Wasn\'t it the Dreamcast that launched on 9/9/99?
If that\'s the case, maybe I\'ll celebrate by picking up a third DC title on Ebay. Any suggestions?

Samba De Amigo
Power Stone
Grandia II
Skies of Arcadia
Jet Grind Radio
Classic Dreamcast titles.
-
Oh interesting, the memory. I was surprise how times have fly.
-
Grandia 2 was the best RPG I\'ve ever played.

I\'m leaning towards Power Stone, but I don\'t know anything about it or Grandia 2. Maybe an RPG would be fun to get into...
Last one I played was Paper Mario.

There was this arcade game I forgot its name.It reminded a bit of Gradius with great looking 3D graphics and your ship could shift into two forms.A blue and red one.
Some stages viewed the action from top down like Space Invaders and other stages from the side like Gradius.
Damn.What was the game called?
-
Ikaruga?
-
Ikaruga was black and white, not blue and red wasn\'t it?

Grandia II has the best battle system of any RPG to date. The story is decent enough. Get it.

It was black and white you, dofus. Not red and blue. It was by Treasure and a psuedo-sequel to Radiant Silvergun.
-
Grandia II\'s battle system was definately great. Didn\'t care much for the game outside of that, though.
Ikaruga rocked.
-
ummm.. I liked hidden and dangerous. And I still think tony hawk had the best park editor on DC. Rayman was great too....
*misses my DC... I gave it to a co-worker\'s 6 year old a couple years ago.
-
Capcom VS Snk2, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Shenmue.. to name a few..
-
Man dreamcast was awesome. I can\'t believe a console like that could not last. Just shows how stupid gamers are.
-
exactly
-
And how bad Sega\'s marketing was.
-
....and how badly Sega screwed their fans ( especially outside the USA ) in the Megadrive - Saturn era with the Megadrive 2, the Megadrive CD and the 32X farces.
Really... alotta ppl talk too much about Sega like it has always been the Saint of gaming
-
Back in the early 1990s, I owned both Sega Genesis and SNES. I don\'t think I see any Sega CD or Sega 32X being mention or shown. Although I do remember seeing Sega CD games in store but that it.
I remember Atari Jaguar on TV commercials and stuff. In later years, I noticed Sega Saturn in commercials too. Then N64 Mario game was being shown. Around those time, the cool thing is we never bought any consoles whatsoever. I remember back in 1997, a girl told us to buy PlayStation instead because my brother thought about getting N64. But we never bought any which is probably the right thing we did, especially not getting the N64.
Until I went to high school in 9th grade in 1998/1999, I made a cool friend and I can\'t really remember how but he has playStation games and I was into games too. Then bam, I got my mom to bought me a PlayStation. Then I remember the first game he let me borrowed was Final Fantasy VII. And everything was history.:D
-
So, your point is ?
-
nothing. Just bored, feels like sharing one of my memories since I am bored and random memories (both good and bad) kept popping into my mind. Believe me, being isolated inside the house most of the time for the past few years will do that to you. And it make me realize a lot of things that I didn\'t thought about...
-
Isolated inside a house for the past few years ? I know I\'m not much of an outgoing type, but that just sounds extreme and thus eerie

Not the saint of gaming, but most people also forget that they was a strong company that lacked direction for awhile. By the time the DC came around, they was getting back on their feet. It was just simply to late. They had been killed by Sony\'s hype machine also known as crap-ass PS2 launch.
-
PS2 launch rocked
unsure which PS2 launch you\'re talking about
-
I could think of many reasons why DC died and didn\'t sell as well as PS2 beside just hype.
PS2 predecessor dominate the videogaming market heh, makes a lot of videogame owners especially PSOne owner eye the PS2. Sega on the other hands, failed on many of their consoles attempt such as Sega CD, 32X, and even the true console Sega Saturn died a quick death that I don\'t see them in late 1998 and 1999.
Sega finally learned their mistake and sell a Dreamcast with a reasonable price tag unlike Saturn which was overpriced when its first launched at $400. but you are right, its was too late. they lost most of their loyal fans because of sega\'s past mistakes.
The next reason why PS2 is successful is because of DVD-Video playback. Sure, the picture quality is below average, but most consumers doesn\'t care and its convenient to play DVD via a game machine so gamers don\'t need to buy a stand a lone dvd player at that time which cost them more money. Sega DC lack the DVD-Video playback to lure gamers because they use their own GD-ROM format which is cheaper.
-backward compatible with their previous games. With a large and popular games from PSOne, its a smart move Sony make to lure buyer to get PS2 so even if PS2 is a failed console, gamers won\'t feel as disappointed because gamers can use the ps2 to play PSOne games or use it to watch DVD Video. I gave away my PSOne when I bought my PS2. I thought about giving it away to my cousin but i let my sister borrowed it because she wanted it for her kids.
of course the obvious reason for PS2 success is videogames. Lots of 3rd party supports and lots of great games were made for PS2 than its competitor. yeah, hype does play a role in it and i shamely admit that I was one of those gamers that actually buy the hype.
-
sony is all hype thats why you and millions others have one
-
sure Sony doesn\'t need much to hype their consoles as the consumers does that for them.
Final Fantasy series is one of the reasons why I bought PS2 beside the one I mentioned above. As funny as it may sounds, Square make quite a number of games for PS2, but the only game I bought is FFX. Now, I am eyeing the FFXII as it maybe my next purchase.
Heh, look at the Dreamcast, it does resemble PlayStation One in many ways. As if Sega wanted to hope gamers will fall for it but no thanks Sega.
-
PS2 launch rocked
unsure which PS2 launch you\'re talking about
I hope that is sarcasm. Because honestly, the games looked like crap and played like crap. Infact, the first game everyone thinks of with the PS2 is SSX and come on, it was average at best...
My DC launch was......
Soul Calibur
House of the Dead 2
Trickstyle
Blue Stinger
Sonic Adventure
PS2
SSX
Tekken Tag
Ridge Racer V
Unreal Tourament
Timesplitters
Summoner
I remember staying up more than 24 hours enjoying my DC on 9/9/99. It was a grand event. Then I remember the PS2 launch.. I go home, tried each game and said "this sucks", I even posted it on this very board. Know what happened? I put in a dvd movie and went to sleep within an hour of gettin\' my PS2. It was simply not that amazing. I had seen the 128bit generation done better already.
-
looked like crap, as compared to what?
i\'m looking at the list of titles, and no clue how you think PS2 launch sucked
blue stinger?
lol
don\'t get me wrong, i love my DC and it\'s launch was fine. just disputing that the PS2 launch "sucked"
-
Lol Blue Stinger? That was one of the worst DC games.Actually one of the worst games I ve ever tried out.
Anyways one of the reasons why PS2 didnt made the same impression as the DC did to many was because the DC had already introduced the 128 bit generation to gamers a year before.
DC was a huge leap from the previous generation. But people compared the PS2 to the DC, not the previous generation and that leap was smaller ofcourse.
When I first saw the DC I was like WHOAH THATS JAW DROPPING!Ofcourse that changed later. Some of the same games didnt look as impressive or as interesting as before when the PS2 was released. The "wow factor" fell for me for both PS2 and DC and increased slightly later when developers started getting the grips of the PS2 hardware.
House of The Dead 2 didnt play differently from House of the Dead1 and I lost the original interest
Blue Stinger playied and looked like CRAP!
Trickstyle rocked my world and SSX was easily a good replacement
Soul Calibur was always great. But atleast for me TTT was as good purchase as Soul Calibur would have been since I was a huge Tekken fan and was spending hours on TAG at the arcades.
I still play Sonic Adventure though on my PC ;)
Puts Sonic Heroes to shame
But overally both launches were good
-
the only "bad" launch i\'d give a mainstream console was either atari jaguar or virtual boy.
-
No one said that Blue Stinger was a great game , but it was better than say, Summoner.
-
apples and oranges
-
apples and oranges
Yeah, you can\'t compare the two. That\'s like saying "Halo 2 is WAY better than Gran Turismo 4 in every way!!"...
-
Mmmkay...
How about this.......
The PS2 lacked a stand out title, other than SSX (and I\'d argue that one), where as the DC launched with three stand out titles (Sonic Adventure / Soul Calibur / House of the Dead 2).
-
That doesnt make a big difference really
-
sorry, LIC
still not in agreement

That\'s fine - but what great games was out at PS2 launch?
-
....you listed a few of them them already
PS2
SSX (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/198685.asp?q=ssx)
Tekken Tag (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/250631.asp)
Ridge Racer V (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/198478.asp?q=Ridge%20Racer%20V)
Timesplitters (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/258285.asp?q=timesplitters)
all were highly regarded and well reviewed.
just because you didn\'t personally like them doesn\'t mean they weren\'t great.
-
Tekken Tag? It was a high res version of Tekken 3.
Ridge Racer V - Was a jaggy mess and more of the same.
Timesplitters - Boring, \'cept for a level editor.
-
Tag is a fuckin\' classic. But I\'m an arcade Tekken whore, so bleh..
-
Yea, and I\'d like to stick up for SSX. I didn\'t think it was average at all. I played it at a friends and ended up buying two sequels on its coattails. I\'ll probably get the next one, too. Peach on skis, plz.

-
Anyway, I sense , the ppl who are sour about DC\'s demise and sour towards PS2 are even more sour against PS3 without any logical foundation.
-
tue
-
again, LIC
just because you didn\'t like them....
-
Except from the tag feature I personally found other differences between Tag and Tekken3.First of all some low moves if blocked left the attacker stunned for a limited time.
Secondly Namco added moves that werent present in Tekken3 and the moves were more balanced regarding the damage they could inflict.
Also the timing was slightly altered. Not to mention the huge number of characters not available in Tekken3.
House of the Dead2 on the other hand played exactly like House of the Dead1.Only with better graphics.Even most of the enemies were the same as in HotD1.
-
You forgot to mention TTT for ps2 have a much better graphic uplift than TTT on arcade version and Tekken 3 on PSOne too.
-
True but I thought that was too obvious to mention :p
But any Tekken fan who has spent hours on Tag would have found the less noticable but important differences in gameplay too ;)
-
Ow..those old days...
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zonesega.com%2Fimg%2FPub%2FVignettes%2FMegadrive.gif&hash=93f6c30609d2f64c0d13a9db363ef1cf99672919)
Anyway, after that damn fine console, Sega screwed up for me and many Sega fans here in the PAL region.
I must say indeed that I had goodtimes at friend\'s playing their DC\'s , but i never looked back, after the Megadrive/Genesis era.
