Which is better, PCI-Express or AGP?
And if it matters I want to get an NVIDIA graphics card
-
PCI-Express is newer technology
although no game has yet to saturate 8x AGP bandwidth
-
See what your motherboard has, download CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/) and click the mainboard tab.
It\'ll either give you the specs for AGP or PCI-e
-
Well the thing is I\'m looking to buy a computer right now THX that has a PCI-Express slot. I\'m on a pretty crappy computer currently.
The last computer had (something in it burned out and it wont turn on but it dont matter since it is a 1.3ghz and ageIII needs 1.4ghz) a normal PCI slot and a AGP slot. I was told AGP was better for graphics than PCI and it worried me this new computer only had a PCI slot. But it is PCI-Express, which mm said is new technology, so I should be fine, right?
-
PCI-E is to new imo, i\'d go AGP. Simply because while i was in the RMA department at mmt. We got 90% returns on PCI-E cards over AGP. That was about 3 months ago.
-
go pci-e
nvidia isnt making AGP cards anymore after the 7800 series
ati is barely supporting it
-
yeah, the worst thing you could do is buy AGP now... nobody is making cards for that slot anymore
-
PCI-Express.
It\'s not "too new".. AGP is "too old". Soon to be unsupported, killing your upgrade path.
-
There\'s also the fact that PCI-express motherboards can handle bandwidth better and more efficiently. Nice if you have several devices that are all doing something.

u work in RMA do u? it\'s to new, it\'s got problems and i saw lots of them. If he plans on updating his gpu every 6 months. Sure go PCI-E but he\'ll most likely be updating every few years, by then you might as well get a new mobo/cpu too.
-
Yeah, get a PCI-E mobo. It\'s questionable if the newest vga cards in about half a year will even release as a agp version.

Soully it\'ll help you\'re argument if you post some links on the matter, even if it\'s complaints en masse on a geek board. This is the first time I\'ve heard of it.
-
post links? i worked in a RMA department and had shit loads of pci-e cards returned. We were selling agp/pci-e at a 1:1 ratio. That speaks for itself.
-
i dont think so many people returned them as something was wrong with them
but they just bought pci-e and didnt realize they need agp
easier to say "it doesnt work", then "im a moron"
-
point is if you want the best cards available from Nvidia or ATi then you MUST HAVE A PCI-E SLOT. Although I too do question how much better PCI-e is than AGP, it just dosen\'t make sense to buy a system based on something that\'s about to be phased out.
-
How about wait till early next year where they might sorted this AGP and PCI-E slots out before deciding to upgrade the graphic card?
As for now, just use the graphic card you have right now as a temporary solution.
Who knows, by early next year, you might have a better performance card with similiar price tag compare to recent graphic card.

bbbzzzt wrong again. MMT is a wholesaler, so we tested every card that was returned. Most if not all the PCI-E cards had problems.
-
What were the problems? And what were the brands/chipsets?
-
he\'s bullshitting, thx
should know this by now

They were many and varied. Email mmt themselves. http://www.mmt.com.au
as for the brands, it was XFX cards.
oh and mm, bite me.
don\'t believe me, i don\'t really give a shit.
-
sure you do, wouldn\'t respond if you didn\'t
:)
-
nar i\'d still respond. Thats like someone walking up to you, calling you a cock head and you just walk off. Doubt it, even though u don\'t really care. You\'d still tell them to fuck off.
-
PCIE for SLI.
-
actually, soully
if someone called me a "cock head", i would probably
-
before or after they\'ve finished laughing at you?
-
for calling me a "cock head"?
-
that went straight over your head... doesn\'t surprise me.
-
"cock head"
-
Who calls anyone a cock head?
-
quite common saying in australia.. so around 20 million people.
http://territorypictures.tripod.com/pages/oztalk/Oztalk.html
look under C. doh!
-
Theres only 20 million people living in Australlia?
-
currenly 20,414,264 people here estimated growning population from march.
-
how many of those 20,414,264 say "g\'day mate!" ?
-
meaning of cockhead
"so one who is stupid"
hahahaha
-
cunt heads

donno, all of them would know what it means though.

Well in the States we say "Whaddup n!gga" so if you visit be sure to say it to be neighborly.
If for some reason they get all upset remind them that they never worked in the RMA department of some unknown Aussie computer store

why say unknown? it\'s as if you\'re trying to say everyone knows american pc stores.. umm ok.
and i\'ll be sure to walk into a nice coon neighbourhood and say Whaddup n!gga..
then i\'ll tell them THX sent me.
u wanna give me your forwarding address?.
-
coon?
i don\'t think a black person has been called a coon since the late 70\'s
-
Um..."coon". WTF? That\'s a bad term to use...so be kind and STFU. Don\'t be a racist fuck. It isn\'t cool.
-
umm Evi, go fuck yourself..
Thx was using a nice little racist comment so i used one just as bad with the same meaning. Noticed you didn\'t pick on him for it though. Saying Nigga ok with you?
-
I did make a comment to THX. I said you\'d get your ass kicked if you said that. At least that\'s what I meant by those three little words.
-
"nigga"?
thought they called them "abbos" in your area, soully
-
coons... or abbos.. i wasn\'t talking about my area though mm.
-
Lol... this thread has certainly gone down the crapper.
So to end it all - go with PCI-E. It\'s the new AGP. You can\'t upgrade to the newest gfx cards with AGP. And if there\'s something wrong with the card... send it back.
