Title: Bethesda (Oblivion 4) responds to HDD news
Post by: Riku on August 18, 2005, 10:37:22 AM
and apparently they\'ve known since the beginning.

Quote
Ever since Microsoft\'s announcement of the Xbox 360\'s pricing structure, gamers everywhere have been wondering if developers will take full advantage of the hard drive since it\'s not a standard accessory with every system. After all, why would a developer want to risk excluding a large segment of the 360 gaming market?

Bethesda, maker of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for Xbox 360, has previously boasted considerable use of the hard drive for its massive RPG. Many gamers are wondering if they can still play Oblivion if they purchase the hard drive-free Core System. We contacted Bethesda directly to find out.

"We\'ve known since day one that there would be versions of the 360 without a hard drive, so Oblivion will still work on every 360," assures Todd Howard, executive producer at Bethesda. "That being said, Oblivion takes full advantage of the hard drive and uses it extensively, so we\'d certainly recommend that everyone gets one."

This indicates that the hard drive can be tapped for more than just MP3 and photo storage. It seems developers are not afraid to utilize the hard drive for optimizing load times and streamlining their games much like the original Xbox.

Game Informer has also heard rumblings that Microsoft mandated all Xbox 360 games be playable without hard drive assistance (MMOs are excused from this requirement). It\'s up to the developer to choose how much hard drive optimization to include in their games from that point.

Be sure and pay close attention to the bold part.

My Xbox I bought on launch day finally crapped out a couple of weeks ago.  Well actually just the HD did.  My bro is into that damn Live service and downloaded all this stuff onto it.

A poor excuse for it to get damaged (and even worse that we had to buy a whole new Xbox), but it\'s nice to know we won\'t need the HD to play most games.

meh, i\'d love to see every dev make changes to thier game to allow use of the HHD "if" present

Making games hard drive aware isn\'t bad.

Apparently you\'re selecting some of the information and then twisting it around so you can make it a negative.

Bethesda says they\'ve known since the beginning that to make the game functional without the HD.  There are obviously advantages to having one and we\'ll have to see how developers make use of that.

Microsoft said a LONGGGGG time ago not to count on the HD always being there.

negative?

it\'s reality.

every dev for every xbox game is going to have to say "wait, we can\'t do that cause some jackass with the core version might not have a hard drive. do we put this content in still?  how behind  on schedule are we?"

there is NO advantage to be seen, microsoft is fucking up badly

try 20+ years experience as a gamer and i have what you guys might call "common sense"

if dev\'s can\'t rely on hard drives being there, they won\'t get heavily used.  i know, it\'s a hard concept to grasp.
Title: Bethesda (Oblivion 4) responds to HDD news
Post by: Avatarr on August 24, 2005, 03:50:42 AM
I like that version better. You were trying to say that not having the HDD was a doomsday thing that would break the platform. It certainly wouldn\'t be as dramatic as developers witholding content because there isn\'t enough memory on the system.

but they will be crippling innovation that is expected on next gen gaming.

lets say they make a game where textures and levels seamlessly and dynamically  change over the course from day to night.  would be great, right?  well, thats alot of work when a large portion of machines won\'t have the storage space for all that.

granted, the hard drive wasnt very utilized on the xbox, mainly because it was generally  a new concept.

again, this is a marketing gimmick by microsoft to force people into buying the 499$ SKU.  they take the 399$ SKU, and throw in 10$ in production cost of accessories and "OMGZ! what a great deal!!1  i\'m saving teh moneys!!!1"

people are being scammed and don\'t even realize it, sad
Title: Bethesda (Oblivion 4) responds to HDD news
Post by: Avatarr on August 24, 2005, 04:41:50 AM
dude that example is totally stupid. there\'s this thing we call dynamic lighting and we don\'t need to swap textures to make them look right in day/night conditions. if you\'re suggesting a hard drive should be used in that manner, then you\'re taking quite a number of steps BACKWARDS.
Title: Bethesda (Oblivion 4) responds to HDD news
Post by: seven on August 24, 2005, 05:06:05 AM
I think you\'re taking his example out of context really. The point is, harddrive would have gave the xbox 360 quite an advantage - which ultimately just flew out the window by offering 2 skus. There\'s no need to find any examples.

The good developers will be able to achieve that and more with what they have.  There is cacheing on the Xbox 360, and there\'s tons of ram.

There really isn\'t a drawback considering that Microsoft\'s competitors aren\'t offering internal HD\'s.  So, yeah, what\'s the problem?

There are two sku\'s - $299 and $399.  Anything different is set by the retail chain.  Don\'t exaggerate, thanks.

The premium package is a deal considering that the individual components all together would cost you more than the bundle.

Find some facts then come back, thanks.

But you don\'t even have a case.  You don\'t have any evidence in the form of facts, and that means you don\'t have any clue what the mark-up is.  What\'s the precentage of the mark-up?  How much is it sold for over costs?  Is it outrageously marked up more than similar type goods?

Where in the hell is your arguement?

I think MS were teh smart with the two models. I mean, little Johnny will get the core version for Christmas (because of the cost). Then later when he complains about the shitty system he got, they\'ll have to upgrade - and the HD upgrade alone will be 100 bucks.... cha ching! I suppose they learnt from DELL. ;)

Yeah. And if you get the core system, you\'d have to get the memory unit to be able to save your games. So for $60 more you get the HD, headset, cables etc.

No wonder MS hopes to sell a lot of core systems. :p

Latest info from IGN is that most developers are still using beta dev kits.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/647/647185p1.html

I think MS is too desperate to launch a year in front of Sony. The more and more I prepare for the Xbox 360 launch the more I start to wonder if it\'s worth bothering.

Indeed I wholeheartedly agree. I have made mention of this many times that M$ premature launch is going to suck. Dev\'s have had hardly enough time to justify launching any game. Most launch titles look like ports quickly transferred over to x360 in order to slip into the launch window.

You are a sucker mm,  like when the XBOX came out which you said was not worth buying, yet magically like always you ended up with one shortly after launch, and made the excuse that it\'s purchase was one of convenience, (something along the lines that you got it for $100 used) You did the same thing with Kill Bill, bash the living hell out of it, without even seeing the film and then when many criticized you for that, again your imaginary girlfriend draged you to see it, LOL.

wah, wah no HD-dvd = worthless , funny I thought  #1 primary reason for purchasing a console was to play games? So XBox360 lacking HD-dvd is going to rune/hamper the gaming experience? All you are doing is cherry picking any issue you can come up with to make the 360 look less attractive. At least I give practical valid reasons for not wanting to purchase the 360.

Kill Bill was so, so, nothing great.

mm that\'s irrelevant whether you got it used with a free blow job. You made a big stink how Xbox sucked as well as it\'s games. Therefore when you pay for the bloody thing it only further illustrates how much a hypocritical pest you are

Also even "if" M$ does indeed release a HD-dvd version, there will be 0 games on the HD-dvd format so who cares. HD-DVD will be nothing but an upgrade for those looking to watch HD movies.

This is what the general consensus  considers to be gay in this society Phil. Its ok I understand you lack the ability to differentiate between heterosexuality and homosexuality (which clearly you are)

PS. Try to be original instead of copying mm tactic\'s, like you did with the dictionary link. Man you are lame.

:D
