Title: Is my Playstation 2 A Lost Cause?
Post by: Tristan on January 13, 2006, 09:36:39 PM
I was the proud owner of a Playstation 2 Model # SCPH-39001 and it just stopped loading discs all of a sudden. I have the Network Adapter for the unit and I tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it. Blowing out the Unit with Canned Air while I had a vaccum on the back. Get all that dust out. That didn\'t seem to help any of the issue.

I put in a disc and it takes me to that screen with Browser or System Config. I go into Browser and open and close the tray and it says "Reading Disc" and then disappears and nothing. I tried putting my ear on the playstation 2 to hear if it even tries to read the disc. But I didn\'t hear anything.

I have tried those DVD Player cleaner discs and that did not work. I am debating if I should open it up and give it a really good cleaning.

Before I do that option I was wondering if it was even worth my time. Should I just go buy a new one but be without the HDD. I was thinking of just waiting for the PS3 and going to pickup a Gamecube for $99 to kill some time.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank You.

Go to a 2nd hand shop and grab a refurbished model. Should be about the same price as a GC, maybe even less. The advantage is your PS2 game library won\'t go to waste while you wait for the PS3.

if you do grab the cube there were some deals pre-xmas for mario party 7, a gamecube system, and 2 official nintendo controllers all for $99.

if you search around you may still be able to find it. ;>

There are enough titles in the gamecube library to keep you entertained until the PS3 launch if you are getting tired of the PS2 releases.  Although, I\'d reccommend that you at least try to fix your PS2 before throwing in the towel.

I too would have to say try opening it unless you have a warrenty on it (chances are its way expired). If the online guides don\'t work, then its dead.

Had the same problem myself a few weeks ago. Open \'er up, I bet you\'ll find a ball of dust near the lens.

In case you didn\'t notice, there\'s a how-to link here on the main page

You can buy all the stuff to fix it (Lens, all type of hardware) or you can send it in to a shop near u and let it be fixed for 10-50$ or so...
