Microsoft Sets Price for Xbox 360 Versions

Microsoft Corp. said its next-generation Xbox 360 game console would cost $299 to $399 when the device is launched this holiday season.
The $299 version will come with a wired controller, but will not have the 20-gigabyte hard-disc drive, wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless television remote control included in the $399 version.
So the $299 comes without backwards compatibility and Live support (MC or HDD required).

The premium package includes an Xbox 360, a detachable 20-GB hard-drive, a wireless controller, faceplate, headset, a component HD AV cable, an Ethernet cable, and for a limited time, a remote controller.
The Core 360 System is stripped down in comparison. It includes an Xbox 360, one standard wired controller, a faceplate, and a standard AV cable. The $399 package is designed for the high-definition gaming era; the other is designed for a no-frills, current-gen set-up. Presumably both systems come with power cords, though Microsoft\'s press releases didn\'t actually include them.

The PS2 HD was lame. I don\'t like the hd on Xbox being an option because that limits it for the future. At present, I only use it for a memory card and stereo, but limiting it is a stupid idea. With online becoming bigger, it\'s silly to stop future developments for an initial $100.
Both prices are still expensive anyway.
How I read it: For $400 you get an Xbox 360. For $300 Microsoft will shit in a box for you.

Why do I have the felling ever since it was revealed that Sony’s PS3 was going to be in the $400 price range that M$ then decided they too, could get away with selling it at the price point.

Guarantee you M$ would have sold the unit for $299 if Sony had kept the price competitive against them.

All I can do is second the fact that multiple versions spells the doom for 360. What would make the developer require the hd when they can\'t gurantee all their user base will have one. This is fucking retarded and ultimately makes it so I\'m not buying a 360.

We\'ve heard from developers that because there will be some customers without hard drives for their 360s, that developers are mad that they can\'t automatically utilize the hard drive like in the original Xbox.
I think what you want to do is leave the option open. One of the things we did with the first Xbox was we said, "Look, party on the hardware all you want. You can use 100 percent of the resources in the very first Xbox." And that locked us in to having the exact same spec going forward for the first five years. We can\'t take the hard drive out of the Xbox because it breaks Halo. It breaks launch titles. And so we didn\'t want to have that constraint again, so we\'ve been selective this time, and we\'ve said to developers, "Hey look, don\'t bank on the hard drive always being there. There may be a scenario in the future where we don\'t want to have a hard drive, and in that case, we have to make sure that the games that you\'ve created are accessible to the broadest possible audience." And that\'s what they want as well. So we\'re saying, "Don\'t bank on it, but use the crap out of it, because there\'s gonna be a ton of machines with hard drives no matter what happens in the future."
We worked on it with them, and one of the things we did was we ended up going with a high-speed optical drive; a dual-layered DVD solution, which is 12x read speed on both layers. That gives them really good read-through performance, and allows them the ability to do a lot of things they used to do on the hard drive on the disc. It also gives them more capacity on the disc with some of the compression stuff that we did that they used to use the hard ddrive for.
Whta I won\'t do is what PlayStation did in this last generation, which I think is really dangerous, which is to say, "Use the spec of the machine, and we\'re gonna keep sellling more machines that you can sell more games on," and then redesign the system in a way that you can\'t play that game any more. If I was Square, I\'d be furious at the PS2 redesign [Final Fantasy XI was only playable with a hard drive, which the redesign did not support - ed]. Great, you redesigned the system and lowered the price to get a broader audience for Sony, but not for me? That\'s terrible.

1)We dont know how the consumer will act exactly on the price
2)we dont know how many will pull back from the more expensive version since they might want to invest on PS3 too
3)We dont know if the new consumer who has never experienced Live knows how important is the HD.
4)We dont know if the new consumer or the old consumer (who didnt have Live previously) sees online play important enough to purchase the more expensive version
5)we dont know how game prices will affect the buyer\'s choice between the 2 versions

Number one is trite. PS3 will probably cost more.
Realistically speaking, if you are even considering to get a fully loaded x360 with 2 games at launch, saving up enough money for a PS3 in a year or more should not be a problem.

With all the noise being made about the price and package options someone must have missed this tidbit of information. Apparently according to a translation of the French site Jeux-France MS also announced that all previous XBox games would be backward compatible with the new hardware. Of course you will need the HDD, but who actually planned on purchasing the Core system anyways??
Here is the rough translation:
- Microsoft presents their stand at Games Convention 2005 and their partnership with the living room. The figures of sales are revealed.
- 2 million users in Xbox Live, the list of the g on Xbox is approached, Microsoft announces that all the games on Xbox are compatible with Xbox 360
- the characteristics of Xbox 360 are evoked. The console is finished and in commercial version.
- an American representative of Microsoft exposes the various possibilities of connections of the console and the use of Xbox Live. The interface is shown in detail on Xbox 360.
- Ipod and a PSP are connected to Xbox 360, the representative shows the musical interface and of transfer of the console.
- Microsoft announces that all the editors work on Xbox 360 and with compatibilities online of the console. A representative of Electronic Arts arrives on the scene to speak about the console on which all the licences of the American firm will be present.
- Call of Duty 2 is announced of exclusiveness on Xbox 360, a video of Project Gotham Racing 3 is shown.
- Presentation of Final Fantasy XI and very beautiful Kameo: Elements of Power.

The only way I see MS not screwing this is that the availability of 2 versions will be temporary releasing in the future only one version that will have an HD when cost falls.

If this is true, that barely makes up for the idiocy of having two versions. They should just outright release it at $400 and be done with.

Its important to sell as well as possible during launch.So it would be a good idea to pull some hesitating buyers and get better userbase numbers.
Releasing a cheaper version after a period of time (like 8 months) that includes a HD wont hurt as much.Games good enough or exploiting fully XBOX Live will be available later like months after launch anyways.

While a slightly different situation, I can\'t help but think of the PSP value-pak. It seems there are several million people out there who didn\'t mind getting all the extras, and for an already expensive machine.
Anyone who thinks this is the end for Microsoft is being stupid.
IMO, I think it\'s a bad idea. The HD should be standard.

I don\'t get it ps3 won\'t have an Hdd and everyone said so what. Xbox had and hdd and it was useless. How can developers be mad that the hdd is sold in a different version of the xbox when not many xbox games even fully utilized the hdd. I can\'t think of one that took full advantage of it.
And the 400 dollar 360 comes with a shit load of accessories.

But I havent seen a real playable next gen title featuring anything revolutionary, new, or fresh in terms of gameplay.Now I may be wrong since I havent playied any of them but reading previws its like the previous generation only better looking.
I hope gameplay nearing atleast something similar to what the Killzone "tech" demo presented will appear later after developers get used to the technology.
So far the only game taking my attention as a real playable next gen game is Gears of War.

This doesn\'t cripple developers. This allows them to meet the standard and give a few extras for those with a HD. It is, and always has been, their decision on whether or not they would take advantage of the HD anyway.

But the core game will be available to EVERYONE. Those with the HD will get extras if the developer chooses to include such things. This doesn\'t cripple the developer.

What\'s the problem? They were told from the beginning not to count on the HD. That is, in other words, that their games must be fully functional without the HD. The only question for developers is whether or not they want to add in extra content (goodies) for those with the HD.
What are you talking about then?

Started the selling of my soul this weekend. Plunked down 60 bucks toward X360 and Perfect Dark 0. The launch line up is pretty weak. I\'m not looking forward to PD0.

Retail chains can sell the system however they want. That\'s not bullshit, that\'s not a sugarcoat, or an excuse. It\'s just a fact. If you don\'t like how EB is selling the Xbox 360 then take it up with EB.

The only thing I remember about E3 is that Microsoft was still in the process of figuring out how to go about the Xbox 360 being backwards compatible. They never specified how, or maybe they did.
