Title: Commute
Post by: theomen on April 14, 2006, 01:01:10 AM
So how far does everyone commute?  I\'m thinking about taking a job that I\'ll be commuting around 75 miles to everyday, and was wondering what everyone elses commute looked like.

mile or so, at most, by foot.  Then again, I\'m a college student :p

I used to do 50 miles a day, all the way to Maryland to work on-site at client\'s place.  Took the bus to the metro (subway), then walked several blocks and it was just under a 2 hour commute.

75 is borderline crazy but doable depending on transportation and your city\'s traffic.

You\'re young, and you have a job.  Consider moving?  A long commute can literally kill your day, drain your wallet, and affect your work.

not sure about the miles, but i travel about 45 - 50 minutes to work...an hour and some change tops is what i\'m willing to travel for work.

I live 28 miles from where I used to be employed.  I still do stuff there a lot, but at least I can now write the mileage off. It was no big deal, but make sure you get enough money to justify the extra time you spend traveling.

30 miles each way

When I worked in the SJ office, it was about a 40 mile commute one way, then 40 miles back so 80 miles everyday.  Trust me, you do NOT know the horrors of that.  Public transportation, driving, nothing about that commute was ever good or could be spun into a positive thing.  I cracked after 4 months and got transferred to the SF office.  I now get home in 30 minutes at the very most.  The money saved and the time regained are just astronomical.

My company is moving fifteen minutes down the road, so my commute will be like 60, 70 minutes each way.  *shudder*

like going 100 yards in a car is an advantage? lol

I go about 7 miles to school.

Seems like 75 miles is a bit nuts. But like vid said, make sure you get the money to make up for it if you go through with it.

Before I moved it was around 20 miles and I hated it. I can\'t imagine 75 miles , I would go fuckin crazy.

Post by: theomen on April 14, 2006, 05:10:17 PM
my car is brand new and get\'s 38mpg, so fuel isn\'t a huge deal, but still a concern.  Also, the 75 miles takes me around an hour, give or take so it\'s not bumoer to bumper traffic.  I\'m still considering it, and am debating on taking it for the moment being, and wait until I can get something closer and change.

My old commute was about 70 miles each way.  It sucked hardcore.  I put up with it for about a year, then bought a house in the same town as my job.  Now my commute is about 3 miles :)

Well then take what you make and factor it into a 10 hour day rather than an 8 hour day.  See if you still like the hourly rate.

Then add a little bit for mileage on your car to boot;.

You will be giving away over 500 hours of your life a year to your commute.  Bad deal.
Title: Commute
Post by: Ryu on April 14, 2006, 07:34:32 PM
That 500 hours figures into 21 full days or 62.5 eight-hour working days in a single year.  That\'s like working 15 months a year (at an average of 20 working days per month) instead of 12 and believe me, your commute does not earn you paid vacation time.

The last two jobs i had prior to the stroke, were 79 miles each way. Good and bad factors the bad,
First the bad. this is going to drain your wallet big time.
Also the winter comute can suck big time, not sure where you live. But here in the north east, we can get some horrendous snow storms. There were some times it took me 2-3 hours to get home. If you do decide to take this job and you do have the potential for snow or other cruddy weather, consider having a small emergency stash in your wallet, learned this from my dad. Had a $100.00 dollar bill tucked in my wallet if i needed to get a room for the night i was covered. You dont want to sleep in your car in the middle of a storm. No matter what people say backseat or front is not that comfortable, i prefer a nice cozy bed.

On the other hand, i enjoyed the drive cause it allowed me time to cool down, and decommpress. I did not want to bring my work troubles home with me.

Also is your wage going to be worth it, for that i hope it is really good.

Highway our back roads.

If it is highway, then figure out the route to and fro,
backroads wise its good to know the route both ways

If there is a accident you want to be able to bail off the nearest, highway exit.I did those two jobs for a combined 14 years.

Now my comute is say 50 ft tops.

Weigh out your options the pro\'s and cons befoire jumping on this new job.

Only you can decide if this is right for you.

Who knows if i was not disabled i would probably still be doing it.

Paul, you do have it right, my name is fred. When i first joined the forum i was not paying real close attention, to my user name should say fred 44.

And it was the knee, i started out being a delivery driver for a welding supply company. Machines, compressed gas. Any way, late dec 99 we were going through a heat wave. Temps in the high 90\'s daily, till jan 4 right back down to 25 degree\'s blinding snow. Ihad to go over to a paper mill in turners falls mass, to pick up cylinders from a contractor who had just completed a job. Up and down im going on the lift gate. Lowered the gate to the ground for the last cylinder, a big liquid nitrogen tank. When i stepped off the gate i slid on the edge of it left foot first into the snow. Bent my left knee all the way backwards and tore the miniscus,, which is under the kneecap and serves as cushion between the upper and lower leg. Took forever to get surgery, fighting with workmans comp from the time i hurt myself till surgery was jan 4th - june 30th. I was out of work for 8 weeks following the surgery. Then when i got back to work i was told i was no longer needed at that store, and found myself transferred to the west springfield store which is only 8 miles from the house.

I say don\'t take the job unless it pays at least over 40k a year. I had a job that paid me pretty good. I had an hour commute to work. You have to take into account the traffic and your work commute could be well over an hour to and from work.

It will drain you so much. Maybe because I attend college and work. But having to driver an hour or more to get home sucks.

Wow, I imagine most people here live in a huge city, considering their daily commutes...

Does anyone here have to travel out of state to work? I guess alot of people on the east coast do this, is that true?

5-10 minutes to get anywhere in this town. :)

When I was taking a connecting flight from Boston to New York City a guy sitting next to me was taking his daily flight.  He was like, yea, I fly to work in boston every morning and fly back to New York City every night.

Work for me is about 40 some odd miles there and back.  Class is also about 40 there and back.

y,know when i used to live in jersey, gettin ready for work i would turn on the tv to the local traffic & weather channel and would almost always hear.."2 hour delay into the holland tunnel, 2 1/2 hour delay on the gwb, 1 1/2 delay into the lincoln tunnel"...i used to tell the wifey that there would be no way i could drive to N.Y. for work...the traffic to and from the city was just ridiculous...i\'d have to take mass transit and the money would definitely have to be worth it...still i knew people who drove from PA to N.Y. on a daily basis......crazy...

40 miles one way... 80 miles round trip

worth every penny considering the cost of my house was easily 40K cheaper moving an extra 10 minutes north. Not to mention how much traffic I avoid.

If I was to live within 30 miles of my work the cost of a house increase anywhere from 20K to 100K. 10 miles difference is huge out here.

Let me just say that a long commute does suck balls. For a decent job I say it is worth it. I recently had to change my mind on the whole situation. Only because in my field computer science there are no jobs at a 20 minute radius from my home. So I had to think do I want to take this computer job thats 45-60 minutes away from my home.

It\'s either that or wokr somewhere in a job that is not in my field of study. So sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. I know plenty of people that drive and hour to work everyday and thier job sucks.

If the job is in your field I say do it.

Has anybody situation changed yet?....i\'m still at the same job commutin\' just under an hour,...and with these gas prices,...it\'s just gettin\' crazy...i\'m still drivin\' the chevy metro to work...it may do 0-60 in 25 seconds but it\'s great on gas,..:D...but it used to cost me between $16-$17 to fill when gas prices was around $3.28 gallon...now it\'s costin\' me like $22- $23 to fill up,...and the  lexus?....i just throw $45 of premium in there and that\'s it,...my truck(expedition) stays parked in the garage...

Anyway i didn\'t want to turn this into gas thread, i just kind of mentioned it since gas and the commute goes hand in hand,...so has anybody\'s job situation changed? or is it still the same?....

Thankfully in the town I live in at school, I can walk or ride my bike anywhere. Only times I need to drive is to the food store, bank and whenever I need to go home. That gets kind of pricey though. To fill my tank now, its like 55 dollars. Gonna suck come summer when I go down the shore often.

Have about a 15 minute commute through town to work.  Live in a small town, so I don\'t have any sort of public transit to use... but I only have to gas up once every 2 weeks.

About 4 or 5 years ago I had a 1:15 commute each way... WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN.

Yeah before I moved to Baltimore I was carpooling, so every other week I had an hour or so commute, one way.

Now I\'m lucky enough that I can take the train to work. It\'s longer than by car, but it\'s only $16.50 a week.
