Title: We\'ve been overpaying for ram
Post by: THX on December 03, 2005, 08:57:15 AM
A little drama in the PC world:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051201/ap_on_bi_ge/samsung_price_fixing

Cliffs: When RAMBUS made an appearance several years ago, the DDR chip makers formed an alliance to fix prices to drive them out of the market.  When RAMBUS went off the map, the alliance slowly upped the price of ram to where it is today, nearly quadrupling the cost.

If you think about it, with all the insane demand for system ram nowadays why does it still cost so much to get 2 gigs?  Pretty neat read.

wow,

is RAMBUS better than DDR?

Good things these people get caught and penalize for ripping people off with high price DRAM chips and have to pay several hundred million dollars for it and 5 years royalties.

Its just that I don\'t understand why they have to be too greedy for it?  Either way they are still making money.  I can understand why poor people would do something like this, even though it\'s wrong and deserve to get penalize too if they get caught.

But I am still not why sure rich company would do something like this?  Either way, they are still rich and making profit.  Why greed out more?

Well.... Rambus is gonna make it\'s comeback with their XDRAM in PS3.

Maybe that\'s why ppl overestimate PS3\'s production costs, becuz they based their estimation on DDR prices. lol.

i didn\'t say it\'s impossible.  I am just saying why not do it the right way.  Like the legitimate honest way.  Why try to rip people off by selling it more expensive than it should be?  Since selling either way, you still make profits.  So why bother to greed for more money when these companies are rich already.  It\'s not like they are losing money selling them at the suggested price...
