What are your thoughts? Benefits, disadvantages, agree with it, disagree with it? DEBATE!

We tried isolationism. That didnt work.
We need globalization, the problem is people fuck it up..but thats life.

Whell I\'m in the computing field which is inexorably tied with information technology. As a result, I have great familiarty and indeed, have been directly affected by the effects of globalisation. The recent emergence of India as an IT service provider has denied me many employment opportunities.
Were it not for the fact that I hate IT and am very greatful that I have been spared from countless hours of boredom, I would not be very happy. However, I am fully aware that for every position that is not available to me there are twelve Indians with an income, who would otherwise be subjected to abject poverty.
The effects of globalisation on the world is a net benefit.

The US stands to lose so much more while many other countries will gain. Hopefully, China\'s economy implodes.
-
And why do you think the US stands to lose so much more? Globalization brings in a cheap source of labor which reduces costs. Congress cries about outsourcing but those outsourced jobs are the kind that most Americans would stay away from anyway. Opening up the markets also increases competition, which forces domestic companies to up their efficiency. Protectionism only works to extend the lives of inefficient companies such as GM and Ford, ultimately increasing the cost of living for the average consumer.

i think you\'re wrong about the outsourcing part...I was part of that outsourced group and trust I work in the IT field. And i\'m sure there are thousands maybe millions of americans as a whole that love their IT job, only for it to be outsourced to those lowly paid programmers in India. Even tho me personally my job got outsourced to some firm in Texas, but it still felt the same as it being shipped off to another country.
I think the only jobs that you might be referring to consist of those jobs that alot of poor mexicans do..y\'know that cheap labor stuff. If that is what you was talkin\' about all along, then i agree.

The problem is while they are taking all are jobs. We are becoming the ones that are poverty ridden. I mean there are no jobs coming from india to america.
The american economy as a whole is fucked up. Especially down here in michigan. Were 1500+ workers just got laid off.
Shit is so screwed up. And the fucked up thing is all these dumb ass people from india don\'t do shit but screw up tech service.
Dell fuckin deals with india and there tech support sucks ass. You get on the phone with some jackass that has no idea what they are talking about and then you can\'t understand them.
I have yet to talk to a tech in another country that new what the fuck they were talkin about. At least if I am talkin to an idiot in america I can fuckin understand the prick.

Look at Walmart. Look at Dell. Check out the steel industry. Companies are off-shoring many of their big budget projects to low cost programmers.
Reducing cost is nice.....but I\'d rather pay the extra dollar knowing it goes back into the US economy.
The US has a huge trade defecit with China. It doesn\'t make much news but China has been known for under pricing their products to kill off their competition in the US, particularly in the electronics industry.

Because Michigan\'s economy is based in the auto industry. If America wouldn\'t make pieces of shit, people would buy them. Sorry but we need to bring in plants from over seas if we want to revive the auto industry in America.

lol, I\'m an american now? ^_^ one reason I\'m not worried about it is Australia\'s economy is doing fine. but I get where you\'re coming from. if I were unemployed, I frankly would not care that globalisation is sharing the world\'s wealth and making it a better place.
I do agree that the phone people from India should die of aids. I\'ve never had to deal with their tech support, but phone spamming is absolutley rife. and they\'re not super sweet like phone spammers should be either: they\'re rude and half the time they\'re reading off from a script like a fuckwit. I hope one of them accidentally activates one of their shitty nukes and kills the lot of them.
fuckers.
-
yea, those scripted phone calls really got to go. we can and we have read the instruction manual, we don\'t need it read back to us. jackasses.
although i don\'t agree with nuking india lol

Yeah, wtf is with that trend, on these forums ; tendency to bomb countries ?
ff-ing weird
on the subject ; isolation is bad. It\'s root is paranoia and fear is the worst kind of advice. Isolation sparks polarization which is extremely bad especially if opposing forces use religion as dogma excuses.
I should make some time to read No Logo (Naomi Klein).

Globalization is good because it evens things out.
If American workers think they can get lazy, just because they\'re part of a union and receive gubment benefits, then having their job outsourced to Ragheed in India is a good reason why they should stay on their toes. Work hard, make a better product, and the market will favor you.
Dell and its outsourced call-centers is an oddball issue, but it makes sense. The company makes a bulk of its money from selling its products to other businesses. In turn, these businesses have their own tech departments who are ready to fix problems at the drop of hat, they never need to call Dell for support. This allows Dell to cheap out when it comes to call centers.
The home user, however, is screwed, especially if they don\'t know how to work a PC.

The money doesn\'t get "lost," though. Let\'s create two theoretical countries: Aran and Baran. Aran imports from Baran. In order to obtain Baran\'s products, Aran must go to the world market and exchange its own currency for Baran\'s. If Aran keeps importing, then the world market supply of its own currency increases while the supply of Baran\'s currency decreases. This devalues Aran\'s currency relative to that of Baran\'s currency. The laws of supply and demand then dictate that Aran\'s exports will become cheaper while Baran\'s exports will become more expensive. What happens next is a reverse of the trade flow. Because Aran\'s exports are cheaper, it will be Baran that now imports, giving back Aran\'s currency that they had in reserve. Ultimately, the money flows back into Aran. It doesn\'t just get lost.
What China is guilty of is interrupting this free fluctuation of currency. Globalization, however, does not mean that one country gets screwed over in the long run. Every country benefits from free trade.
Sorry for replying so late, Gman. I got tied up with midterms.

Isn\'t it a global economy based on the global gold standard? When the economy booms in say Europe, doesn\'t it generate more money for us? I know nothing about economics.

No. The world did away with the gold standard a while ago. The global economy is now based on fiat money, with the dollar as the world reserve currency.

Yup. That James Bond movie where the superbadguy nukes Fort Knox to contaminate the gold deposit forced governments to act!
