Updating my pc within the next 2 months. This time a proper update.
Going to get
DFI Lanparty nF4 UT SLi-DR
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Leadtek Winfast 256MB PX7800GT TDH MyVIVO nVIDIA GeForce PCI-Express (yea i know PCI-E bs... but this update has to last me somewhat close to 2 years)
Kingston DDR400 2GB KIT (KVR400X64C3AK2/2G)
or
GeIL DDR400 2GB Kit Value w/Heat Spreader.
I\'ll probably remove the heatspreaders and replace them with heatsinks.
any thoughts?

There ye go ! :D
7800GTX 512mb Ultra article (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27368)
-
wow, soulgrind. You upgrading already? When was the last time you upgrade your computer that you are planning to replace?
I don\'t have much thoughts on upgrade since obviously you are more experience and knowledgeable in this area than I am. But good jobs though.
-
yes, the dude has a decent job :thepimp:
-
fixing busted monitors must really pay off
oh, and hold off till final specs of the 500mb GTX are released
-
If you\'re going to buy an SLI-ready chipset, make sure its one of the new ones with 32 lanes for graphics. Just to be safe.
BTW, there\'s nothing wrong with PCI-Express. All of the "DONTS INVEST IN FIRST GEN PCIE IT SI DANGARUS~!!!!!!!!!" talk is bologna as far as I\'m concerned. My PCI-E mobo and video card (6800GT) have served me very well.
-
great i just ordered the 256 MB ones
:(

u work n RMA do u? it\'s to new, it\'s got problems and i saw lots of them. If he plans on updating his gpu every 6 months.
Sorry Soully but when you contradict yourself that bad in just two weeks it has to be brought back. ;) Glad you\'ve seen the light. My pci-e graphics card runs without a hitch, and it\'s nice knowing the chipset can handle more bandwidth when needed.
Looks like a kickass system. If you\'re planning on overclocking consider DDR500, either from Kingston HyperX or Crucial Ballistix.
-
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Meh...that\'s ok.
-
it\'s a little better than ok
i\'m getting the same processor here in a few weeks.... along with a 7800gt after christmas
-
I\'m getting the 4400 model this month with a 7800GT.
-
4400+ X2? Yow that\'s like a jillion zillion dollars.
What\'s funny is you can buy a 3200+ Venice core for $150 and overclock it to be faster than the 3800+ X2 for gaming, which is over twice as much.

ehh, i build pump control systems not repair pcs. Check my journal.

No Choice, No 7800GTX cards in AGP. Also this update has to last 2 years while i\'m at tafe, start in 3 months. So i had to make sure i built a system that i can upgrade with my tax return next year. Will throw another 7800GTX in.
-
I\'m a bit sceptic about SLi. Consider the extra energy it needs and the overall heat build up. I\'d rather have 1 super vga card.
-
by next year, a single card solution will beat any SLi option today
-
it\'s been that way since forever. that\'s the case with 6800 and 7800 GTX, that\'ll be the case when the next ones come out. does that mean you should never get an sli system today because the ones next year will beat it with just one card?
-
XFX will sell this 580 / 1730 mhz clocked 512mb 7800GTX in about a month :D ;
The cooler is the same dual slot as the QuadroFX4500\'s to keep all that memory cool. The fan is a big low rpm one, so it shouldn\'t be noisy.

no, avatar
it means, it\'s stupid to buy 1/2 a SLi solution now, and say i\'ll just buy a 2nd card a year from now.
if you\'re going SLi, buy both cards now

The 3800 is easily overclocked to match a 4400 X2, but go ahead.... it\'s your money :)
-
speaking of money, it\'s purdy stupid to pay twice as much today for performance you don\'t even need. if next year you find that you need an extra bit of power, plunk down for another card and by that time it\'ll be half the price of what you payed for. you end up with almost 2x performance for 50% more money.
if you absolutley can\'t hack being second fiddle, rip out your old card and replace it with the new model for the same price. you get over 2x performance for 100% more money.
either of these options are better then getting under 2x peformance for 100% more money.
-
exactly, mm is a knob. You don\'t need 2 7800GTX cards, hell 1 is plenty. But in 6 months to a year when i may or may not need another card. I\'ll buy it for less and still keep on top. It\'s retarded to buy 2 7800GTX cards right now when u don\'t need that much power. It\'s a huge wank factor for benchmark whores.
-
Ooo and Souly, nVidia is working on a scheme where you don\'t have to have the exact same card for SLI to work. So you could possibly use your 7800 in tandem with the next one too!
-
they must not teach reading comprehension in oz

welcome to stupid
lol, buy a 2nd card and still be on top
:lmao:
oh, and hold off till final specs of the 500mb GTX are released
-
ehh i understand fully what you\'re talking about. Try learning a little comprehension yourself. It\'s stupid to buy 2 cards now when theres no need. Understand? i\'ll buy another 7800GTX when i need to.
go troll another thread.
-
Man, I haven\'t upgraded since I built my AMD 1.4gHz PC about 4 or 5 years ago.
Been out of the hardware loop for a while.
But...well...considering I play console games and use the Mac for editing stuff, I think I\'ll stay with the 1.4 gHz a bit longer.
-
soully, you\'re missing the point
you\'ll buy a 2nd card for 10% performance and still be 6 months/years behind?
-
no, i\'ll be paying a lot less and getting more performance rather then having to pay for the current highend pricey card.
Why pay 2x as much now when i don\'t need it..
-
hmmm, honestly somehow i agree with Soulgrind\'s reasoning on this one.
-
you end up with almost 2x performance for 50% more money.
That is simply not true at this point in time..
Actually mm said it best, (abit extreme may I add:
You\'ll buy a 2nd card for 10% performance
SLI has yet to prove itself as a doubling performance solution. Sure in certain situations SLi can achieve 70-80%. For the most part SLi economically is a waist of Money, and is really only benificial for the uber geek who wants to run his game at insane resolutions with AF/AA.
IF next gen ATI Crossfire or SLI can offer an 80% perofrmance increase without having the limitation of only being able to acheive this in certain settings, but rather as an overall performer, then and only then would I consider making the leap into purchasing a setup.
I reckon the Advantage to Multi Gpu setups is so that instead of throwing away your previous gen card, you can continue to utilize your invensment by enhancing it\'s performance for half the price of what it would cost for a new State of the Art gen Card.
-
you\'re not going to pick up another 7800GTX in 6 months/year for 50$
it\'s not even a consideration
-
Yep, Last Gen cards go for around 25% less than there original MSRP.
-
hell, you can\'t find an nvidia 5950 ultra for less than 200$ and there 2 generations old

Is it $3 jillion zillion? And what currency is that from?
-
If you\'re buying the CPU part directly from AMD, it\'s going to cost a sh^tload more than buying the part separately. It really isn\'t that expensive.
-
yeah cuz it\'ll end up costing you less per unit, but you have to buy them 1000 peices at a time >_<
-
the new dual-core socket 939 Opterons are really the way to go, better than the X2 processor line, and about 20 bucks cheaper.
The 2MB of L2 cache is a nice upgrade over the X2\'s 1MB as well. And they tend to overclock better as well.
I know what i\'m getting :) Only problem is they are sold-out nearly everywhere. The only places that have them are price-gouging at the moment. :( (opteron 165)
-
Sweet, I\'ve been hearing some great things about them. What technology separates an Athlon X2 from a dual-core Operton? Is it just the L2 cache size?

Well, I\'m also having some plans to get something new too.
It might be a notebook, it might be a desktop.
The budget\'s about 3000 Euros, since my old folks are willing to buy my P3,2 Ghz, that\'s not as steep as it seems....
So, notebook Pentium M780 + 2Gb ram + Go7800GTX for 3000 €
or notebook AMD Turion64 + 1 Gb ram + mediocre X700 for about 1800 €
Or....I could go desktop again and either do a AMD FX57 + 7800GTX or AMD X2 4400 (not really easy to find yet here in NL) + 7800GTX
-
I am here to support SLI. I had my rig set up a week ago with a single 7800 GTX, beatiful GFX and everything. Now, I put the second card in, and what\'s the difference you ask? Graphically, the game looks the same, but the frame rate is great, and it loads a LOT quicker for some reason, plus there is virtually no slow down with the graphic options maxed out. (Game tested was Farcry)
-
If another $500 bucks is worth 20fps, go for it. It\'s a moot point.
SLI is not an feasible for most users. And it really shouldn\'t be. It\'s for the uber-geeks...well, it was. \'Till you came along, you don\'t even know what half of these numbers being mentioned mean and you got SLI...
;)

I\'d get SLi if I could afford it
a 15 month old son and my wife being due in Feb has curtailed any "fun" spending. I\'ll just have to learn to save and wait.
When are you expecting your twins LIC?
