October 2004
When did this calamity happen? It hasn\'t—yet.
http://205.188.130.53/ngm/0410/feature5/
Thousands drowned in the murky brew that was soon contaminated by sewage and industrial waste. Thousands more who survived the flood later perished from dehydration and disease as they waited to be rescued. It took two months to pump the city dry, and by then the Big Easy was buried under a blanket of putrid sediment, a million people were homeless, and 50,000 were dead. It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States.

Yea, in my Geology class my science teacher couldn\'t help but going off on crazy tangents. I remember one of them was about how not natural the river setup was down there and eventually with it slowly sinking that something terrible is going to happen.

my brother said his teacher like 4 months ago said new orleans would be screwed if a hurricane hit them because they were under sea level. low and behold..
sorry if that was in the article..i read too much for class today, dont feel like doing more.

Your brother\'s teacher is a genious.
City+Under Sea Level+Potential path of numerous hurricanes=fucked up

It was never a question of whether or not this would happen, only a question of when. National Geographic or Discovery had a special about this about a year ago, they described exactly what would happen. Sad thing is that this could have been avoided if they had a levee to with stand more than a category 3 hurricane. I\'ve only heard that the federal/state government denied a budget for a better levee. Now they will have to spend mega dollars to pump all the water out of the city, reconstruct, and, hopefully, build a proper levee system.
-
I wonder what they spent the funds on instead- any way to find out.
New roads?

Btw slightly off-topic I thing I saw in Euronews that Europe will send supplies, staff and financial help.

I\'m sure everyone who can help will do whatever they can.
What I don\'t get is all these little bitch whiners that expected the entire world to drop whatever they were doing and come to our aid. Realize that it does take some time to organize relief efforts. If I remember correctly it was a few days before we (financially) responded to the tsunami distaster.

like i said in the other thread
local, state, and federal govt should have had supplies waiting. they should have expected thousands and thousands of people in LA to do nothing but sit on thier ass and expect to be supported.
so now it\'s a suprise when people come out of the woodwork with nothing but the clothes on thier back
