable). Such as: Blu Ray player, PlayStation 3, HD-DVD player, etc.

Oh...he was talking about it like it was a damn dog. And a dog\'s lifespan is usually around 15 years. And Mitsu sounded like Shitsu. :p
So my Mitsu finally died, been in the family for 15 years.
I need to wake up now...
And I know what f^cking Mitsubishi is.
-
Yes, my dog died and we mourn by buying a new TV. Paul2 was wrong. Continue
-
Yes.
-
I\'m confused.
-
LOL. Maybe my joke is so off and weird that sometimes its hard to understand...:p

Don\'t be, ignore both Paul\'s and my comments and you\'ll be just fine.

Nice set. If you are going to go with a small CRT, definitely buy a widescreen set. Networks are not pushing towards 4:3 in the next couple years, they are pushing towards 16:9 and extremely fast.
As far as the tuner goes. Don\'t even bother if it\'s only an OTA antenna. If you go Direct TV, it has a built in OTA antenna. If you go Cable, you don\'t need one as well.

-
It\'s on sale at HHgregg, that just happened to be the first site I could find the TV at.

Oh man, I\'d get the first one. That second TV is frickin\' tiny!!!
-
I\'d suggest Brick and Morter as well.
Your main thing is that since it\'s for your mummy, do you really want to deal with it after you leave?
Buying from a B&M allows your mum to take it somewhere if it breaks.
Buy online and you will have to deal with it.
-
Ok, let me clarify this AGAIN. The site was only used because I wanted to show the TV (It\'s not where we plan to buy it). It\'s on sale at Hhgregg AKA, the store down the street (the place we plan on buying it at).
-
that sounds like a nice deal for a 46" Toshiba.

its actually the same size, 30". Its just the size of the pictures are different. But again, a 30" widescreen isn\'t really that big.
-
Wow, this thread is jam packed full of misunderstood jokes.
-
30" is pretty small. Only problem you will have is 4x3 material will have to be stretched. But usually old people don\'t know the difference.
