May 4, 2006 - At SEGA\'s pre-E3 event in late April, IGN grabbed its first look at the newest version of Sonic the Hedgehog. It was a good thing too, since Sonic is a tough nut to crack and an easy one to break -- especially following his re-emergence from the rather somber Saturn days to the initially exciting Dreamcast Sonic Adventures revitalization and the mind-numbingly odd Shadow the Hedgehog (a dark version of Sonic with guns). Think about it for a second, after his stunning debut as a 2D furry mascot with an attitude in the Genesis days, Sonic has wavered to and fro in the 3D landscape, an environment that\'s not his natural habitat, per se. That\'s why, when we watched the first live, in-game footage of the new Sonic, we knew that SEGA was listening to its critics.
According to SEGA, the key to re-introducing Sonic on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is focusing on the impact of his speed and sense of control from the early Genesis days (and the wild aerial jumps introduced in Sonic Adventures). In its 15-year anniversary, SEGA\'s new Sonic is one in which crisp high-res visuals, 60 frame-per-second gameplay, and an evolution of the hedgehog\'s general form.

Sonic is no longer the stubby, kid-like bullet with blue spiky fur. While retaining his general appearance -- smirky smile, giant blue head spikes, and classic white and red outfit, replete with white gloves -- SEGA has grown Sonic into an adult by means of a few simple techniques. The team has basically stretched his legs and arms to relatively human proportions. Thus, Sonic still looks just like always did but now he\'s about 5\'10". In fact, all of the characters we saw, Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) and Sonic\'s new nemesis, a white hedgehog, retained relatively human-sized heights. The effect is a little alarming at first. Sonic looks like a skinny dude in a mascot suit now, or at least when he\'s standing still. Once he starts running, it\'s all different. Even so, you\'ll need to take second and third glance to get accustomed to his new look.
The hedgehog\'s new game follows a simple narrative premise. In a pristine kingdom holding a royal family, a certain Princess Elise retains a chaos emerald... and a deep secret. In an inevitable turn of events, Dr. Robotnik learns of the emerald and kidnaps the princess and thus the emerald. Sonic is compelled to retrieve her and the precious stone, of course, but the new rival, basically a cream-colored furry that looks remarkably like Sonic, appears in a following cutscene. Looking down from a towering hill into a village, the mystery animal proclaims, "I\'ve finally found it, the Iblis Trigger." The Iblis Trigger, we\'re told, is Sonic and this new rival is going to cause him great pain due to vaguely revealed supernatural powers. You\'ll also be able to play as the new character as a twist.

It\'s all a little cryptic at this point, honestly, but Sonic,no doubt, has to rescue the princess, fight this new punk hedgehog, defeat Eggman (like always), and set the record straight on who the bad-assiest hedgehog in town really is. We all know it, but in a world of superhero hedgehogs and all-powerful emeralds and techno-savvy fat men, well, things just work a little bit differently. You just have to go with the flow.
Sonic\'s new game is split into two types of gameplay: action and town stages. The action stages are gorgeously laid out sections of creative track, 3D aerial sections, loops, jumps, racing sections, and platforms floating in space, in which Sonic must ping-pong through, race as fast as possible, and defeat simplistic enemy AI to reach a final goal ring. If you\'ve played any of Sonic games at all, you\'ll notice the camera is closer and lower to the ground, helping to create a better sense of speed. The paths feature split sections, meaning that you can pick entirely unique branches, each with their own surprises.
Luckily our hero appears to move with quick arcade-like controls and simple mechanics. He can walk and run freely, burst into a sprint, slide-stop, spin-attack enemies in air, and perform switch-stance skateboarding-like slides along invisible aerial paths. He can run onto walls Shinobi-style, grab onto nearby eagles for transportation, and quickly alternate from one action to another without a hitch. The action stages are a mix of familiar Sonic Adventure-style 3D platforms, mixed with new designs, aerial maneuverings, and Sonic moves, and they all take place while running at full speed. You\'ll still find speed bumpers, zip sections, breaking boxes, rings to collect, double air jumps, and danger zones.

The other type of stage is the town stage, which SEGA hid from us so we would come by its booth at E3. Sneaky! The town stages are apparently open and free-roaming too, giving Sonic the ability to mingle with other characters and explore and do things that heroic blue hedgehogs normally do (I wonder if there are chili dog vendors in this new town..?).
This all leads us to E3. Sonic the Hedgehog (temporary name) looks fast, colorful, and like good arcade-style fun. We\'re hoping the town stages make an excellent complement to the action levels. We\'ll soon find out!

The texture rez on building looks crappy, but i doubt it will detract ingame.
Somehow these screens do impress me, unlike all other 3D Sonic games.
-
There\'s so much going on in the environment and I\'m sure with the speed you\'ll be going through the game, you\'ll probably miss a lot of the scenery. The 2nd video shows some impressive lighting and day-to-night changing environment effects. I want to see videos from the newest build, though.
-
I miss the old school sonic on Genesis. Can\'t replace those. Haven\'t played any of the newer versions though. I\'ll probably give it a try though.
-
So pointless...all 3D Sonic games since the first one have been mediocre. Even the first one had infinite problems but was decent.
F Sonic Sega, make me a Flash game!
-
Titan:Whatever you do dont play Sonic Heros. Especially the PS2 version.
Sonic Adventure 1&2 I think are the best 3D sonic games
-
Maybe this one will NOT suck. There\'s always a chance. :)
-
Allow me,
1. 2D Sonic with hi-res graphics
2. ???
3. Profit

That would be sweet. Side-scrollers aren\'t too common these days. :(

looks like every other 3d sonic game...
yawn

And it probably will appeal to nostalgic gamers, especially if they marketed to them specifically.
-
I\'m a bit nostalgic with the Sonic games. I keep hoping for something awesome...and end up getting disappointed every time.
-
What skrewed Sonic big time for me in the 3D versions was the fact that they didnt give you the same freedom to use Sonic\'s speed as much as in the 2D versions.
The camera playied tricks on you, there were too many obstacles in your way you couldnt avoid easily without sucrificing a lot from your speed, and many times you even hesitated to speed up because it was easy to end up yourself off the platform and die.

I\'m the same with the Mario games. It just doesn\'t feel like a game that should be 3D. The old scroll screen games seem that they should only stay that way. I dunno.
-
Super Mario 64 was just as impactful as any game that\'s ever been released when it came out. They just don\'t hold up well since something usually comes along and eclipses it or in Mario\'s case, the concept is rehashed by virtually everyone.
Mario 64 does hold up decently actually though.

I thought the first 3D Mario was awesome, but it\'s been a little eh ever since then.
-
Well it was the first proper free roaming platform game. There were some very lazy efforts on the PSX before it like Cheezy(I think thats what it was called for real) and it was a total crap.
Wasnt Mario64 3 years in development before release? Quite an achievement. Although I must say the camera and the analog stick were a pain in the ass for me.
Since after a succesful game like Mario64 everyone starts copying and improving on that game\'s ideas I think its hard to see a platform game having the impact Mario64 had back in summer 1996 now.
And usually a pioneer game has many problems on top of the great new features since its was the first to ever implement them.
Mario64 was like a revolution. Now all we can get is an evolution unless someone finds a brilliant idea no one has ever thought of. Something which is very hard. Lets see what the Wii will do
I am positive Sonic can make an impact of some sort if its done proberly in the platform genre. It can probably be the first platform game to offer unmatched speed and platforming action never seen before in other platform games(not counting the previous 3D Sonic games). But only if done proberly.
I am sure if Sega put all the talent and effort in a Sonic game and spent a couple of years or 3 they would have done wonders with it.
But they dont set high standards or high goals for their games anymore, unlike in the past.
The appropriate controls I think can make Sonic a very cool, enjoyable platform game I would like to call the Devil May Cry of the Platform genre :D (I have a few ideas in my mind)

You mean Sunshine? The only 3d mario released since then?

Yeah...Sunshine...the only 3D Mario released since then. You\'re quick.
-
Unlike Sonic, I think Mario has some legs in 3D, but they kind of lost their way with Sunshine, in my opinion.
The retro areas were a nice touch, but oddly placed. And the water gimmick didn\'t do much for me. It was fun enough, but it didn\'t feel like Mario.
Maybe the collecting is passe. They should look at the formula used for Conker\'s Bad Fur Day and make a linear platformer that doesn\'t require mind-numbing collecting. Split it up into levels of some sort and you might have something.
With the weird Wii controls, the next Mario game will be hit or miss. Who knows what they\'ll try to put over the new controller...

That should be interesting. Since nostalgic gamers feel dissapointed about Mario or Sonic not feeling the same in 3D it would be interesting to see how they will feel when they get their hands on a Mario that plays unlike, not just a 2D Mario, but unlike anything.
I think if Nintendo makes it a great game it will be loved as a unique platform game. Not as a next gen Mario that will satisfy their nostalgia. They will still miss the old Mario. Despite that I dont thing they will be dissapointed if its a great game. It will just be a unique great new Mario game.
-
Sunshine sucked - I took off work for that game and was so dissapointed. I think it would of been decent if not for that water nonsense.
Sonic Adventure was actually great, I remember it being the showcase title for the Dreamcast and you could feel the speed when you ran over the bridge and the whale destroyed it. Awesome game.

Agreed. I don\'t know what the point of the water thing was. Definitely could\'ve lived without that.

Yeah. I hope the "feel" of this new Sonic game is like the original on Dreamcast. All the others have suffered since then. And Sonic Heroes...I won\'t even get into that. *shrugs*
