From CES:
Building on Xbox 360 leadership in high-definition experiences, the company announced plans to deliver a new Xbox 360 external HD DVD drive in 2006. The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form.

Along with Vista, Gates is also expected to make his case for HD DVD--one of two competing formats for next-generation DVDs. Gates will announce Microsoft\'s plans to offer an external HD DVD drive that can connect to the recently released Xbox 360 game console.
By offering the drive as an Xbox add-on, Microsoft is hoping to win over consumers with a cheaper option than buying an all-new device to play next-generation Blu-Ray or HD DVD discs. Gates is also expected to demonstrate how the format\'s guaranteed ability to allow secure copies will allow DVD purchases to be used throughout the digital home.
ugh, as much as I love the push for hd this just makes it harder for blu-ray. I hope the consumer wins in the end
-
I\'m placing all my money on blu-ray.
-
Heh, this means little to Blu Ray as add-on have a history of not becoming popular.
I can see many reasons why Blu Ray will wins out in the end. One of them is storage capacity and support 8 layers. Many big name studios is backing Blu Ray, PS3 support it and it\'s built inside, not add-on. Also, beside being able to play Blu Ray movies on PS3, games can use the blu ray format too since it\'s built in.:D
-
HD-DVD will win cuz its easier to pirate stuff with it.
-
 @ microsoft
-
Seriously, I don\'t have room for a 360, router, power brick and an external drive.
I will, however, make room for a PS3.

Yes, it continually amazes me how MS continues to lay a power brick withthe 360.
Add-on
:op:
-
Well, it is indeed rather weak.
Not becuz of it taking more space,
but becuz it is an add on device.
Giving them away free, would even
not warrant succes.

At least it\'s getting HD-DVD. :)
-
should have delayed the launch and included it.
dreamcast 2.0, i believe is the term that was used

Did Sega doom DC by making a DVD addon drive for it ?
No. It flopped because they (sega) screwed up totally in marketing the machine well, especially in the PAL region. That wasn\'t a smart move after the 16bit add on debacles.
-
DC was rushed to market to beat PS2, tons of issues at launch, no real A+ launch titles or even after 6 months, eclipsed by sony less than a year later, etc...
they gave the DC away FOR FREE
how is that screwing up the marketing
a 200$ console for free, and noone bit
-
so wrong here mm
no real A+ launch titles or even after 6 months, eclipsed by sony less than a year later, etc...
-
personal preferences aside, i\'m accurate
-
I wouldnt\' want to buy the add-on drive that MS is offereing. They are probably gonna over price it to make money.
-
Probably?
-Dan
-
who wants a big fucken box next to thier 360 except for the !!!!!!!!\'s
the whole concept is lame
microsoft needs to grow a pair, start making 360\'s with built in hddvd drives instead, and scrap the "addon" idea
-
Yeah screw it. Let\'s support Blu-Ray.
xXx here we come!

yeah I call bullshit on this. DC had a great launch. It actually had more than 2 games you could enjoy.
Ps2 launched sucked ass. But for some reason you think it was the goat.
Add-ons are stupid and have sucked for every console. Just look at the ps2 hdd.
Second ppl are not going to go buy there entire collection of dvds on blueray. I got tons of dvds and there is no way I would go buy all those over again on blueray.
9 times out of 10 the average person has never even heard of blueray. And majority of people are still watching TV with an analog set.
-

like i said, personal opinion. i was a huge DC supporter, but noone cared about launch titles BECAUSE IT LAUNCHED 6 MONTHS EARLY to beat the PS2 to stores.
analog sets will be dead in a few years, they should have been years ago if the FCC werent pussys

I would have to say that\'s true. A lot of people here haven\'t even heard of DC. I mean, they actually havent heard of it!
-
What are they thinking?Trying to split their market?Force the consumer buy an add on?No way that would work.
If developers start developing games for HD-DVD forcing people to buy the add on to play them, it will sure create many pissed consumers.
On the other hand if they dont support it at all it will be a waste of investment.

or people will pay for a PS3.I dont see people buying an add on and an X360 just to play HD movies.
A stand alone movie player always > console movie playback.Especially when the format is new I expect many bugs and issues with it
-
millions of people will buy a PS3 solely because it plays blu-ray movies
those same people will laugh at the 360 with its add on external drive
-
of an inferior media

Imagine a living room...a 360 under a TV.....a power brick on the floor.....an external hard drive on the left....and an external HD-DVD drive on the right that will be hardly used.
Yep.Paid extra to reduce space in the living room.:D

That looks like a VCR straight out of the 80s

btw, there will be NO HD-DVD games for Xbox360. the addon drive is purely for movies.

Then what\'s the point? No movie company is backing HD-DVD from what I heard. HD-DVD is done.

My point exactly. Thanks for the info mm :) Blu-ray definitely is gonna be the winner. Both may be released but its gonna be like the Beta vs. VHS.

...except beta wins this time around

Four of those studios are sony. I think Hd-dvd could still win because it is more a step beyond the current media. Rather than a complete change of format.
I would expect the others to come around and back hd-dvd if it picks up. Even sony if blueray does not win. Just like beta. Sony lost and had to come around.
Personally I am fine with the current media and won\'t buy into any at this current moment. There is no real reason for me to want blueray or hd-dvd at this time.
-
at this time no, but when PS3 launches you\'re going to want a blu-ray player....that happens to be a PS3
-
Here\'s some more fun news:
LAS VEGAS - It was supposed to be the grand unveiling of a new generation in home entertainment when Kevin Collins of Microsoft Corp. popped an HD DVD disc into a Toshiba production model and hit "play." Nothing happened.
The failed product demo at this week\'s International Consumer Electronics Show was hardly an auspicious start for the HD DVD camp in what\'s promising to be a nasty, drawn-out technology format war reminiscent of the Betamax/VHS video tape battle.
Also, here\'s the list of manufacturers for players of each camp:
Blu-Ray:
Sony
yamaha
jvc
phillips
samsung
lg
mitsubishi
panasomic
zenith
Pioneer
Hitachi
Sharp
HD-DVD:
Toshiba
Sanyo
-
Yikes. Not too many manufacturers.
-
YOU FORGOT RCA FOR HD-DVD!
-
panasomic?
-
yea, hard to believe they\'re working with somy huh? ;)
-
Yanaha is there too
-
What about Toesheepa, or Mitch Sushie ?
-
hehe toesheepa. :)

It is also friggin\' huge.

Yeah, but it\'s elite.

It looks like the DVD player my family got back in 2001. That thing is huge. About the same size as the blu-ray.

Whoah thats ugly too.Actually its uglier. But I ve seen a BR player model by sony that looked nothing like that.It was slimmer and cooler.
-
It probably is an older prototype or something. Or was that from their website?

If by old - you mean CES 2006, then yeah, it\'s old .
-
usually first generation Blu Ray players, HD-DVD players are built like a tank. Same could be said on first generation DVD players. I guess that\'s one of the many reasons why it\'s costly...
-
But PS3 looked smaller and its not just a BR player. How are they going to do that?
-
Good question. I guess PS3 is different as it\'s build smaller which also helps cut down the manfacturing cost. That also makes me ponder why don\'t stand a lone Blu Ray players or HD-DVD players use cheaper parts and smaller size to keep the cost down too. A manufacturer can design two models, say one costing over $1,000 while the other costing $500 that are build smaller in size and uses cheaper parts. Why don\'t they do that, I don\'t really know.
I guess its just how business works, anything that is new and first generation are usually very expensive, then as time progress, the price comes down to a reasonable level as the production have increases, and many more models were being made for that type of technology too...
-
I dont think thats tha case.I mean its completely irrational and crazy for a company to choose the more expensive manufacturing method when they have the cheaper method(like the PS3 if we assume its cheaper).
Unless what you ment is that until PS3 is released, BR manufacturing costs will be reduced while production methods improved thus inabling Sony to achieve small size.
With other words BR players will be smaller by then too
When\'s the first BR player released btw?
-
about the big/small thing. if you look at laptops and compare it to PC\'s with the same specs, laptops are expensive. I think it\'s because the littler parts are more expensive than the biggerparts that do exactly the same thing. ^_^ do I win a medal?
-
how about cars. Say if this type of car have the same spec of the other car or maybe better spec, but how come the one with better spec cost cheaper than the other? I guess parts of it have to do with build quality...
Sure one might performs better than the other and are cheaper too. But the expensive one have better build quality and uses more expensive chips, hardware, etc. even though the performance isn\'t as good as the cheaper one...
I guess that just shows you that you usually gets what you pay for, but not always.
-
the car analogy is a bit stupid because we\'re mainly talking about electronics. wood, metal, plastic doesn\'t come into it. it\'s just a bit of silocone no matter how you look at it.
-
Ya and cars come with different features that may not be in other cars.
-
Good question. I guess PS3 is different as it\'s build smaller which also helps cut down the manfacturing cost.
Common knowledge : The smaller an electronic part, the more expensive it is to manufactor. This comes into play with laptops. That kills your theory on why the PS3 is smaller. My guess would be that the model I posted is not an optimized model , not to mention, it has things like the LCD screen and other things that the PS3 won\'t feature. I\'m sure that there is a lot in a basic BR player that Sony can cut down on and still throw the BR drive into a PS3 and I would imagine that is what they are doin\'.
Oh and you also have to wonder how much of that case is just empty space. A lot of these things, when opened up have a ton of room for heat. Sony may simply opt to have more vents , etc and keep it smaller, more compact.
Oh and from Gamespot..
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6142137.html
Xbox marketing chief says Microsoft could release peripheral for the Sony-backed disc if HD-DVD loses format war.
