I saw it on Friday night.  Let me preface my impressions by saying that I\'m a pretty big fan of the Silent Hill series - well, the first two anyway.  I\'m halfway through SH3 and may not bother with 4.  Though I\'m not a fan to the extent that I know all the intricate details about Samael and the order of the blah blah blah or whatever...

I don\'t usually go see video game-based movies because they tend to be utter crap.  I saw the trailer for Silent Hill when I saw V for Vendetta a couple months ago.  The ashes falling like snowflakes and the monsters sold me.

So the movie...

Really great looking movie.  They did a great job of capturing the Silent Hill atmosphere - the sirens, the monsters, the camera angles.  They pulled the music right from the game(s).  I do kinda wish they had done something with the music so that it wasn\'t EXACTLY like the game.  Cheapened it a little for me I guess...don\'t really know why.

However...the plot was pretty dumb.  The script and dialogue were ridiculous at times.  Plenty of it was boring.  And there were several occasions of unintentional comedy.  There are plenty of discussions on the web about the story.  Of course there are those who think it\'s brilliant and say the haters just don\'t understand.  But let me tell you - it\'s dumb.  This movie had so much potential.  I was disappointed.  A few of the scenes are great and the gore is pretty entertaining.

And Sybil Bennett is smokin\' hot.

Pretty much what I thought of it, great visuals and frightening at times but it could have been a lot more so. Never really played the game so dont know if its really supposed to be a horror-ish type genre but it was really more of a thriller at some points with added dumbness.

Meh.

As someone who thinks the series is over-rated, I enjoyed it. There was a few things I didn\'t like, but for the most part, I thought it was a damn fine videogame translation.

The opening scene of the movie with the little girl sleep walking near the crater was about 30 minutes from my house :D

Same with many other scenes of the movie. It seemed like they were filiming at different places all 30 minutes away in every direction.

Kind of cool to see ur home town up on the big screen for the first time.

I enjoyed it. The visuals couldn\'t get much more perfect but agree on the story/dialogue.

If they can tweak the story better then I say theres still hope for the franchise (if there is one).

The ending kind of sucked for me though. Unless that\'s how the games usually end... I suppose

I enjoyed this film, and I thought it was much better than I expected it to be. All the "legit" critics have uniformally torn it apart, but if you read their comments, it appears most of them didn\'t understand it. Seems strange to me, because it\'s not that hard to understand. The atmosphere, sound and music was outstanding. The production / set design was really mind blowing. Way way beyond my expectations. Visual effects were top notch. I didn\'t see ANY visual effects shots that were outright failures. All of them worked perfectly in my opinion.

The script was average. There was nothing really over and above the basic necessities, and the story was not surprising. To expect a modern horror film to break new ground and deliver a truly surprising an unexpected story is like waiting for the second coming of the messiah. After wading through so much crap in this genre, my expectations have been lowered. Now, as long as the script is at least average, and isn\'t truly stupid and childish, I\'m reasonably satisfied.

Overall, the acting performances were average; nothing outstanding. The greatest weakness of this film was that so much of the dialogue depends on a child actress. A screenwriter should have known what a risk it is to put that much dialogue in the mouth of a child who won\'t have the skill to deliver it convincingly. That is my primary overriding complaint about the film. What a shame because it could have been handled much better by moving that dialogue to a different character, or revealing it in a different way.

***** SPOILER ***** (The spoiler tags don\'t work anymore!)

The ending (the FINAL scene) was really great in my opinion. I think Roger Ebert complained about it, but he must have been expecting more closure. I went into this from a game player\'s perspective, and I was totally expecting a setup for Silent Hill 2. It was unsettling, and it worked great for me.

i just went to see this yesterday,..and i gotta be honest,..i agree with core on this one,..if you truly look at it from a gamer\'s perspective, they nailed the atmosphere perfectly, both worlds...the fog & the nightmarish world,..the monsters,...which were a combination of silent hill 1 & 2 were done with picture perfect precision,...and pyramid head?..he was done justice as well,..the movie started off strong and kept a decent pace up until the latter half of the movie where the movie is kinda forced to tell a bit of a background story...

Again core nailed it when he states it\'s huge risk putting a child as a storyteller, but i flet it didn\'t hurt the overall experience,...i felt this flick could\'ve been so much better, but what i seen yesterday, for a videogame translation to movie,..they did a superb job,...and the ending...unless you are aware of the silent hill series,..most silent hill games end in a weird way,..so even tho people in the theatre was like "aw c\'mon wtf?"...even i was a bit dissapointed in the ending, but not because it sucked, but moreso because i really wasn\'t ready for it to end,..and because i know how silent hill games are, that ending suited the movie perfectly and opens the door for another story to be told....
