Title: California - Ban On Smoking In Public Places...
Post by: Evi on March 27, 2006, 01:43:58 AM
Have you guys been watching the news on this BS? They\'re talking about banning smoking in all public areas. You can\'t even smoke outside...almost anywhere. WTF is this crap? I don\'t smoke, but this is completely asinine.

Found an article:

Quote
CALABASAS, Calif. - No more smoking in the park. Lighting up on the sidewalk could bring a fine. Dining on the restaurant patio? Don\'t bother asking for matches.

One of the strictest tobacco bans in the nation went into effect in the Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas last week, making smoking off limits in public places where someone else might be exposed to secondhand smoke: indoor businesses, outdoor businesses, parks, outdoor cafes, even apartment building common areas.

"We just don\'t want anyone blowing smoke in someone\'s face. Unfortunately, what smokers do is harmful to everybody else. People should have the right to breathe clean air," said Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Washburn.

California air-quality regulators declared secondhand smoke a toxic air pollutant earlier this year.

The city took it a step farther, declaring secondhand smoke to be a public nuisance and approving an ordinance banning smoking in all public places — indoors and out — where people might congregate.

Hotels can still allow smoking in up to 20 percent of their rooms, and smoking can be allowed in approved designated areas at shopping malls and work places in the upscale city of 23,000 residents.

But if a nonsmoker asks a smoker to stop, the smoker must snuff it or face a possible fine in the hundreds of dollars or even a lawsuit.

"We salute Calabasas for raising the bar," said Jim Knox, a legislative advocate for the American Cancer Society in Sacramento. "Smoke regulations can play a very important role in reducing public exposure to harmful secondhand smoke."

Nationally, hundreds of U.S. cities and several states restrict smoking. In California, where communities have been at the forefront of smoking bans, San Francisco last year banned smoking in parks and stadiums, and oceanfront communities\' smoking bans have inspired others in Florida and Delaware to designate smoke-free beaches.

Among the states, Colorado lawmakers last week approved a statewide ban on smoking in most public building, and New Jersey\'s Smoke-Free Air Act, under fire from bar owners because it exempts casino gambling floors, goes into effect April 15.

A.  I don\'t give a damn about smoker\'s rights.  I have little respect for stupid people, and smoking is one of the stupidest things you can do.  I wish we could somehow increase the toxicity of cigarettes so these people would die off faster.  I\'m sick of supporting the treatment of their cancers.  Did you know stupidity is a carcinogen?
2.  Secondhand smoke doesn\'t scare me.  I already breathe plenty of other harmful crap on a daily basis, as clips said.
C.  This ordinance will be struck down.
4.  It\'s freaking Calabasas.   Who gives a shit?    All the yuppie scumbags who buy houses out there end up commuting to Los Angeles alone in their SUVs, pumping out carbon monoxide up and down the 101.  They can all go to hell and die.

They pulled the same crap here in Jersey. Atleast you can smoke outside  but bars and diners aren\'t allowed to smoke in. Which is gay about the law is that you can smoke anywhere in Atlantic City because casino owners don\'t want people to leave theeir casinos.

I can think of two local diners off hand that have smoking sections.

That\'s not supposed to be allowed?

Until like April 17 or something like that they can allow some smoking. There\'s a diner by me athat allows smoking in a smoking section during a specific time frame.

Washington DC and Boston have banned smoking from bars. Oddly enough, their revenue went up instead of down!

Yeah, New York definitely banned smoking in all indoor public places, including bars and the like.  For purely selfish reasons, as a non smoker, I like it.

Really? What about people who drive? Should they die off faster too? Sick of paying for other diseases say caused by unhealthy eating? Are you perfect in your day to day life?

Don\'t get me wrong, smoking is stupid but it\'s legal to do so.

Now if our wonderful local and federal governments were so concerned about the dangers of smoking it would be banned. Oh wait, but what about the taxes?

Tobacco has not been banned thanks to the tobacco lobbyists.  It will be banned eventually.  You can count on it.  I\'m merely saying it should happen sooner rather than later.  Doesn\'t that make sense?  Save more lives by eliminating it sooner rather than later?

I was kidding about killing off the smokers.  I\'d prefer to force them all off tobacco cold turkey by making it illegal overnight.  No this is not the same as the prohibition of alcohol and narcotics.  There won\'t be a huge, long-term black market for tobacco, because it doesn\'t get you high.

I say go for it. I don\'t want the second hand smoke. My whole family smokes and I personally can\'t stand it. I can only hope more states ban smoking in public places.

Yeah, Evi it\'s crazy that us non-smokers don\'t want smoke blown in our face. You may be a non-smoker, but you obviously don\'t grasp the issue at hand.

Huh? I freaking hate smoke being blown in my face. I\'m quite allergic to cig smoke and it bothers me when I\'m around it. Indoor places I can understand because the smell affects non-smoking areas and it\'s nauseating. But the immense area in which they\'re not allowed to smoke is ridiculous.

Smoking sucks ass though, no doubt.

Wait a second....

You\'re saying that tobacco is not currently banned because our government needs the revenue from taxes on cigarette sales... NOT because the the tobacco industry has been energetically lobbying congress for the last 50 years???

That doesn\'t make a lot of sense. We tax cigarettes, only to spend the revenue (and more) on public health support for smoking-related illnesses. If tobacco was banned, we wouldn\'t need the tax revenue anymore.

But its not a tax that everyone has to pay. You only pay the cigarette tax if you smoke. I don\'t, I don\'t pay it so I\'m happy.

Story time:

When I used to ride the bus into DC there was this smoker at the last bus stop.  He always \'politely\' moved away from the line while he had his good morning smoke.

Problem is, he REEKED of cigs right after.  Within a 6\' radius you could smell the walking smoke cloud like he was right next to you.  So a long, comfy, expensive bus ride turned into pure coughing hell if you were lucky enough to get the last seat.  The people in front and behind him also suffered.  Whenever someone got off his partner quickly left him for the new opening.

Of course he didn\'t seem to give a damn.  Just kept on smoking every morning.  The people who created this ban were probably on that bus.

They recently put a ban on smoking in all indoor areas on my campus.  Nothing quite like seeing the smokers huddled together for warmth just so they can get a quick smoke in.

I\'m sorry, but I think smokers should not be allowed to smoke ANYWHERE except in the privacy of their own home. Anywhere else it effects other people.

I was just poking fun at you.

I understand the whole "keeping an open mind" perspective, but when it comes down to effecting other people\'s health, I really no see no grey area in this. Smoking is bad, no one can argue this. Second hand smoke does exist. No one can argue this. No grey area. Ban smoking in everyplace but the private home.

Actually...

People aren\'t allergic to cigarette smoke, it\'s not an allergen. It\'s an irritant, though, and can definitely bother you.

The more you know...

Also, if we ban smoking to only in a person\'s home because of how it affects others - what if I\'m a nonsmoker who lives in the same house as a smoker? Maybe we ban smoking for people with children? What about in their cars? What about we just leave them alone, if you don\'t like someone smoking outside near you, move.

why do people whine about cigg smoke, yet drive cars that put far worse chemicals and other pollutants in the air

hell, the most anti-smoking person i know smokes pot like there\'s no tomorrow.
i make fun of her everytime we go out for the mass quantities of chemicals she ingests at dinner
vegans = lame

i would say i\'m a non smoker, but i will have one occasionally at the bar.

banning smoking in restaurants is fine.
inside public buildings?  also fine.
but outside in the open air?
it\'s free fucking will, don\'t like it, move to a desert island where noone will bother you.

two things....
1. i could\'ve swore after bloomburg banned smoking in indoor area\'s that he reversed it shortly after, upon complaints from certain factions losing business...*i\'ve seen this on all of the local news stations*.

2. shortly before i moved to georgia,...me and the wifey went to this nightclub in n.y. called temple...and there were a couple of people smokin\' by the bar.. i didn\'t give it much thought as i don\'t care either way, but what i saw on the local news, combined with what i saw at the nightclub, lead me to believe bloomburg reversed his stance on it...

I\'m allergic to all smoke. That includes sitting around a camp fire. Though I tough it out since camp fires are just so damn cool. And with cig smoke, my eyes turn red, my lungs get stuffed up, and I get breathe. Seems like allergies to me (since that\'s the same crap that happens with other things I\'m allergic to). Meh.

Nope, pretty sure smoking is still banned in NYC...

As for seeing smoking indoors, lots of clubs/bars allow it, but illegally...

Especially Asian clubs/bars...

They\'ll hang a sign in the open area saying No Smoking but in a private room, they\'ll provide ash trays...

Really. My campus is 50 feet unless tehre is a designated smoking area (which there is only one next to my dorm that I know of). Its not really enforced and people smoke right in front of buildings but there are signs all over about it.

I think it\'s a good idea. Smoking can cause many respiratory problems and cancer, even if it is only second hand smoke. Its not fair if I\'m walking down a street and I have to breathe in dangerous smoke from someone\'s cigarrette. It\'s even worse in Europe though because a lot of people smoke there, especially in the pubs.
