Title: Gas Is Tasty
Post by: videoholic on April 18, 2006, 05:08:19 AM
Bought the wifey a new car.  She\'s now pimping an \'06 Nissan Pathfinder.  Nice car.  Logan has a DVD player too which of course makes him happy.  Oh the joy of having a bigger family.   House gets more crowded and we need to buy bigger cars.  oye...

yeah, it\'s great dumping 50 bucks into my wife\'s expedition only to hit 3/4 of a tank... but i\'m not complaining ;)  With 3 kids it\'s barely enough to haul all their shit around in

My boss has a pathfinder.. they are nice.

crikey i love that truck.  As much as I don\'t need anything like that I admire the styling and wide stance it has.  You should post pix of it next to your beamer ;>

ps- you\'re killing manatees everytime you hit the gas pedal :(

Unless I have more than 2 kids, I\'m either gonna jsut have a sedan or a station wagon. Gas is rediculous now to own an SUV. Anyway, if ethanol catches on (which I hope it does. A lot cheaper), then I\'ll get big cars :)

Yeah theomen.  That post added a lot to this thread.

I\'m going to be driving an SUV down to Tenessee later this summer... I\'ve heard that gas is more in the US now than Canada, so I figure that trip is going to be a couple hundred in gas.  Shudder, but you can\'t beat an SUV for travelling/camping comfort.

If I camp, I rough it. I may take the supplies over with a pickup truck but its nothing but a tent and a one burner stove and a fire....then a camping chair, a boombox, some coffee, maybe some take out, inflatable air mattress, a pillow.....yup, roughing it :)

You get absolutely zero benefit from putting 91 in a motor designed for 87.

It burns no cleaner.

It makes your motor run no more better.

It\'s just a fuel that has a higher combustion temperature than 87 so that high compression engines don\'t detonate too early.

You are wasting money.

Unless of course your motor is high compression and designed for 91....

Re: Premium

I always thought it burned a little cleaner, resulting in less gunk building up around the piston rings and stuff, extending the life of the motor (if you plan on driving it for well beyond 100k).

Yea? No?

are you sure about that vid?....not sayin\' you\'re wrong but that has almost been the case when it came to premium gas, that it cleans your engine...and to be honest, i\'ve experienced somewhat of a performance drop when i\'ve used regular as opposed to premium,...this was when i used to have my maxima, and as recently as filling up with regular with the lex*the acceleration just wasn\'t as strong*...i won\'t mention the metro tho, as no matter what you put in that thing, you won\'t feel the difference...

LPG, Burns hotter, Cleaner, cheaper and if it\'s on a straight system, not dual fuel..  More power!!

premium is overrated.

that\'s a good read..soully..i still kinda stand buy the support for premuim tho..only because me personally i\'ve experinced a performance difference,..i rarely read car manuals,..but the one that came with the lex states only to use an octane of 93 and up,...i can\'t really remember what it stated for my maxima...i know for a fact that there was this one time where i\'ve used exxon regular in the maxima and almost after dropping it in the tank, the engine started knocking,,,and from that point on, i\'ve never used regular again, until just recently and only on a few occasions.

i may use regular or mid -grade on the metro, but after usin\' regular on the lex and feeling the difference,..regardless of how high gas prices go, it\'s only going to use premium...i\'ll just have to drive the metro more as that thing gets close to 40 mpg...

Soully, you are useless.  This has absolutely nothing to do with my truck or gas.

Your car may take high octane fuel if it\'s knocking.  Either that or your computer got use to it and adjusted the timing.

Shell adds cleaners in their Premium fuel to clean the engine. The octane rating isn\'t what cleans the engine but what the companies add in.

I like how nobody bothered reading the articles I posted.  Three of them, one of which at least you could say comes from a \'very reliable\' source.

Premium fuel is not worth the price.  Save the 100 bucks a year and buy a good engine cleaner, or get an extra couple of tune-ups for better performance.

Unless you have a high compression engine.  Low Octane will ignite before the spark plug fires in an engine tuned for 91.

No it isn\'t. A lot of gas companies add cleaners to Premium. Shell does it. Pull intoa  shell station and ask.

THey put cleaners into all of the grades.

Post by: FatalXception on April 21, 2006, 07:20:20 PM
Then they add extra (not enough to warrant any price difference) to premium so that they can market as "extra clean" and "pure" power formula... which makes people think it does more than it does... which is nothing more than ignite at higher pressure, which is only useful if your engine is designed for it.

"In most of the industrialized world, including Europe and Japan, pump prices are much higher than in the U.S. – even though the wholesale price is roughly the same. The difference is a heavy tax load those countries impose to discourage consumption.

The Dutch have the dubious distinction of paying the most to fill \'er up, according to the U.S. Deptatment of Energy. (There are various agencies that track gasoline prices, but these are among the most recent figures available.) As of April 10, drivers in the Netherlands were paying the equivalent of about $6.73 a gallon at the pump. The gas itself cost $2.61; the rest  — $4.12 — represented tax. That’s a 158 percent tax. By comparison, the U.S. has the lowest tax on gasoline of any industrialized country: about 15 percent at current prices.

Elsewhere in the industrialized world, the actual cost of gasoline ranges from $2.15 a gallon (France) to $2.61 in the Netherlands. But the after-tax price is $5.80 in France and over $6 a gallon in most other major European countries. Japanese drivers get off relatively easy: taxes there only push pump prices to about $4.50 a gallon.

The cheapest places to top off, not surprisingly, are in countries that produce the most oil. In Iraq, until recently, pump prices were capped at 10 cents a gallon.  Prices have recently risen to nearly 40 cents a gallon — still a bargain compared to the U.S. Iran also keeps pump prices low — less than 35 cents a gallon, according to a recent Reuters survey.

But for a real bargain, drive on down to Venezuela, where President Hugo Chavez has made a name for himself lately by delivering heating fuel to low-income American families at bargain prices. In Venezuela, you’ll pay just 12 cents a gallon to fill your tank."

Brazil has its shit together. I saw this on the History Channel and was intrigued. Since they are like the #1 sugar producer in the world, they use the remnants of the sugar cane and make ethanol from it. Ethanol there is like a buck a gallon whereas their gas is a bit more expensive than us now. All their cars are flex fuel where they can take both. All stations by law require them to have both petrol and ethanol. Most people buy the ethanol because its cheaper and burns just the same. I believe they are almost completely energy self-sufficient. Anyway, its something to Google and maybe we can follow their example.

most trucks hardly get any decent gas mileage. still it\'s nice truck vid...i\'m tryin\' to hold on to the metro, but soon i\'m gonna have to bite the bullet and get an suv,..maybe a used expedition or tahoe...even tho the wifey\'s metro gets close to 40 mpg i\'m sure that number drops on the highway,..cause i\'m sure that number qualifies only if your\'re doin like 55 mph,..which is something i definitely don\'t do on the road,...i do like 65 - 70 so my number for the metro is probably somewhere in the mid 30\'s. anyway nice purchase vid...
