Title: DS.. coming through for the gamer in YOU!
Post by: Blade on November 12, 2005, 12:57:23 PM
I took a quick glance at IGN this morning and noticed that new DS games are just racking up the accolades. Mario Kart DS scored a 9.5 and "best Mario Kart ever" which says a lot.

Sonic Rush (which I thought would be a poor spin-off) ended up with a 9.0 and they called it "possibly the best Sonic game yet" which is also saying a lot.

Nevermind Castlevania:DoS (probably the best 2D CV since SOTN) with its solid showing in October, Viewtiful Joe, and the upcoming M&L:SS2 and Animal Crossing DS which should rock if they\'re anything like their predecessors.

This is only a hint of what\'s coming in the next few months.

PSP had really better watch out. I haven\'t bought a game since Hot Shots Golf, and frankly there probably hasn\'t been a big one besides GTA:LCS since then..

I own neither one of them, but I am actually inclined to buy a Nintendo DS, if nothing else for Castlevania and the first party titles.

I\'d buy it simply for the Castlevania game. I\'ve heard nothing but great things about it. I still play Symphony of the Night. Good times. :)

There\'s a rumour going around that they\'re going to release a less homosexual DS casing. I\'ll be waiting for that before I jump into the wagon.

It\'s also backwards compatible with GBA, so you can play Mother 3 when it comes out.

Always good.

Hmm..in Europe i see PSP outselling DS bigtime.

Euro\'s = Dumb.

;)

No seriously, I can see why people would buy the PSP, it has a ton of gadgets, but as a longterm contender I don\'t think as of right now, it has any ground. A high price tag and lack of games has all but killed the Sony PSP.

Hey their is nothing wrong with French.I know some French people

I think DS is also doing better because its greatly cheaper to develop games for than the PSP

That, and the touch-screen has really shown its worth this year.

It\'s shown a range that extends beyond gimmickry.

Well some games  are using it only as a second screen though.Like the Sonic game.If I am not mistaken it uses it only to show whats underneath the upper screen and sometimes sonic is shown on the lower screen with the upper showing whats above.

Bu it really adds a different experience in many other games

Here in South Africa the PSP is outselling the DS as well, but seeing as I have both I\'m not complaining.

The only thing about the PSP that irritates the crap out of me is the low battery life.  I have bought a add-on attachment which features a pair of handles so that your PSP feels like a normal PS2 controller.  My hands are huge and start cramping when playing PSP... inside those handles is another battery packs which extends the gaming for another 3 hours.

Anyway, the best solution is to get both.

I say get the PS3+PSP and Revolution+DS.  That would be the perfect situation.  Not to fazed about the Xbox 360 as we have to import it here, not distributed locally anywhere in Africa.... another reason why I now hate Microsoft.

I bet after holiday sales soar Nintendo will sell a generation 2 DS that looks cooler & has better features in Feb/March.

Maybe sooner. They\'ve been working on a redesign since the system launched.

They can\'t split the DS\'s user-base by adding better features, but they can make it sleeker as planned.

The PSP is a very neat little gadget, but those sales are helped immensely by the sudden popularity of UMD movies. It sure as hell isn\'t the games moving it.

The fact that PSP sales are due to UMD\'s are pathetic. UMD\'s in general are pathetic. I for one, will never own one. Even if I owned a PSP, I would never buy a UMD.

I call it...DVD

Yeah..

I am not paying $20 bucks for a stripped down DVD. You can blow your money on another Sony format, be my guest. I won\'t have any part of it.
Title: DS.. coming through for the gamer in YOU!
Post by: Paul2 on November 14, 2005, 07:37:25 PM
well, I do agree that I would not support UMD for movies at all although it\'s a good option.  But the price tag is a bit expensive imo.

It would have been better if UMD was designed what it\'s originally intend to which is to play handheld videogames using disc base.

A little off topic but I realize that if UMD is 12 cm, it would have a capacity of around 7.2 Gbytes, which is less than half of HD-DVD which can hold 15 Gbytes, or 3 times less than Blu Ray 25 Gbytes capacity.

One of the most absurd things ever (and I\'m sure it gets worse..) the pilot 2-parter for Lost in UMD format is $15! I bought the whole season on DVD for under $40, and it had extras. Lots of extras. Much better A/V, too.

In general, the PSP ticks me off because it\'s such a cool little toy and developers don\'t seem to care! A lot of the better handheld games into 2006 are hitting the DS..

I didn\'t realize it was the "cool" thing to do , by blowing money on an expensive format that isn\'t that veristile.

UMD = Waste of money.
Have fun wastin\' it.
That\'s all.

waste because you think it is?

not that versatile?
it certainly beats carrying around one of those lame 400$ portable DVD players.

stripped down?  who\'s going to listen to director commentaries on the bus into town?

UMD\'s are a success any way we look at it

To be able to watch a movie and later play Wipeout on the same gizmo is absolutely heaven! How could anyone complain? Well...other than the battery life, I think it\'s awesome.

Now that\'s versatility. I heard you can surf the net wirelessly too! :p

*yawn*

UMD\'s = Waste.

Not goin\' to budge on this. They are just a money pit. If they was cheaper, then maybe, but to pay full price for a stripped down movie is just insane.

As for the PSP and "pure heaven"...Wake me when it gets more than two or three titles out worth ownin\'. Oh and a price drop.

full price?
again, you got a dvd player that can fit in your pocket (not to mention play games and listen to mp3\'s) ?

how did price become a factor anyways?
Title: DS.. coming through for the gamer in YOU!
Post by: Living-In-Clip on November 15, 2005, 11:51:07 AM
Price equals sales.
Price also equals value.

The same price for a DVD with extra\'s, compared to the price of an UMD? The same price. Which offers more value? The DVD. Not to mention the idea of watchin\' movies on that tiny ass screen is insane. Equal that in with battery life and UMD becomes even less "sexy" for the common user.
Title: DS.. coming through for the gamer in YOU!
Post by: mm on November 15, 2005, 12:01:40 PM
if price = sales, then it\'s not too expensive if
they are selling a ton of UMD\'s and even sony was suprised at its success.

remember, sales = king?

tiny ass screen?
have you even touched one?

you are failing to recognize the portability factor.

i didnt realize that normal dvd\'s come in a nice protective shell, and fit nicely in a pocket.

what\'s wrong with the battery life?
no complaints with mine, or are you basing that off what you\'ve read on the intarweb?

i think i know what the problem is, PSP envy

The portability factor is meaningless to some consumers, i.e. me.

I\'ve never watched a movie on the PSP. Even for car rides, I wouldn\'t get through a whole film.

I use my PSP for games and the DS owns it in that department.

I\'ve never played with the memory card or internet functions on the PSP and probably never will. (Unless PS3 tells me to.)

DS = teh win

I love the fact the people like MM now base the greatness of a system on the useless features it has. What happened to the games?

This is a pointless argument. You can defend the UMD format, I can disagree.

Uh? Yes, I\'ve played one.
Envy it? No.
It has NO games I am interested in owning, unlike the Nintendo DS. And guess what? When I buy a game system, I don\'t buy it to watch movie\'s, I buy it to play games.

"all about the games"  is dead

convergence is in
just look at cell phones

i bought my PSP to play games, listen to mp3\'s, and watch movies.  ergo, versatility.

DS = toy
sorry you didn\'t get the memo, pal

I\'m sorry that you have lost the focus of gaming - and that is the games. I could care less about this "convergence". If I pay for a system to play games, I want solid games that interest me and right now, the PSP does not offer that.

I don\'t need something to play games, listen to mp3\'s and movie\'s. Just like I don\'t need to own a movie on UMD and DVD. I just don\'t see the point in it. When I get a handheld system, I want solid games to keep me interested.

beacuse you just flat out hate the PSP and refuse to acknowledge an ounce of success or are just being finicky?

there\'s plenty of games out there, you just refuse to notice.

what movie do you feel the need to own on dvd?  you keep mention usefullness and money pit, but  what do you think the DVD format is?

DVD will be the vinyl of tomorrow in case you aren\'t watching.

*looks at list of PSP.IGN.COM*

Right...There is that ONE GAME.
Darkstalkers...

All I see is PSone /Ps2 ports of games I didn\'t care for to begin with, like GTA.

Lookin\' at the DS, I see quality Nintendo first party titles, not to mention a strong third party title like Castlevania.

I love how one person\'s taste now just becomes a refusal to acknowledge success. It can\'t just be the fact that the games don\'t appeal to that person.

As for DVD and vinyl. Well, guess what? I have no interest in investing in the next format, so DVD\'s are just fine for me. Not to mention I can sit and enjoy my DVD;s in the case, with extra features. I have no desire to watch a UMD movie on the go -  it doesn\'t fit into my lifestyle and most likely never will. So why would I even bother with the UMD format?

you mean 99% of DS games aren\'t nintendo ports/rehashes?

you will invest in the next format.
think they will keep making films on DVD forever?  you\'re about to have twins, yeah, you\'ll be re-buying some films there buddy.  :)

extra features you view one time and most people never both with?

you don\'t have to bother with the UMD format, a hell of alot of other people already are.

I won\'t invest in the next format. Maybe the format after that - but I won\'t otherwise.
You are right tho\', some DVD\'s are goin\' to be trashed in the lifespan of twins..

/hides his treasured DVD\'s to never be seen again /

If people want to invest in UMD, that is fine. I just don\'t have a desire to it. I would never use any of those "features".

As for the ports / rehashes. I never said the DS didn\'t have ports. I said that the games on the DS appealed to me and the PSP didn\'t. To me, it reminds me of the Gameboy VS Gamegear days. One appealed to some folks, the other appealed to others.

I have a PSP. I liked Lumines, I played Need for Speed and I was tempted to grab Hot Shots Golf and GTA.

It has worthwhile software.

But DS has more - and more unique stuff. Feel the Magic, Kirby\'s Canvas Curse, Metroid Pinball, Warioware Touched, Sonic Rush, Phoenix Wright, Castlevania DS, Mario Kart DS. There\'s the upcoming wifi Animal Crossing. Sega\'s got Rub Rabbits and Monkey Ball on the way.

Pac Pix looked different. Yoshi\'s Touch & Go was good until Kirby bested it. I\'ve heard good things about Meteos. Lost in Blue looked unique.

And even though I hated them, some people dug Nintendogs and the Mario 64 rehash with mini-games.

Because every game is a potentially new experience, I find myself trying different things on the DS whenever I can.

The PSP was a fun toy for a while, I showed it off, and now it sits in a drawer, permanently charging. And unless Santa is bringing GTA down from the north pole, my PSP is (unfortunately) staying put.

The PSP blew me away at first, but the steady stream of cool games for the Nintendo DS keeps it out front, in my opinion.

Heh, that was mean. You almost made me choke on my Sausage McMuffin.

PSP has a good library of games given its age, but its time has yet to come. It\'s going through the same drought DS was going through before Meteos and Kirby came out. Once the price drops and more games come out, it\'ll be worth buying.

Right now, it\'s got maybe.. 5-10 games worth owning and at least half of them are not as good as their PS2 counterparts. Where as.. Nintendo has improved upon their sequels/ports. Sometimes dramatically. (MK:DS)

I consider that a truism, myself.

The GBA-SP is still the best iteration of the GBA, especially since they upgraded the light. It\'s still cheaper than the Micro, it plays 99.9% of all GB games ever made (GB/GBC/GBA) ... it supports the E-Reader... and the screen is larger.

Micro\'s is supposedly sharper, but who cares? Its size is frankly all it has going for it, now.

900,000 sold in Nov. And the GBA is the cheapest to produce. And then another 300,000 DS\'s. This is how the handheld market keeps Nintendo in the black.

Think about it. GameCube who?

GameCube is a disaster area until Zelda comes out and then that\'s it.

In the mean time, Nintendo keeps on making a fortune with its handheld systems.

Well, GameCube isn\'t the failure that some people make it out to be.

I saw a guy buying one at EB Games last week while I was there. I know.. stupid argument.. but since I attended the launch, it was the first time I saw somebody purchase the system at a store.

Yes, it\'s getting beaten by PS2 and Xbox.. but it\'s not dead to consumers by any means. NPD stats anyone?

Edit: Got your November numbers right here for North America..

Game Boy Advance 892,438
GameCube 278,284
Nintendo DS 381,619
PlayStation 2 546,096
PlayStation Portable 359,772
Xbox 191,320
Xbox 360 332,121

I was surprised too. I had heard that DS outsold PSP, but GCN over Xbox by a good margin was not expected. Yeaaaaah.. the 360 obviously stole some sales from the original Xbox.. but it\'s also in a different segment at this time.

The Xbox is.. what.. $129? $149? Less than half the price of the less popular 360 Core system.
