Title: The local XBOX360 "sellout" on day one...
Post by: FatalXception on November 22, 2005, 02:56:37 AM
Well, I can\'t speak for other locations, but my original plan to buy one or two 360s this morning didn\'t work out.

Having done my research yesterday, I knew that the local (non pre-order) stores were getting the following (quotes are when they were non specific in their answer):

Zellers - 35 units.
Walmart - "more than 100" units.
Bestbuy - 120 units. "more on the way"
Futureshop1 - 30-50 units (near the bestbuy)
Futureshop2 - 40-50 units (near the walmart) "more coming every day"

The local \'pre-sale\' stores, like EB were of course sold out, but my local EB said they were getting only a couple dozen in, which I found strange.  Seems like the dedicated gamer stores with preorders are getting in much less than their demand.

When I went out this morning at 0430 AM, planning to line up and get a couple of boxes for flipping on Ebay, I was really underwhelmed at the demand.  The only one with a long line was Bestbuy, which I rough-counted at about 60 people.  5 and 7 in front of the futureshops, 4 in front of the walmart, and 0 around the zellers.  Seeing the lack of demand, I decided not to buy any 360s to flip.  While I\'m sure it\'ll sell out tomorow, compared to the PS2 experience the demand really doesn\'t compare.  Looks like people will be able to buy one without even lining up when the stores open in a couple of hours.

*EDIT*

Article (http://wham.canoe.ca/360/2005/11/21/1316966.html)
Looks like the pre-order sales were great, but the day-of sales have been a bust, depending on locale.

I have to say the launch games are very good.Games like kameo, PGR3 and PDZ got nice reviews.
Unfortunately though these games are probably the only ones that seem a bit next gen. There isnt anything truelly mindblowing.
When PS2 game out I remember how impressed I was by RRV\'s intro, or how superb TTT and SSX looked.
I was especially blown away by TTT\'s graphics. There wasnt anything like it before on any platform graphically.
So far XBOX360 didnt cause the impact usually a next gen launch causes, and games technically show more of the same.Games like HL2, Far Cry and Doom3 arent miles away from what the XBOX360 has shown so far.
I hope PS3 wont be the same case.I cross my fingers that AI and physics will be rear the quality shown at the concept videos at E3 because these are what made the PS3 look next gen at the Sony conference. Not just high res graphics.
So far the only console promising a different and more interesting experience is the Revolution.

I was just coming here to talk about the ebay prices.

I\'m gonna see if I can get another one. I might just sell the one I\'m buying today and pick up another one later.

Prices have fallen to about 2 grand apiece right now.

If they settle anywhere near the $1,000 range, I\'ll still consider it.

PC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>any console.

of course the problem is updating every 4 years to keep up with the games coming out, but nothings perfect.

if you look at the next gen as a top of the line computer (if not a little better) itll only get \'outdated\' in 3 years..only difference is you dont have anything to add-on to it like you do with PC. Instead you wait 6 years for the next next generation.

kinda depends on the game for me though.

sports games:
console >> PC cuz of controls

first person shooters:
PC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.console..thats my reasoning.

I was tempted to get a buddy of mine who is the stock manager at my local Target to buy one for me so I could flip it on ebay.  I was just worried that they wouldn\'t be fetching what I had hoped.

Oh well, i\'ll definately do it with the ps3 :)

Jbean, I\'m planning on doing the same with PS3 depending on a) the cost of the system (don\'t have much money) b) the hype and c) if they are only releasing a small amount. Then I\'m gonna keep one and sell the rest  Not a shabby plan. If its like the PS2 launch, I\'ll have made a couple hundred dollars.

The thing to remember about ebay is that the console sales really bring out the nasties.

For the PS2 launch, I remember that I had a lot of grief selling my second one:

1) Lots of people bid on 5-10 of the item, and then only pay for the one they got "cheapest", leaving my first acution with a NON PAYING BIDDER.

2) Relist - ok, monitoring my bidders, making sure that they bid on only mine.  Guy who won mine won two others, but paid right away (and waaay over market, at like 1.2G US).  Ok, sounds good.  Got a phonecall from paypal like 3 hours later, just before I sent out the package that he had used fraudulent CCs, and not to ship - scammer (I got lucky).

3) Finally sold my PS2 at a respectible 150% of MSRP to some family man wanting one for XMAS, so it was a lot of work/risk.

That\'s why I didn\'t do it this time.  Quite frankly, any time you see a 360 on ebay going for more than 1G, you can count of the fact that it isn\'t going to sell.  In that 5G one above, the bidder is a new account just created, with no feedback, so either a non-pay or a scammer.  It\'s the risk you take for selling a high demand item on ebay.  Unfortunatly lots of times those guys bidding on 15 of em for the \'cheap one\' bid like 2G knowing they won\'t be paying if it actually gets that high.  You will be able to flip a 360 premium for about double what you paid, but there will be a significant chance of scammer, reverse chargers, and non paying bidders.  Keep in mind, that the way paypal handles a fraudulent CC charge is to take the money back, even though you sent the item.

*edit* just for curiosity\'s sake, I\'m going to drive by and see what time walmart (or if) sold out today.

**EDIT**
Walmart sold out today at around 6 PM, so people were walking in all day to get a box.  All the other stores are sold out, with one future saying if I came around 10 am tomorow, they were expecting more.  Zellers still had a half dozen at around 6 PM.

If you\'re not impressed by how 360 looks you haven\'t seen the games on an hd tv.  In store demos really aren\'t doing the graphics justice.  As for watching Condemned today, it seemed fun but I don\'t know if it\'s worth a purchse.

Not everyone owns an HDTV and higher resolution isnt the only thing we should expect to be greatly improved.

The well put together games look A LOT better than this generation.  Playing FEAR on a top end pc and playing condemned just now on a non hd tv I think they look about even which says a lot for the first gen of 360 games.

And you\'re right, not everyone owns an HD tv but thats the route things are going so it\'s worth mentioning.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8236375532&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

I\'m estimating that there are about 29,000 + Xbox 360\'s for sale on ebay

Prices seem to be hitting the $800 - $950 mark and more with games, periphials and shippig deals.

I played some Perfect Dark on a standard def. 19" tv yesterday. I\'ll probably hook it up to the 56" HDTV tonight.

But so far, it just seemed like a regular Xbox game.

And I realized Nintendo is right. Pretty graphics are stupid. I want good, innovative games.

But I\'m hopeful that PD0 and Kameo are too good games. And I do quite want King Kong and to a lesser extent, Condemned.

Well, that kind of makes sense as they\'re positioning it more like spy games like Syphon Filter and the old GoldenEye.

It shouldn\'t be a speedy pure fps anyway.

YEAH !

I\'m very happy with the outcome.

I figured after all my expenses, My Xbox 360 Premium, extra wireless controller, Call of Duty 2, PGR 3. Cost me $270 after the ebay sale.

The buyer had the money in my PayPal account within 10 minutes of the end of auction. Of course when you run across an ebay user, named "christianboy" , and has 149 positive feedback at 100% its hard to think your are going to be taken for a ride.

The unit has shipped. USPS Express to Texas

The morale of the story is .... PRE-ORDER. You can always say no later on.

ddaryl, over 100% back in profit, that kicks ass!

I sold my PS2 on ebay near xmas and only got a paltry $450 (or maybe it was 550 I don\'t remember) :D  but I also had 0 feedback so it wasn\'t too bad.

Yeah, the Xbox 360 really doesn\'t scream innovation at this time and that\'s frankly the only thing that\'s going to hurt it.

Pretty much everything on it is a past-gen game with better graphics and the obvious gameplay improvements, with a few exceptions.

Normally, this would be prudent.. but with all of the promises from Nintendo and Sony\'s camps.. it\'s hard to get excited by a high-end PC in a silver box with a barely-altered controller. Although, if it ain\'t broke.. don\'t fix it.. and the Controller S was awesome..

Blah, I\'m bipolar over this system. In a nutshell, I think MS should rethink their philosophy a little.

Keep doing what they\'re doing, but cater more to the weird and the wacky as well. I get that feeling of "corporate" whenever I see the Xbox 360..

It really felt like all this console had to offer was good graphics and hopefully some fun titles with Rare, Condemned, King Kong, etc.

But just to throw it out there, the Xbox Live interface is way improved, and it was by far the best even before.

It\'s nice to be hooked up with Live and an HDTV. I\'m glad I forked over the cash.

For several thousand dollars and a bunch of set up aggravation, I can finally play a pretty co-op shooting game with a stranger.

Score.

..

Right?

Seriously, it\'s cool, heh.

I haven\'t even played my Xbox 360 yet. Waiting on my TV to be delivered.

I played for a few minutes using the composite cable option but not enough to really form an opinion.

But my initial opinion is that Xbox 360 will end up being referred to as XBox 1.5

X360 factually has more and stronger Japanese developer support. A substantial difference compared to Xbox 1, imo.

MS is just really really early launching the console. That\'s why it seems like mediocre at this moment.

In a way.. it might become \'DC\'s successor\'. Who knows....
