Title: Gas and Energy Prices
Post by: clips on October 06, 2005, 05:09:09 PM
y\'know all i\'ve been hearing lately is that we\'re in some kind of energy crisis....how are we in an energy crisis?! some say it has to do with supply and demand, but c\'mon...the demand has been no different since yesteryear and still gas prices are out of control..is the earth running out of natural resources as we know it, or is the war in iraq a part of it....alot of people say iraq has nothing to do with it, but i think it plays a part...i mean we\'ve been using the same amount of oil over the years in general right? how can there be such a dramatic change and demand for oil in such a long stretch? usually the price for gas goes down during the winter month\'s, yet they are still goin higher, it\'s all bulls**t, and if this is all opec\'s doing then we need to do something about them controlling the oil in this manner....

i\'m ranting now but i heard something just today on cnn, i didn\'t know that canada was the u.s. largest supplier of energy? does this have something to do with that power grid up there? or is it something else altogether?....anyway it just goes to show how dependent the u.s. is for foreign oil and energy any disturbance in the flow of oil will cause prices to soar...pathetic.....

yes, china is a major factor

plus the number of US drivers is increasing over time, as well as the size of our vehicles

gas prices are out of control

It\'s only $1 extra.

Think of it this way; it\'s 2005 and we\'re still relying on the internal combustion engine to haul us around.  We\'re just too short-sighted/lazy/corrupt/greedy to use anything but gas at this point.

Next car is totally gas/electric.

Carpooling til then. Cuts my cost by 50%.

And it still seems expensive, heh.

i agree... even tho a buck more doesn\'t seem like alot, it really is...it used to cost no more than 23.00 to fill up the lex with premium, now it costs me 35.00......add to the fact that these jobs in georgia aren\'t payin nearly what i was getting paid jersey and that s**t is ridiculous....gas prices at one point down here was 6.00 a gallon because of the threat of katrina...that makes no sense.....thank god for the wifey metro...i can still pay fifteen bucks to fill it up on mid grade gas....and it gets like 39 mpg..

I feel you Clips it seems like I\'m wasting money, I have to drive about 20miles each way a day back and forth from work and that sucks even though I get about 28 mpg.

Ditto. I\'ll pay maybe 40-50 a week in gas. If I didn\'t car pool, that\'s $2,400 a year. Since I do, it\'s probably like 2 grand, but when you figure how much you take home and then shave that right off the top... It\'s too bad.

Hey Clips why are you putting midgrade in a Metro?  Not like the 3 cylinders needs it.

Most I spent was $54, now it\'s down to $46.  And all I do is chauffeur pizzas around so I buy gas about twice a week.

COmplete ignorance on your part.

If you car is built for 87, put in 87.  Putting in higher does absolutely nothing.

Higher octane gas is for higher compression engines that build up more pressure.  Higher octane is less volatile so it is able to keep from igniting till the piston gets higher.

If you put low octane gas in a high compression engine it will fire way early and really decrease your performance.  Your engine will probably adjust, but it\'s still not good.

Other way around.  Higher octane gas in engine that doesn\'t need higher octane?  Well that does nothing. You are still firing the spark plug to fire at 10degrees after TDC.  So it\'s money wasted.

thanks for the info Vid, and you\'re right, not that i didn\'t believe you, but after reading your post, i did something 98% of car owners never do...and that\'s...read their owners manual! :p...yep for the lexus it says nothing lower than 93 octance and for the metro it states 87 octane :).....looks like i\'ve been wastin \' duckets like jbean stated...

We learn something new everyday. :)  a sticker on the inside of my maxima\'s gas door says use premium gas for best performance.  I started to use 89 for a while to save money and then I had to replace the knock sensor within a couple of months.

Not sure if it\'s 100% related but all I use now is premium. :\\  I really should have gotten a Sentra.

My Celica says the same thing, it doesn\'t run near as smooth. I have been puttin\' \'89 in and ever since it has been sluggish, then again, I also need to change the oil, it\'s been about eight thousand miles since I changed it.
