Title: So I was a Best Buy yesterday.....
Post by: Titan on March 05, 2006, 10:29:42 AM
I can\'t believe how fast the CRT TVs are getting phased out. I was at Best Buy yesterday getting a CD and check prices for an S-Video cord to plug my laptop to a TV (while I was there, I decided to check TVs for my apartment next year). I noticed they were clearancing the floor model CRT TVs and they didn\'t have many left. All they had were flat panel TVs. I\'m actually quite shocked and pissed. I like CRT better than flat panel (mainly price reasons and personally think the picture is a bit better). I woudln\'t be surprised if you don\'t see them in another year. Anyway, I just figured I\'d spew for a bit.

i love my 36" HD CRT

plasma, lcd, DLP all can\'t touch the image/color quality

sed should make everyone happy when prices level out.

analog needs to go o_0

i disagree with analog needs to go.  SED display itself is analog even though most of the elctronics part are digital.  In order to get that deep black and contrast ratio, they need to use the analog method.  Those phosphors used in both SED and CRT are being controlled in an analog matter rather than digital.

Plasma uses similiar method like CRT and SED too, but what really hurts the plasma picture quality is that the phosphors are being manipulated digitally.  And the digital signal isn\'t fast enough to change intensity of each pixels, without light burst or something...hence, causing a drop in contrast ratio and black level too.

That\'s why you see many plasma have a contrast ratio of around 1,000 - 2,000.  Some even listed the inflated rate of 4,000 - 5,000.  But in real world, its actually less than that.  Either way, plasma\'s black level is much better than LCD, and are improving, but still far from the black level of CRT.

Honestly, I am not sure why analog is better at changing intensity/gradation than digital...but that just shows that not everything digital is better.  There are few exceptions where analog is much better in some cases.

Um, did I not say that CRTs will be gone by next year only a couple months ago?

I\'m sure you\'ll change your tune as things progress.  Everything is going digital.  Professional photographers are now saying they can\'t tell the difference between 32mm & a high-end DSLR.  With D5 being all the buzz nowdays for Hollwood, and new movie theaters are built with digital projectors, it\'s just a matter of time before film seems ancient.

Analog holds some advantages for now, but ibefore you know it engineers will catch up & even surpass what we always regarded as top quality.

A top of the line DSLR camera have the same image sensor of a 35 mm film, that\'s why the difference is not that big when compare between the two.  But the color depth, film still rocks in that area.  But it looks like digital is catching up in that area, where usually most mid to low end cameras have 8 bits per channel, most top of the line have as many as 12 bits per channesl to 16 bits per channels.

But so far, a mid priced 35 mm film camera still have one advantage over 35 mm image sensor digital camera and that is can reproduce all the primary colors without filtering, hence revealing top notch detail without color smearing.

So far, I haven\'t seen a 35 mm image sensor digital camera that uses 3 Chips per image sensor yet.  Biggest reason is the cost to make them.  Its just a matter of time...

Its true some movie theaters are starting to replace film projector with digital video projector.  The quality of some of those video projectors are amazing, like the 3 chips LCOS that have 3840 x 2160 resolutions.  4 times the resolution of even the highest defintion TV.  And this year, I finally read 3 chips DLP 720p are coming out for consumers with a hefty price tag.

Sure for most parts, digital are improving and are starting to make analog obsolete.  But the bandwidth and the speed to process those digital information is not there yet to compare to analog processing or film\'s quality.

In many cases, it\'s better to use digital electronics part, but in some cases it better to process those digital signal into analog.

Look at plasmas for instance, it couldn\'t get the deep black of a CRT because the signal are process digitally, and for some strange reason, the black level doesn\'t go as deep had it been process in an analog fashion.

SED changes that by using the analog method of processing the electron emitters to igniting those phosphors.  Not to mention SED only uses 1/3rd the power consumption compare to plasma of similiar size.  Thanks to Canon for managing to achieve that.

I read your post. I saw the stuff in best buy then thought about what you said and then decided to ask the questions anyway. I read it but I didn\'t care about it :p

Agreed. I wanna get a CRT widescreen with HD for my apartment next year. First off its cheaper, secondly, I thought it looked a shitload better than those flat panel TVs. I dunno, there\'s just something about the picture I never liked.
