Xbox 360 Crashing Like Mad?
>> Jsgongwon, one of our forum members, reported that his newly bought Xbox 360 keeps crashing while playing Project Gotham Racing 3 in single player mode.
He\'s playing with the default settings, and apparently his Xbox crashes even before the end of the first lap. Crashes on Xbox Live and on startup occur too. He included screenshots of the crashed Xbox 360 (see below - more pictures on flickr.com) and a video of the crash here(9MB) (mirror: here(2MB XviD))
A quick look on our forums (more and more) seems to indicate he\'s not the only one. Several of our members seems to get crashing 360s. It doesn\'t seem to be related to a specific game, as we get reports of the Xbox 360 crashing with several games. And it\'s not all the same Error-number either (E79, E74, E64, real crashes, ...).
I quickly checked over at TeamXbox and they also have a large thread and poll about defective Xbox 360s.
It\'s a bit early to guess what\'s exactly going on here (software, hardware, heat problem, \'user errors\', ...) or how big the issue really is. We\'ll report back when we have more. If you have issues with your Xbox 360 too, report it!
From Xboxscene.

hahaha that reminds me a lot of Daily Radar.Remember the guys crashing PS2s while people were demanding it like crazy and couldnt get one?
MS IS USING WINDOWS 98 IN XBOX360!!
Does it also show the blue screen of death? :D

Well, I always find console busting absolutely ridiculous.
Earth\'s resources, energy and time put to waste.
Now, I know... some might argue that in itself the Xbox360, is just a waste of resources ; but I\'m sure it would have made some other gamers happy.
-
XBOX360 wont end up like the DC.It might end up as something worse. No much fuzz about it(I mean a long time ago a new launch made people crazy. Now its almost as if the console isnt even released), defected units, and games that look like enhanced XBOX1 games on standard TVs.
-
I peaked around some gamefaq forums and noticed a few Perfect Dark players also have faulty systems. They\'re already telling each other "you have to turn the system upside down."
Can you imagine paying $500 for what\'s essentially a non-functioning hardware upgrade?
It\'s really pathetic. I hope mine doesn\'t crash out.
The guy at the store tried to sell me the warranty plan and of course I said no.
I go "I trust Microsoft." And he looked at me, heh. I\'m like "All right that\'s not true, but I gave you enough money."

What are you talking about??? It\'s on the news constantly and every store in my area had 50-100 people camping outside of it to get one but thats "no much fuzz" (english?)
It\'s not surprising though that theirs been errors happening. All my friend\'s xboxs are working great but with how much they rushed the launch it\'s to be expected (though it should never be).
-
why do you think MS created this "lack of supply"?
to barely be above the "lack of demand".
-
Cause of lack of demand or to hype it more? Their was plenty of demand they just pulled what sony did to make it the hot item.

I\'m sure thats a huge coincidence.

it\'s not x360. It\'s gaming in general. I put down my ps2 and xbox a long time ago and did not miss a thing. All you get from gen to gen is the same games with better graphics.
Unless your are one of these stupid fanboys thats kiss the ass of a certain brand of console like it is god. Console gaming has become boring. No new games. Just the same old fluff.
I bet there are people who can\'t wait for the same old gta,ff,Mgs,Halo.ect..... I do remember when people went crazy over the launch of a console. Ps2 had that kind of buzz. But I don\'t see ps3 coming anywhere close to having the amount of buzz that ps2 had.
-
coincidence?
http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/misc/other/xb360pr/
We wanted to explore the unit in a lot more detail today, but we\'re jumping straight to the conclusion since the unit we purchased was DOA. Everything looked ok, no dents, nicks, security sealed box, but within 5 minutes of powering the system on, there was a faint electrical burning odour. Now, at first we thought it was coming from our PC which we were going to use for screen grabs (wouldn\'t be the first time), but moving it to our TV still displayed a black screen. Putting the old nose to the unit test revealed that yes, something cooked inside the 360.
:rofl::rofl:
-
^^
Ok if you really think so....
I think both Nintendo and Sony are going to have huge audience anticipation, whatever the marketing campaign.
Pc gamers will have to pay a very hefty price to play those \'innovative\' fps games at eyecandy settings.
edit - that defect sounds like a powerproblem, not the X360 hardware (cpu, gpu, etc). It might be the risk which those devkits had as well with their powerbricks.
-
lol, I believe some have gone bad but it\'s just funny that the 4 friends of mine that bought one all have had 0 problems yet probably every last person you\'ll ever talk to will have a broken one. And I\'d think more people would be used to stuff like this by now with all the problems the ps2 had.
-
Ouch. They need to fix this problem ASAP. I\'m glad I cancelled my pre-order. I\'ve decided not to buy the first batch of consoles anymore.
-
Do they have serial/version numbers like PS2\'s ?
-
boz, check any media outlet
it\'s a widespread problem, can\'t sugarcoat it. 360 got rushed and now it\'s rearing its ugly head
-
From their poll:
it works just fine 238 85.92%
it\'s defective 39 14.08%

You mean just in the US?
I ve also heard that there are stores with few XBOX360\'s sitting on shelves.
And the stores that are sold out only had few shipped at them.
Also about MS doing the same thing with 360 just like Sony did with the PS2 to increase hype is kind of false.Thats just speculation. It mostly makes the same people that wanted the console from the beginning more impatient.
From a business standpoint it has to do more with cost minimization.
-
I\'m def not a hater or biased gamer but for some reason all the people foaming at the mouth and waiting in the cold to play Kameo only to receive a BSOD cracks me up
HOOORAAAAYYYYYY!!!!

More console horsepower = newer innovations in gameplay (well, at least the possibility anyway). Obviously there\'s going to be many regurgitated storylines, gameplay, etc., but new technology gives developers more possibilities to expand on with their imagination. I haven\'t really played games that much this year. I\'m not into as much as I used to be. Hopefully something will spark my interest again this coming generation.
-

no, it\'s common sense
they knew the demand wasn\'t there, so they had to create it artificially.

lol, what a way to make a profit!
-
The only new system that hasn\'t had a massive problem in awhile has been the Nintendo Gamecube. With the PS2\'s it was the drives, same problem with the Xbox. Now the 360 looks to have a power supply problem. While I\'m not a fanboy, it seems to me, the only company that truly knows how to build a solid system would be Nintendo. I have NEVER had a problem with a Nintendo console (well, \'cept the original NES design). I remember my Super NES actually got left on a furnance and melted most of it and it STILL worked. HA! Take that new consoles.
P.S - Techincal problems is the price you pay for being an early adopter!

sony did it too with the PS2 yet I never heard you laugh that up
It\'s just a business tactic
And LIC has it right, don\'t know why it has to be this way but a lot of early systems are built poorly. mm, I never denied the problem I just don\'t know if it\'s as bad as some try to make it.
-
Kids used to leave their Game Boy systems out in the snow for the winter, find it in the spring and it\'d turn on.
And I\'m at ease. I just played PD0 and Kameo (which so far, I like less) for probably 3 hours and there was no problem.
I hooked up Live, too. It\'s cool, it stays connected all the time and tells you when anyone on your list signs on. You can send and receive voice mail and text msgs too.
I hope Tetris works on it, but maybe I can find someone to play PD0 co-op with...
Neat.
Downloaded a funny Xbox trailer for free on marketplace, too.

well, it was expected there\'s always problems with the first gen.
I but I\'ve been lucky, first gen playstation and first gen ps2 both still going strong. Hell my dog peed in my ps2 and it\'s still working.
-
No, that was me. I just blamed the dog.
I was completely prepared to buy an Xbox this week, but all this has made me back away.
-
So this is really an anticipated system, not just a small amount of hardcore gamers making the small supply seem like a success?

wrong again, boz
the demand for PS2\'s was phenominal
the 360 couldnt dream of that user base
there\'s well over 90 million PS2\'s sold
how you think the demand for PS3 is?
it kills me how you guys are so accepting of problems with new consoles.
are you buying them with your own money?
comparing xbox 360 hardware problems to what happened 4 years ago or longer is laughable, and a pathetic excuse
-

Yes, I buy them with my own money.
And comparin\' the problems with the 360 and problems four years ago is the POINT. The fact that they didn\'t learn from the problems from the past is a sad thing. I\'m willin\' to bet Sony didn\'t learn either once the PS3 launch happens. Both companeis know they can sell this stuff to the mass public and it doesn\'t have to work a 100 percent. Pathetic.
-
I think Sony is waiting to see what MS is doing. Maybe it\'s a good thing that they\'re waiting a while to release the PS3, so they don\'t fook anything up. I hope the launch titles for the PS3 will hold my attention for a while.
And I\'m finally getting a 56-60 inch HDTV for the first fooking time. It should be put to good use with this upcoming generation.

Who said I ever accepted? I didn\'t go out and buy one right now and thats one of the many reasons for it. I\'m just not against the console because it doesn\'t have Sony written across it.
And I still think Sony built the hype of the launch with the high demand tactic cause god knows the launch titles were terrible.
-
Yea, dog the MS hype-fest all you want but I seriously doubt anyone can outdo Kutargi\'s comment how the PS2 can render Toy Story level graphics in real time. That\'s great news, looks like all the games are only using 5% of the PS2\'s power.

i don\'t understand the problem? It\'s normal for ms.

That is false common sense. It doesnt make people that didnt want the console to want it later. It mostly makes the same people that wanted the console in the first place to want it more.
lol, what a way to make a profit!

There is no profit maximisation if there is no cost minimisation.

Say what you will, it wasn\'t meant to be an insult as much as just common sense. And I haven\'t tried to debate any qualities of the console to you cause all it is to you is sales. Oh oh Sony sold this much I must be right.
-
MM if you expect ps3 to have no problems when it launches you are a blind fanboy. The ps1 had problems. So did ps2 and if you think things will change with 3 your lost.
There is going to be some problems with the first batch of consoles. There shouldn\'t be I agree. And it sucks to spend all this money to have the BSOD. We as consumers need to start holding these gaming console responsible.
-
So do too and if you think things will change with 3 your lost.
please someone, translate this
it makes my head hurt
oh, and sales still = king
-
Sales is king to the company but I have plenty of fun worrying less about that and playing the games instead.
As for not buying consoles at launch, I definitely agree. You\'re just asking for trouble. I\'m wondering how bad the 360 problem really is, cause if it is that bad then this rush makes them look stupid.

XP Pro, and Windows 2000 have been pretty stable operating systems. The ratio of Blue Screens, system hangups, and other such nuiances compared to the Windows 95, and 98 OS\'s would reveal an improved product.
Most crashes can be attributed to people not knowing what the fuck they are doing. I see all kinds of dumbass computing habits from my fellow co-workers.
I agree that MS did rush the console, and there is going to be problems.
IMO, MS knows it has no shot at beating Sony head to head. MS wanted nothing more but to create a 2 year seperation from Sony and have a significantly more powerful console on the market in that time frame. This gives MS a better chance of gaining some market share. However, MS knows many of its best customers are gamers who are going to run to the PS3 when it launches or soon after. All MS is doing now is crossing its fingers and hoping Sony decides to sit back on the success of the PS2 till 2007 before it enter the race.
That\'s what I would like to see, a bigger gap between the 2 consoles. Instead of having 2, almost equally powerful machines launched 1 year apart, I would like to see a new machine every 2 to 3 .5 years. I think MS wants this to since it will allow them to gain a foothold. Sony might not mind since they can make quite a bit of money on the PS2 throughout next year, while improving and stablizing the pS3 as well as having more time to produce a killer launch with a boat load of AAA titles.
-
2007 sounds like a nice time for PS3, but do you think hardcore videogame consumers will be that patients? Spring 2006 is a little early too imo. Would be cool if PS3 is release in summer of 2006 in Japan and Fall/Winter in North America and other countries.
-
Regarding glitches, I tried swapping games while the system was on and it told me Kameo was from another territory. Essentially, a fancy disc read error. Reset (rebooted) the system and it worked ok.
Only happened once so far. Ticked me off though.

Everyone seems to make fun of the external powersupply, but I think it\'s one of the best features of the 360. Keep all that heat, and interference away from the more sensitive electronics, and on the floor, behind the home theatre where nobody will see it. Imagine how much bigger the 360 would be with an integrated PS? ugh.
I hope the PS3 goes that route.
-
I think the word "owned" comes to mind about the 360 crashing.
I would actually perfer to have the powersupply inside the console. If the PS3 had it I wuold be pissed. I\'d have to find a place to stick the damn power supply when I set the console up ina dorm room where I have no room to begin with. I\'d rather have it inside with a fan to cool it and I don\'t have to worry about where to but the damn thing.

If sony launched the ps3 in 2007 they would kill MS anyways. I think they would just play up the more powerful console angle. And people would just wait on ps3. Because they would know it would be more powerful than 360. If ps3 launched in march 06 the graphical gap is basicly none. I would like to see that happen.
Just so I could get and even more powerful ps3.

It just provides better design and layout of the internal hardware. Only ppl who live in a cardboard box won\'t have enough space to place a powerbrick.

Didn\'t the GameCube use an external power supply? It had to, to retain that size!
-
See, both the Cube and PStwo use modest powerbricks which benefits the
console\'s form factor.
Big Xbox1 uses a powerbrick despite it\'s own bulky size. I bet both Nintendo and Sony can learn a lesson from all this and have some flawless powerbrick solution for their new consoles.
-

Yeah but both the console and the external power supply were smaller
-
if a powerbrick has a fan, you know they fucked up somewhere in the design phase
and if the power supply is bigger than a PC\'s....
-
Fact is, only these devices need a separate power brick so I\'m not worried about "too many".
TV\'s - will always have self contained power supply units, since they generate plenty of heat anyways, and are large enough to acomodate them. DVD/CD/Media players will always have them integrated because these are low-power units. Amps and preamps are big-draw, but then again the whole point of these units is to amp the power so again, they integrate.
Really, it\'s only gaming systems that will have to have separate power supplies, and that\'s because they are the same as a dedicated PC - but smaller, running in a confined space for long periods of time. Makes sense for these units to have a power brick separate. For me, the very bottom of my electronics \'rack\' to the right of my TV is where all transformers/adapters/power units go, so you don\'t see them unless you go looking. With a few minutes any decent setup can hide it\'s wires/cords from most viewing angles.
-
^Agreed.
Look at modern case designs from Dell, Antec, Apple etc.
They all create these seperate compartments for the hefty PSU. They use special isolation materials to minimize heat and electrical influence of the PSU on the rest of the hardware.
I don\'t even find my PStwo\'s powerbrick ugly, so i don\'t even really hide it from sight.

From a gamers point of view, that article is dead nuts.
MS is really fucking the dog, when they should at least be trying to seduce gamer\'s first. MS has bypassed all four-play and pretty much viscioulsy inserted the Xbox 360 in gamers buttocks\'s.
I love new technology, and I\'m glad to have one, but MS has offically made Sony look much more competent about console launches. MS had the chance to show Sony how it should be done and leave a very positive vibe among gamers, but they did just the opposite. More people are now looking forwards to the PS3 even more and MS has some damage control to do.

Bah, I\'ve easily spent way more time and have had more fun with GT4 than I did with the entire 8bit generation. I expect to do the same when GT5 comes out.
And yes, MS has screwed up worse this round than Sony could ever of dared hope they would
:lmao:
-
Honestly, the PS2 shortage was actually real. Whereas the 360 "shortage" is conjured up which many people sorta knew about anyway.
Perhaps Sony had the right plan to let their PS2 take on the more powerful 360 while they patiently fine tune the PS3, let the developers have more time to develop better tools for game makers and such.
This 360 eerily reminds me of Sega Saturn being launched just soon after the Sega CD and Sega 32x consoles. They wanted to get that head start ahead of the PSX.

Not saying the Xbox 360 isn\'t a flop - but those polls are pointless. Most the time it is the same ole\' people or not even accurate. How many people say NEVER and buy one within a week?
-
Either way, the Xbox360 launch was a complete fiasco. They made up a "shortage" which by now they have probably built more than enough to meet the demand, they are already falling apart not even a week later. Atleast the PS2 disk read errors came months or years later. Either way, Sony was really smart about delaying their console. Now there will probably be more hype for it than there was for PS2 or more than Sony was expecting.

I\'m camping out at Target tomorrow for the PS3.

Woah i thought that was a Power Generator at first!
-
So sony officially announced that they are delaying the ps3 til 2007?
If that does happen there is no excuse why ps3 should not have a great launch. But I doubt they will wait until 2007

Um...no.
-
I thought it was a given that the US won\'t get the PS3 until \'07. Unless....they\'re delaying the Japanese launch into \'07.
-
I don\'t think they\'ll delay the Japanese launch until 2007. That would suck.
-
Its probably done. They just need to do some final tests, tweaks and build up the hype. That\'s my two cents anyway.
-
PS3 will be released in teh US probably towards late fall early winter 06. Sony should announce something in early spring I would think?

Sony is hosting the PlayStation Conference in February, I bet pricing, launch dates and release games will be announced then.
I suspect the PS3 release dates in the different regions will be much closer compared to the PS2 dates (JAP March, US October, EU November). Sony’s semiconductors production capacity is much greater now compared to the early days of the PS2. Sony has built at least one new plant, and they have deals with IBM and Toshiba to fab processors at their plants.
So I speculate the Japanese and US releases might be much closer to each other than what one would expect looking back at the PS2 release. Of course Europe gets shafted as usual so this doesn’t benefit me. UNLESS the PS3 is region free so I can import one from Canada. ;)
Btw, according to an old interview with Mr. Chatani, the PS3 will have an internal powersupply.
-
I\'m not sure where all these release date rumors start... but here\'s the speculation:
In spring of 2005 the Sony PS3 preview trailers ended with "lauching spring 2006". No word on regions, or exactly what spring is.
March 2006 is a good bet for that, and most people are guessing that it will be initially a Japanese launch, but it *could* be a worldwide launch. Assuming a simmilar timeframe to the PS2 (launched Japan march 2000, NA October 2000, Europe November 24, 2000), we will probably see the PS3 in North America and Europe before christmas.
No other definitive dates have been forthcoming from Sony or their trailers. Sony mentioned the other day they were buying the central stand (normal) at Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in January 2006 (what\'s unusual? The platforum will have 12,000 sq. feet - aprox 3660 square meters).... so expect big news there.
No firm estimates for price are out there. The amounts CNN reported last week of 300-400 US as said by Sony\'s CEO (saying they would sell it at a loss if necessary to ensure Blu-ray market penetration) turned out to be a false rumor, but guesses are that they will aim for the same price point as the XboX, even if it is a loss at that price.

I like the internal power supply strategy, its a hassle to set up with too many peripherals if you keep travelling with your system .
Compact is the word.

I disagree.
I\'d rather Sony take their time, and add the pieces to the console that truly make it a 2nd to none next gen console. Having a new console to purchase every 2 1/2 - 3 years is better then having 2 consoles launched a year apart with similiar specs. IMO that\'s a waste.
If Sony waits till 2007 they can have a tremendous amounts of AAA launch title ready, and have more then enough hardware to meet demand. Not to mention the upgrades and stability they can design into the PS3 in the extra time. Meanwhile from now until 2007 games like Halo 2 and Eleder Scrolls among others will have Xbox 360 in its prime.
But of course that won\'t happen, becuase that would be to conveinient for gamers.

And right there is the safest of all bets. Sony will release the PS3 around thanksgiving, in time for the holiday shoppin\' spree. They will not miss the \'06 holiday season.
-
^^^
Makes the most sense.
And also explains why gamers had to suffer through an under-supplied 360 launch. Microsoft scurried to make holiday sales.

Why indeed...
Go\'s back to the PC and PSP :D
p.s.
PM me if you want in on COH/COV
-
CoH is broken. Has been since shortly after launch and CoV is a cheap attempt to bring some people back.

Poll taken over at joysiq - surprising results, with the revolution hopefulls beating out PS3 hopefulls. Of those who responded, a full 33% own a 360, and of those a FULL 23% have a major technical problem, ie overheating, DOA, scratched disks. (1518 total, 355 bad).

POLLS ARE POINTLESS NO MATTER WHAT.
PEOPLE CAN LIE ON THEM.
END OF STORY!
-
THIS JUST IN! POLLS SAY LIVING-IN-CLIP HAS A SMALL PENIS!
-
THEY ARE THAT ALSO.
NOT WELL ENDOWED AND POINTLESS.
POLLS LIE!
-
Polls don\'t lie. They\'re just grossly inaccurate.
-
Some would consider that a lie.
