Paramount (http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000680061701/)
Paramount Pictures, a company that was previously exclusively backing HD-DVD as the format to replace the DVD, has announced it will also be supporting the rival format, Blu-Ray. Apparently a major reason for the switch in support was the Playstation 3, which will include a next-gen Blu-Ray drive at release.
Warner Bros (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/oct2005/tc2005105_6128_tc024.htm)
Warner Brothers is poised to raise the stakes in what has become a pitched battle over the next generation of digital videodisks, or DVDs. Warner Brothers is expected to throw its weight behind a new generation of high-definition DVDs sponsored by long-time rival Sony (SNE ), BusinessWeek Online has learned....
...Last November, Warner along with Paramount, Universal and New Line Cinema, had said they would provide their movies to the HD DVD disks. For now, Warner would declare "nonexclusive" support for Blu-ray, meaning it could theoretically produce films in both formats.
Still, the support for Blu-ray would indicate Warner Brothers is no longer convinced Toshiba and HD is the only way to go, and it leaves open the prospect of exclusive backing for Blu-ray. Paramount on Oct. 2 said it would make its movies in both formats. Microsoft (MSFT ) and Intel (INTC ), meantime, have thrown their weight behind the Toshiba-led group backing HD DVD...
Sounds good to me :bounce: Universal better wise up fo\' they get dealt wit

Cool. Lets just hope the format competition go by fast so we can have a winner as the standard of next generation High Definition Video player, and this news mean Blu Ray have a bigger chance of winning the competition than HD-DVD.
-
Paul2 what are the specs of each>?

-
I was baiting him into making a 15 paragraph post you bafoon!!
Paul2 please disregard the above comments and post the full specs
-
Actually, EviscerationX link is pretty helpful. I learned something new in there.
-
So soon movies will only be on Blu-Ray? (assuming they win that is). I just got used to buying everything on DVD :(
-
I can imagine Final Fantasy: Advent Children being released on Blu Ray...

No. Expect DVD to be around for at least another five years.
-
VHS is still around too.But people buy DVDs more
-
VHS > DVD
-
VHS > DVD
Yeah, I mean...the video quality is so much better on VHS. And OMFG! The sound!
-
I still don\'t think the general public is goin\' to give a rat\'s ass about Blu-Ray, but this will help Sony win that format war.

It wasn\'t until the last year or two that DVD sales finally overtook VHS. Don\'t worry about the new formats killing off DVD overnight, it\'ll be years.
-
When you walk into a Blockbuster store, you can tell the VHS/DVD war is over. Shitty DVDRs have to be more reliable and affordable before the cassettes are history though.

I think that consumers ARE going to be interested in this. I\'m months away from buying the HDTV I want (prolly 56" or 61")... and you KNOW I\'m going to want HDTV movies with that. A lot of people are looking into HDTV now, prices have dropped so much, if you go CRT you get a huge tv for a bit over a grand. With the cable companies here and in the US talking about going all digital within a couple of years, and all HDTV a couple years after that.... well, a format has got to step up to meet the requirement, and I for one am hoping that blue-ray just comes out, dominates, and precludes any serious attack by the HD-DVD posse.
Frankly, with the cost of movies
(two people, no food 20 bucks, with food 35-40) being what it is, more and more people are just making their home theatre a replacement for going out.
-
Yea the more you think about it\'s not that expensive to manufacture the product. Just newer specs/features based on age-old technology of making an aluminum wafer and slapping it on a 3.5" plastic disc.
As long as a good percentage of the 30 million+ HDTVs owners buy into the technology in 2006, it should hopefully pay for itself soon after. Then all the hillbillies can get in on the fun when prices drop.
-
This HDTV owner won\'t buy into Blu-Ray. I would maybe consider buying it, if the player is cheap enough (I do not want the PS3 player, Sony\'s PS2 DVD playback was shoddy at best). And there is no way I\'ll rebuy movie\'s I already own on DVD.

Heh, I give my brother some knowledge and I asked him which format would he prefer? Blu Ray or HD-DVD?
He said Blu Ray. had I not told how about the existance of blu ray, he probably would go HD-DVD. He never heard either of the two formats. But in the future, he might get HD-DVD because of the letter DVD which is a popular format and he own an HDTV monitor. So, he knew HD stands for high def, and he would assume HD-DVD as the next generation format because naming. and he would skimmed Blu Ray because of the unfamiliar naming.
But after I told him about the two formats and a bit about their spec, he said he\'s going to get Blu Ray then when I asked him which would he pick between the two.
-
I hate to say this again, but..
I have no clue what he just said.
-
I don\'t think my brother have heard of the upcoming video format: Blu Ray and HD-DVD.
I assumed he would pick HD-DVD in the future instead of Blu Ray because of the familiar name HD-DVD.
When I told him about the two formats and its spec, and I asked him which of the two format would he have pick. He said Blu Ray. So, had I not told him about the two formats and their spec. I think he might have pick HD-DVD in the future.

Uh, what\'s not to understand? :)
-
I don’t know where people get the idea they must re-buy their DVD collection? BluRay is backwards compatible, DVDs will still work :)
Just start buying BD versions of new movies coming out, and maybe re-buy some of your favourite movies if you wish.

cliff notes please

Holy shit. Kopking?
-
I don\'t see why you guys have trouble understanding what he said. Sure it wasn\'t 100% gramatically correct, but it wasn\'t exactly incomprehensible either.
-
It wasn\'t even 2% grammatically correct. He\'s fucking Skim milk.
-
And you\'re only using 2% of your brain. There\'s nothing unclear about what he said. He even reiterated his post for you.
-
hey guys, let\'s argue over semantics

Ok.. You are retarded too. Read my post.
Did I ever say it was unclear?
It was just the worst grammar seen on this board since kopking left.
-
Since when did we start caring about grammar on this board? Especially in this case, when you know English is Paul2\'s second language and he\'s doing the best he can with it.
If you understood his point, stop complaining.
-
If I were a mod this conversation wouldnt have happened
-
But you\'re not so POST AWAY!!!
-
Hahaha thanks for playin\' Uni
-
Since when did we start caring about grammar on this board
Since the past 3 years and counting, mostly whenever someone gets into an argument with whom ever, one of the parties will always take the opportunity to point out the badly presented grammar in hopes of further belittling the person.
-
take me down to a paradise city plz

Since we had kopking. We always have been doing this.

Kind of digging up a necropost, but:
Head of Fox Film division thinks blu-ray will win (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=7367). (Although fox sucks anyways :p)
-
the winner will be decided by the porn industry

i remember some discussion on tweakers.net pc forum about that about 2 months ago. Quite some ppl posted why that may not be a valid argument anymore.
Silly that i can\'t really recall WHY anymore. ugh...
-
it\'s because you\'re fat
-
with a BMI at 20 i can only disagree.
You take those words back jumpman. You\'re probably too much out of shape to jump 1 inch :p
-
The BMI means jack shit when measurements and muscle mass aren\'t taken into account. The BMI alone means nothing.
And boobies.

That\'s me ; 177 cm & 62 kg
In usa that\'s 5\'11" and about 144 lbs.
I usually do 2 to 3 cardio workouts (running) per week. I think jumpman has a fat problem himself atm and obviously felt the need to reflect that in his (mostly) negative waves posts. Goodluck getting sane !
-
Yeah I remember you. I didn\'t think you were fat, I just think the BMI by itself is nonsense. You have to include waist measurements, among other things.
the winner will be decided by the porn industry
I heard about this a long time ago and I know the porn industry plays a BIG role because they publish so many DVDs, but I don\'t think they\'re the only thing that will affect the outcome.

6\'3 at 165 kind of thin actually. :(
-
Damn. Hit the weights, homey. And eat your wheaties! :)
