Title: old computer can\'t read data burned onto cd

Here\'s the jist of it.

Ever since I bought my new computer over a year ago, my old one has been sitting in the corner gathering dust.

I thought about it, and decided I might as well put the pile of shite to some use, and so want to use it to store all my old files and work & stuff on, and use it solely for backing stuff up.

Here\'s the problem, when I try to put in past data disks I\'ve burned, to transfer everyting, I keep getting an error message saying that the drive is not accessable, and  isn\'t ready.

To burn files to cd, I use nero.

My old computer is windows 98SE, and only has 1 cd-rom drive.

I also bought a USB flash drive a week or so ago for future transferring, and because it\'s windows 98SE, I need to install the drivers for it. Seeing as there was no driver cd with it, I had to download them from the net.

Now, because I am going to have to burn them to cd to install them, you can see my dilemma.

How do I sort out my problem with the cd-rom drive not recognising the disks I burn?

what brand is your cd-rom drive?  maybe your cd-rom drive is picky at reading poor to mediocre burnt quality disc.

Also what Cd/DVD burner is in your new computer?  If its a good burner, and if you happen to have a media that the burner likes, then the burned quality should be good.

Those are my two guesses.  Other guess may have to do with Windows 98SE isn\'t compatible with newer software?  I don\'t know.

why not just get a network card (or maybe the old comp already has a ethernet port?) and just transfer the files over a cross-over cable.  You don\'t need any router or hub of any kind.

Even better, why not take the Harddrive out of the old computer and stick it in your new one?

yeah,

both jbean and thx gives out better suggestion than mine.

taking out HDD from your older computer and hook it up to your newer computer is probably the fastest way to transfer files.  I done that like several times before but i didn\'t thought about suggesting that method.  I guess I am kind of forgetful.

yeah, just slave that HD and you won\'t have to swap s**t.  I have an old 8 GB HDD slaved in my comp for my backup programs/pictures/mp3s.  And i\'m getting a 160GB SATAII drive on it\'s way from newegg.. then i\'ll turn my 40 Gig HD into a slaved backup drive.

In other words, just slave the drive already ;)
