Hi there !
You guys know I was about to buy new pc hardware. OK so I placed (altered) orders for all except the monitor.
I\'ve always had a beautiful 19" CRT but with the new rig I\'m ready to go TFT. 17" or 19". Since I\'m TFT n00b I was digging up info and came across this article which is quite unsettling :
LG TFT questionable practices IMO (http://www.behardware.com/articles/598-1/20-inches-lcd-p-mva-vs-s-ips.html)
Basically they\'re gonna sell IPS panel TFT\'s but the preview models have superior P-MVA panels only becuz the required IPS panels for that particular model are not yet ready ?
Now I know there\'s nothing wrong with selling IPS panel models which are labeled IPS, but this article clearly illustrates how easy it could be to false advertise to the majority of consumers.
So, I guess I\'m gonna buy a monitor in a store where i can actually see the monitor before buying it.
I changed the pc specs a bit as well ;
Asus A8N32-sli Deluxe (with the new x16 PCI-E) Becuz it has the new heatpipe cooling solution instead of the noisy & vulnerable fan on the original A8N-sli Deluxe
AMD X2 4800. No change there.
2Gb Corsair PC3200@222 XL TwinX DDR SDRAM PRO (change from non pro to \'pro\' dimms ; no OC-ing for me though)
only 1 NEC DVD +-R/+-RW ND-4550 Drive ;) instead of 2.
Zalman Fatal1ty FS-C77 cpu cooler
(at a fixed 2400rpm a little louder than cnps7700 cu, but a little bit more cool becuz of that)
XFX 7800GTX 512mb @ 580/1730
(they\'ll be phased out in February, so I read today :( )
WD Raptor 74Gb
X-Fi ExtremeMusic sb card
Any recommendations for a good 17 or 19 inch TFT monitor are welcome.

Only recommendation I would make is follow your own advice.
Specs don\'t tell the whole story when it comes to TFTs, you have to see them in person. Find a big box store (best buy, futureshop, compusmart) which has a very large display of TFTs all running the same signal from the same source. Take a look and find the one you like (make sure they\'re set \'close\' to default, sometimes people play with one or the other).
Personally, I have two Samsung TFTs, and I bought the second one a year and a half after the first. They have a pretty generous \'dead pixel\' policy, and my 3 year old 19" TFT only has one dead (dim) pixel, in a corner, so it\'s basically still flawless. End of the day, I loved their \'look\' when I compared it to others. If they\'re just running a tech demo, ask if they will show you a video-calibration screen (you might have to provide), so you can compare how they show difficult things. For example, there are many distinct shades of grey on this site... and I see all of them with this TFT, something that wasn\'t true of my crappy CRT (although my \'good\' CRT shows them no problem).
Some images to take (and make sure you don\'t go in at a super busy time, ie Christmas eve, or something):

The basic \'colour\' test.

More detailed colour, as well as some \'fine detail\' you can compare.

The lines should show up straight, no distortion on perfectly flat surfaces.

Great test for contrast and detail.

This thread is gonna explode my brain but I know there\'s some useful info in here

WHAT THE FUCK AM I LOOKING AT
PLEASE ASSUME I HAVE READ ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF THIS THREAD TOO.
THANKS.

Those are some screens I gave him to take to a box store to compare different TFTs with. They always have just a tech demo running or screensaver, but they\'ll use images if you want. Those have a variety of \'features\' that will show up differently on different quality monitors.
You know, that basically took longer to explain than if you had read it above.

You can try run a TFT test here:
http://tft.vanity.dk/
It\'s in Danish, but it\'s pretty straight forward. You press the black square to open the menu. From the top and down there are different tests/charts. In most cases if you need to press something it means the same thing in English (as in "start test(en her)". Just experiment a bit. :)

Thanx for the advice and testpics Fatalexception ! :)
ow and Jumpman....we understand.
Just look at the pics and have some fun or something.....
Atm (after hours of further research) I\'m interested in this Samsung Syncmaster 770P (http://www.behardware.com/articles/594-1/samsung-syncmaster-770p-pva-6ms-1500-1.html) , a Super-PVA panel monitor with a 1500:1 contrast ratio and only 6 ms response time.
Of course, I would choose the black version. The white version with silver bezel looks kind of Ipod-ish.
