Title: I\'ve started building - Finishing up
Post by: videoholic on April 11, 2006, 04:18:47 AM
Should be scraping the property and getting ready for concrete next week.  Bound and determined to get the roof up before our rainy season.

Seems like we have been working on this thing forever with delays from the architect, delays from the building department, wife getting canned....

FInally we have our loan signed and are ready to go....

Now, the stresses of building a house, producing two TV shows and having a baby.

I may as well shave my head now.

That rocks vid.  Living the American dream, and self-employed to boot :applause:   The house will be in FL so it has to be made of concrete correct?

Take some pics if you can.

i\'d build it out of titanium.. but that\'s just me

you don\'t have to build your home out of concrete in florida, but you have to have all these crazy hurricane clips, straps and fasteners to better hold your roof and walls together

Where\'s the rec room?  Do you guys make full basements in Florida, or no need?  I like the kitchen... and the fact that the secondary rooms are so far from the MBR so you won\'t be bothered (or bother) with noise.

See the stairway by the kid\'s rooms?

That goes up to a 15x40ish room for a home theater/office.I don\'t remember the exact dimensions.

When the house is complete it is going to be drywall and plywood.  Completely unfinished.

I\'m then going to complete the room as an office and write it all off.

Nice when you have a profession where you can write off a $9,000 3 chip DLP front projector.  :)

damn, nukka!

next time I get stranded in FLA, maybe I can stretch out a bit....;)

My house would fit in your porch & garage. :D

Then again, I can realistically clean my house, mow my lawn, & bang Kyoko in one afternoon, whereas you will still be cleaning your garage. By the time you move on to the front hallway, I will be in the shower.

Wow, that\'s a very big house, or two houses combine together.  how did you get to be that rich?  Good for you btw.  Just give me half of your house and i would be happy.  j/k.

Oh, save those pictures in png is more prefer than jpg...png is a great lossless codec that save a lot of bandwidth on pictures with less color on them.  The lesser of different kind of shades of color on the picture, the more bandwidth it can save and retrieve them as original uncompress...just a suggestion on something i notice about png last year.

Well the files are really full size 1/4" scale and I quickly reduced them.

The house will cost us about 300 to build.  We have 150k to put down on it, so really it\'s not that big of a deal.  The house will be worth over 600k, but it won\'t cost us nearly that much to build since we are doling owner/builder.

2 grand a month?......before i purchased my home georgia, i was just about to buy an older home in jersey and my mortgage would\'ve been around 2100 a month...i could\'ve paid it, but i think that\'s a bit much, now i have a very comfortable 975.00 a month mortgage. Cost of living and things of that nature matter as well(for each state), but luckily i\'ve found a job paying just shy of what i was gettin paid in jersey..:fro:...and congrats VID..that is a huge home... i think my home is about 2800 - 3000 sq ft total....Post some mo\' pics as the home contruction starts...:)...and stop bein so modest,..we all know you\'re the big balla in these forums!..;)

Right now I pay 800 a month on my current house and 700 a month on my property.  So with taxes, we\'ll be about a grand and a half a month more with the new house, but as an investment it will do wonders for our future.  Hopefully we can buy more property and do it again one day.

I\'m building cabin out on my property right now. It\'s not as extravagant as what you\'re building, but it\'s still pretty nice. We just got the bathroom finally put in with a working bath/shower, sink, and toilet. So, as my dad puts it, we can now "shit, shower, and shave".

That\'s lookin\' real nice, vid. I can\'t wait to see the finished product. I\'d show pics of myself working on the cabin, but that would just feel too weird.

That\'s not "middle class", well at least not in Kentucky. Maybe it is in Florida. Here in Kentucky, espically around the area I live, a middle class house is something around 70 - 90K. Being realistic, Tasha and I will most likely buy a house in that range, with probably around 15K down. Then again, maybe I\'m just poor? Either way, that\'s another two years away most likely. Paying my car off with income tax this year and then all of \'07 will be putting back for the down payment.
;)

With that said, nice house and good luck.

Oh and Chiz - make her pop it out two days early, ya\' know for good luck. I mean, I was born on August 12th, has to be a good day.

what the fuck!?!? Us northern folk don\'t see cinder block houses. Then again, we don\'t have hurricanes. My house is wood with plaster & lathe walls, and it\'s ballon-framed, meaning the studs go all the way from the top of the foundation to the roof. And I think the studs are 20" apart, not 16.

So what do you do, build walls inside of the cinder block?
Title: I\'ve started building - Finishing up

I may be wrong but wasn\'t that just pics of the foundation?

Post by: videoholic on July 22, 2006, 02:44:19 PM
We have termites here so you really don\'t want a wood framed house.

What you do is for the interior walls you put hard insulation.  You will see it as 4x8 sheets.  Then you put a baton strip in for spacing so you can have your wiring and such in the walls.  THen sheetrock. So you lose about an inch and a half of interior space.

Interior walls are like normal.  Pressure treated bottom plate and 2x4 studs.  You see all those knock outs on the bottom of the walls?  Those are where steel is in the walls.  At least every 48" there is a steel rod going from roof to footer.  These knockouts are where the 10" steel rods tie in with the steel that is embedded in the footer. After the inspector comes, we cover these holes up and fill these chambers with concrete.  It ends up being a friggen rock solid wall.

We also put steel on the top layer of block that tie in the roof trusses.  The house is rated for 130 mph winds which means it can take quite a bit more than that.

We\'ll have no problems next time you come visit chizzy.

Pouring the walls with concrete tomorrow.  Roof is being deilvered on the 14th.  Should go up by the end of that week.

I have a fishing shoot the 10th-13th. I think we are going to have our baby on the 14th (going to induce).  I have an A&E shoot possibly starting on the 17th for 5 days..

Busy couple weeks in the vid household.

Looks like the walls are going to be framed the following week.  The guys want to jump right on it.  WOoHOo.

only thing that bugs me is I could have put longer windows in the bathroom.  The three together in the front on the right hand side.  Had I known my house was going to sit so high I could have done it.  THey are small windows five feet up in the room so you don\'t see my wife\'s bitties.  But since our house is so high I could have really made the windows longer.

Oh well. When we put the tub in we can set the tub pretty high and make it look right from the inside.

Plus we are going to have big planter boxes in front of those windows so it won\'t look odd when it\'s all done.

My Camera phone sucks.

I\'ll upload more pics probably next week some time.  I now have walls studded out and they are shingling today.  It will take them 3 days to put the shingles on.  Roof is 8900 sq feet and an 8/12 pitch which is very steep.  Dude came very close to falling off putting the underlayment in.

By the way, the underlayment is called Titanium and it\'s twice as strong as 30 pound tar paper which is standard.  No clue why the guy put it on.  I told him I didn\'t need it.  Oh well.  A good selling point.  THe roof can go six months without shingles with this stuff.  Pretty cool.

I also installed the roof window today for the theater room.  Very nice window.  No pic of it yet.  I am working through next Friday so I won\'t be able to be out there for a while.

Now that the walls are up, I am really liking how the house is layed out.  It\'s not broken up at all.  It\'s very basic and everything makes sense.  I was in a house down the street the other day that is about 4500 square feet and at least a thousand of it is hall way.  I have maybe 80 square feet of hall way in my house.

I may have been exaggerating a bit about the bathroom, but there are 2 outhouses there, both with awesome views. Nothing\'s nicer than having a cup of coffee and taking a dump whilst looking out into a scotch pine forest ravine at sunrise...

here\'s the interior:

whoops...

btw Vid, where is your outhouse going? Nothing would be more convenient having 3 men in the house...Lona may insist upon it.

Well drywall was hung the other day so they are finishing taping and texturing that this week.  I am also getting the outside stucco done this week as well.

1st two are our bathroom.

3rd is looking out our bathroom into the bedroom.

4th is from front door to living room

5th is from dining room looking through pantrys to kitchen.

1st kitchen looking to living room

2nd, same just a little to the left.

3rd master bedroom looking into bathroom

4th entry to the right.  Bedroom is straight ahead.  We have a wall fountain going on that wall straight ahead where the plug is in the middle of the wall.

5th exterior with windows final days before stucco.

it\'s pretty crazy how long construction can take.  I\'m hanging drywall in my house this week.  Just curious, how many guys are on the drywall crew doing your house?

A Van of 8 mexicans pulled up to my house last week at 7am and my house was finished that day by 5pm.  It\'s freaking sick how fast they work.  It then takes about a week to tape and finish it, but it\'s amazing how fast they can hang it.

I did the arches.  I really didn\'t want any because everyone has them.  So I made mine a bit different by not making them arch all the way across and I put the flat spot in all of them.  There are two arches that are a more narrow doorway and those are full arches with no flat spot.

And they want to send the Mexicans back over the border ;)

What kind of tile are you doing in the master bath? I\'ve been digging travertine lately...

http://www.marblemaster.com/travertine/Travertine_Tile/Travertine_gldnsun.html

though when I redo my bath it will only cost around $200 for the tile. I like the tumbled stuff, kinda rustic...

Our bath is a ceramic travertine like floor with travertine walls.

The pool bath is a slate looking ceramic floor tile with 2 inch slate pieces on the floor and 4 inch slate pieces on the walls.

Kids bath is wide tile, probably 4x8 beige tiles.  We will then inset travertine diamond tiles.  They also have a shelf inset in the back wall of the shower stall that will have all travertine.

I am also putting stone bowls in the kids bath and the pool bath.   I\'d like to put them in my bath too, but they are 300 a piece.  enough is enough.

Probably. But being the first person to sit on a toilet no one else ever has used must be the greatest feeling in the world.

Why didn\'t the tub go in first?  It looks like it is going to be huge.  I assume there is enough room to get it in now that walls are up.

Tub goes in last so you don\'t fuck it up.

Here are some current pics of the house.  THe red room is our dining room. We are doing a wood floor and I am getting a stone table.  The lighting is all old style rought iron.

THe other shots are of the butler\'s pantry and the kitchen which is all slick and modern.

First shot is Logan and Brayden\'s bathtub.  Second two is the master bath.

My tile guy sucked ass and I fired him.  Have a new guy starting this week for the rest of the house.

Then is a shot of our bedroom

last shot is my data cabinet.  I have a large amp to go at the bottom and a couple more things to go in still.  I will be able to route anything anywhere which will help me future proof the house.

I also have a very open attic and drops in the walls so I can drop lines anywhere later.

shwing.  We\'re doing wood floors in there too.
We also have a really cool chandalier that matches those sconces.

I just unloaded 1600 square feet of floor tile today.  My body is killing me right now.  Didn\'t feel it when I was doing it, but man I feel it now.

We get a 2000 dollar penalty if we don\'t close by april 10th.  FUll speed ahead.

Or porking my wife on "Survivor Island"

Doing pavers on the driveway now.  BACKBREAKING.  I didn\'t want to do it for quite a while, but we found out the other day we have to have sod to get our CO so that means we need sprinklers which means I need to finish the driveway.  Oye...

I only have like 2 days off for the next month so we may be moving in before I can even go back there after tomorrow.

Hey video,

So what was your expected cost when building this swank adobe?

Have you gone overbudget, under? Right on track?

Looks good man  expect me to move in once the iceberg I live on melts up here ;)

I will end up spending about 430 to build it.  I could have built it for a lot less, but I upgraded a lot.  All of which I will recoup in the long run with energy savings and tax breaks.
