I\'m starting with a clean drive...nothing on it. All I have is the XP installation disc. I\'m not sure how to get this to install. I\'ve never worked with a clean drive before. WTF do I do? Any help would be much appreciated. All it says is it needs to scan for my hard drive configuration...then it just shows a black screen and does nothing. I\'m very confused. Booting from the disc isn\'t working.

-turn the pc on with the WinXP install CD in
- make sure the CD drive is 1st priority for boot device in your BIOS
(To go into your BIOS hit the delete key on bootup. It should say when to press it on screen)
- WinXP should ask if you want to partition your drive if it\'s unformatted, choose NTFS, and one big partition for the whole drive
- install

It still says it\'s testing my PCs hardware configuration...and then just stays on this black screen for an eternity giving me no inkling whatsoever that it\'s doing something. The CD drive is set as #1, but I can\'t get past the damn black screen. This is annoying.

Thanks for that. I\'m getting rid of it in a few days anyway...but I still need to get this thing running. The computer is a piece of shit and has had problems ever since it\'s been given to me.

Pesky gerbils.

I wouldn\'t be surprised.

so are you still building your own?

This isn\'t the one that I\'m going to build. I\'m giving this broken piece of shite back to my uncle. It actually had hardware damage when he gave it to me, which is lame. With the whole building a PC thing, that\'s going to be a long learning process (unless it doesn\'t take long to learn), and it\'ll be a while before I get good at that kind of thing. I\'m actually going to get a laptop for college so I\'ll just be buying it new.
Edit: I figured it out. I just installed Windows XP on my external drive...so that the PC could recognize at least one of the drive\'s configurations...and then when I got to the install screen, I just formatted the C drive and installed XP (it wasn\'t even formatted, so I think that was the issue...the PC didn\'t even recognize the drive at all). I think I\'m going to go with an Alienware laptop for college (shut up mm). I\'m not going for anything extreme...just one of the smaller laptops with the 15.4" Widescreen and a NVIDIA 6600 graphics card. I don\'t want one of those 4 inch, 5000 pound beasts. I just want something that\'s good enough to run Photoshop, video editing, etc..
