Just curious - does anyone here have a digtial media center or experience with one? I\'m goin\' to pick one up and can\'t decide which one to get. It\'s a toss up bewteen the D-Link or the Pinnacle.
-
Can you browse your network for media files with the remote on this contraption? Sounds pretty cool
-
Depends on which model.
The one I\'m looking for builds a database and you can refresh it so it notices any new media files. My main thing is I have a TON of cartoons on my HD (ones not released on DVD) and I hate converting them to VCD or DVD. Figured I\'d just break down and buy one of these.
-
Ever consider putting together an inexpensive HTPC and throwing it in your theater?
I\'ve had one in mine for years and have NEVER had to make a DVD.
-
To lazy and to cheap.
And I don\'t have room for one.
-
Well, no that one anyone cares, but I decided on the Buffalo LinkTheater. Will pick it up and another HD most likely.
-
Post pictures homie, I\'m sure more are interested, we just don\'t know what it does

A link to AVSFORUM, where one of the head developers post, takes request for Firmware and what not.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=495915&page=1&pp=30
Basically, it\'ll allow me to stream my 30+ gigs of DIVX cartoons to my TV. Stream HD trailers or HD feeds to my TV. Play my MP3s via my reciever. Think of it as an MCE extender of sorts. I can stream all my VOB files to it (which is sort of nice, as my favorite DVD\'s are upstairs and I hate packing them down here and back up).
I mainly decided on this one for a few things.
1: Supported file formats. That is a huge plus for me, as I download a lot of old cartoon rips off of Torrent sites. Only stuff not on DVD .
2: BrianV posts on AVS. He is one of the head\'s on the project. He takes requests for firmware, releases it early and even will conference you on the phone with any issues. That kind of support is unheard of now\'a\'days.
A HTPC would most likely be idea, but I don\'t have the cash for one or the room to be honest. Anything I buy has to also be "female" aka "user-friendly". An HTPC would not fall under that and this does. I really doubt the DVD playback ever gets used, hell I already have two DVD players hooked up, my five DISC changer and my import player.
;)
Go file taxes today, pay some bills and pray enough is left for it.

I\'m interested in seeing how this one works out for you. Everywhere I look the reviews are very mixed on DMC\'s in general. As I rip more and more of my DVDs to my HDD i\'ll be looking into getting one of these.
I also have the WAF to deal with (wife acceptance factor)
so keep us updated once you get it up and running :)
-
Will do. I\'m positive that the DMC\'s are not all the way here yet, but I love the idea of one and can deal with a few kinks here and there. There are so many choices, but from the reviews I\'ve read the Linktheater seems to be the best bet.
-
Well, I ordered it, along with another 512MEG of RAM (puts me at the 1.5 gig mark) and picked up another 100 gig HD (puts me around 300 gigs). Should be here tommorw or Thursday.
Woot!
-
Just got it in today.
Hooked it up via wired network, worked like a charm. It has played every single file I throw at it. Love it. No complaints WHAT SO EVER.
-
I just bought a new computer so I hooked my old computer up to my HD set last week. Does the same thing. I use multiple hard drives on my main computer that I have networked. Can play all MP3s and all movie formats I could think of. Free.

Uh, yeah, but you missed the point, didn\'t you?
Cheaper than a new computer.
Less bulky than a new computer.
That was the point.
Don\'t have a spare PC to throw next to the TV.
-
yeah. I know. I actually looked at getting one, but my computer was such a piece of crap that I figured I\'d just get a new computer and strip the old one down to nothing and us it. Works great. Plenty fast enough for divx files and MP3s.

Oh, okay. Thought you was being a jackass - my bad.
I know what you mean, believe me, if I just had a spare PC , that is what I would of done. Still, my fiance bought this for me, along with some more RAM, so I can\'t complain. I\'m lovin\' it. I\'ve got 40 gigs of cartoons to watch.
-
It\'s an addiction. Pretty soon you\'ll join the terrabyte club with gman & me. ;)
Well actually I\'m only @ 840gb now but if I work hard enough and don\'t lose focus, I should achieve my goal. And then I just know I\'ll get laid.
-
Not sure I need that much. Then again, I do plan on rippin\' my DVD\'s and just streaming them, so maybe I will hit it up. Need to set up a RAID soon also, as I\'d hate to lose 40 gigs of cartoons. I could deal with re-ripping the DVD\'s, but not losing my cartoons.
:(
-
RAID is designed for fault tolerance, not data loss prevention.
get a tape backup or just burn them to DVD\'s.
-
any redundancy is better than none
but yeah, burn them to dvds and put them in the closet
-
Yea, well it looks like my Plextor 708-A just died. Will be replacing that here soon. Bah.

I ditched the software that the Linktheater came with and loaded up SwissCenter ( http://www.swisscenter.co.uk/ ). It\'s free and great software, although it does have some bugs, a lot of manual editing PHP files to get desired results.
Great thing it offers is thumbnails for movie files or albums.

Not to mention it will download all movie info from DVDPLANET or Lovefilm.
