Look it\'s a landslide!
A report from Media Create has shown that from January 30th to February 5th, the Sony PSP sold 25,905 units while the Nintendo DS sold only 25,321 units in the same week.
However, it still may not be game over for Nintendo as the new Nintendo DS Lite is expected to hit retail on March 2nd in Japan and may continue to boost sales.
Things are heating up.

yeah people are waiting for Lite.
-
The Survey says! (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/11/poll-63-of-gamers-to-buy-a-ds-lite-in-japan/)
Gist:
65% of Japanese people plan to buy the DS lite, only 35% are not going to have the system when it comes out. The Lite has convinced more than 35% of Japanese who didn\'t have the system to get one, and 27% plan to upgrade.

Well its not like they sold an incredible amount more. Still kinda cool though. Nintendo has been #1 for years and this is the first time they got beaten at their own game (in the handheld market).
-
The Nintendo DS has been selling very well throughout all of Europe over the past year. The DS has sold more than the Sony PSP in every major European market. In the U.K. the DS leads the PSP by over 205,000 units. In France the gap widens to 250,000 units. Nintendo\'s success also carries over to a combined 300,000 unit lead in Germany and Spain. And finally, the rest of Europe has purchased 505,000 more DS\'s than PSP\'s. The grand total of sales for Sony\'s PSP is 2,440,000. Meanwhile, the Nintendo DS has sold 3,700,000 units.
To be fair, it is worth mentioning that the Sony PSP was released a full six months after the Nintendo DS and at a higher price point.

To be honest, I would rather Nintendo dominate the handheld market the way Sony does the console market. Nintendo gave me a chance to play the Game&Watch years ago when gaming was for nerds... now that it is cool Sony has suddenly decided to be part of the act.
I love my PSP, but I would rather see the DS succeed.
If we lost Nintendo then I would stop gaming.
-
Im not surprised. Iv played the PSP a bit, and iv only looked at DS but the graphics looked bad and the game(s) look pretty boring.
Not sure if PSP is a lot more expensive but id probably never buy a DS. Personally..im waiting for PSP2 MAYBE..not sure if ill ever buy a handheld thing unless im moving around.
Last "handheld" i had was lynx, haha. Anyone have one of those? Not the newer one..but the huge one that ate batteries like a bitch. (my brother had the gameboy)
-
PSP has better graphics and inferior games.
That\'s the gist of it.
-Dan
-
Inferior battery life, massive machine, more expensive in both hardware and software. The only advantage PSP has over DS is licensed pornography. But with the Play Yan, you can bring all sorts of with you in your DS.
-
PSP > DS
cant stop arguing now
ps. don\'t forget to buy the all-new DS lite, and start saving up for the upcoming DS lite advanced.
-
SALES=KING THEREFORE DS>PSP
sit down mm, or if you are already sitting stand up and sit back down again
-
oh, are we talking about psx and N64?
i\'m sorry, i didn\'t realize you had a tender spot over that
-
personally find psp a better machine, the ds is still doesn\'t interest me in the slightest.
Nintendo must be feeling some kind of threat from sony to release a "DS Lite" before the standard system has barely had a shelf life.
Is pokemon on it yet?
-
Most of the people that don\'t have any interest in DS haven\'t played it for very long.
No offense, but it\'s the damned truth. I\'m not talking about just on these forums, either. Evil Avatar (the man that runs the site) started bashing it one day and then later stated "I played it for 2 minutes on a kiosk" ...
Not that the DS completely blows away the PSP. It doesn\'t. The PSP hardware is really something. It even has some retail games that knocked my socks off. Compare it as a gaming experience side-by-side with the DS, though, and the DS is clearly better.
The PSP may hit its stride yet.

I had a lynx with a bunch of games, got it for christmas ages ago. I still have it buried in my house somewhere. Xenophobe & Gates of Zendocon were the shit.

no, we are talking about ds and psp
get back to the subject plz

you know, in the end, any of your opinions don\'t matter. solid sales numbers from the past ten months has had the DS in the lead by up to 100,000 units each month. it\'s consistently been the leading console in Japan, outselling all others combined. it\'s just stupid to assume that interest in it has suddenly dried up. people are just waiting for lite.
look, consider this: the reason why the PSP outsold the DS wasn\'t because the PSP sold more (and just by a few hundred units I might add). it was becase of a sudden drop in DS sales. there\'s a fairly simple explanation: people are waiting for lite. next month, when it finally does come out, PSP will be back to selling 1/4th the number of DS\'s.
-
no shit?

Heh, even when you agree it\'s argumentative. ;]

i cant remember the names but i had a jet fighter one (plane looked like a blue angel), and a skateboarding/hackey sack/biking one that i sucked at. and a pong-ish one but ur blocker thing was on the front of the screen and the map was 3D.
Probably a few more i cant remember.
edit: RAMPAGE,haha..that was an awesome game.
-
It was bound to happen eventually...DS has been out longer therefor the people who wanted mostly already have it, PSP hasnt been out as long so common sense would say that eventually the PSP would outsell the DS.
-
no, people are waiting for Lite.
-
They\'re waiting for Lite. That said, the PSP is bound to outsell the DS eventually.
It has a steady stream of games, a lot of them decent. The problem is that it (to date) has rarely featured AAA games. I\'m sure that the DS release schedule will cool down from time to time giving a boost to the PSP and PSP games.
-
dude.. c\'mon.. now I said DS is outselling PSP by up to 100,000 units each month, but I have sinced realiesd that those figures are actually each fucking week. PSP has no chance. DS caters to nubs and there are a lot more nubs out there than l337\'s. although that\'s not to say the DS doesn\'t have much to offer l337\'s.
honestly, saying the PSP will eventually beat DS is like saying XBox will beat PS2. they\'re not even in the same leauge.
-
I meant on a weekly/monthly basis. Not "lifetime."
-
Its strange how well the PSP is doing so far compared to the DS.
At the beginning I wasnt surprised since they were both new and didnt have many games.
But now the PSP still doesnt have many AAA titles. The DS clearly surpasses the PSP.
I think what sells the PSP is the fact that its more powerful and because it can do much much more.
I am still waiting for original AAA titles to be released on it but I see nothing yet.
Only newish game I saw recently that makes me want to get a PSP more is Tekken 5 Dark Ressurection. And I hope you can compete against real players online.

the period between the DS Lite announcement and the DS release is an abberation. a massive anomoly. situations like these are the only things that\'ll help the PSP. once the Lite is out PSP will once again be relegated selling 1/4th the number of DS\'s. I don\'t think slight DS cooldowns or minor PSP woowoo\'s is going to make much of a difference. it really is like xbox vs ps2.
-
every time i see that word "ds lite" i can\'t help but laugh.
-
Every time I hear Australia, I can\'t help but to think god damn shithole with monster sized faggots living in it. And boomerangs.

hey fuck you

You totally had me thinking the word “Australia” tweaked your memory on the description of your own F@#ked up country till you said boomerangs, then I just thought your a uneducated American dickhead.
meh..

small things.......

I didn\'t see numbers, but I read that Nintendo sold out the white DS Lite in Japan on its March 2nd launch.
It just now followed up by releasing the blue and red versions, and those sold out the first day.
Japan is into Nintendo\'s thinking, Revolution might do ok over there since it borrows the DS philosophy...
-Dan
-
Ok? Nintendo is gonna be awesome in Japan especially with the Revolution. The GameCube did very well over there. Not as good as PS2 but still beat the utter shit out of Microsoft (no surprise there though). I am really looking forward to seeing the sales figures between Nintendo and Sony. It should be interesting.

oh these forums are slowly reaching gamefaqs status
-
well I thought the best way to make my point was just present the facts.
DS > PSP
-
Outsold the PSP almost 3:1 that week.
And they just released the other two colors this week. Should have an impact. Those sales were for the release of the white DS Lite. Gamers bought it up plus 50,000 of the original model.
NCL will support both models in Japan, NOA plans to phase out the original gray model in America... No release date for the states.
Have you seen the difference in brightness? I kinda want one. :)

Hey! Syphon Filter and Daxter! Sure, the PSP isn\'t selling out... but at least it\'s getting some mouth-watering games now.

Sales = King.
Not only did the DS outsell the PSP by 6,008. The DS LITE outsold it by 25,318! Combine the numbers people, the DS handheld outsold the PSP by 31,326 units.
I\'m sure someone will spin-doctor this , but sales don\'t lie. The DS killed the PSP by simply releasing another version.
-
the DS was always killing the PSP. even without a new version, it would\'ve kept on killing it. now it\'s killing it even more.

Do your math again, the DS outsold the PSP by about 80,000 that week.
Each version outsold it and combined, they blew it away. ;]

Nice to see even GC is outselling 360

Well, it\'s Japan.
Anyway, the DS is an awesome little handheld, so those sales aren\'t surprising. The PSP isn\'t doing bad but I expected it to do better. I thought games like Breath of Fire 3 and Tales of Eternia would remedy this but I guess not.

Only thing that will fix the PSP is a price drop.
-
that probably won\'t help. you\'ll notice the people buying PSP are mostly male and 20 somethings. DS\'s appeal is a lot broader than the traditional gaming demographic. it\'s not just an issue of price.
-
Somebody dig up the DBZ: Shin Budokai sales. It\'s pretty much contending to be the best selling PSP game ever. I hope to god all us 20 somethings are not the ones eating it up.
