Everyone knew that Sony would come out swinging eventually. Every Sony press conference is the same. Kaz, in all his wooden head glory hops on stage and goes through the motions like a depressed, used cars salesman. A few Powerpoint slides here, some graphics showing just how much more awesome their plastic box is to the other guys plastic box and then, just when you think it\'s all said and done, they drop their bombs.
And as expected, they dropped some bombs. Only this time, instead of going into the following day to see how the survivors are dealing with the wreckage, we\'re staring straight back at Sony and the damage they did to themselves. The bombs, for once, backfired. Damage was dealt, but for the most part, there was a severe, premature detonation.
The conference, for all intents and purposes, was a disaster. From an atrocious looking demo of Gran Turismo 4 running in high definition (Why did we need to watch this for 10 minutes?) to an almost pitiful Kaz Hirai almost begging for applause when showing off the original Ridge Racer running on a PSP ("It\'s Ridge Racer. . . RIDGE RACER!").
With the exception of the absolutely stunning Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer -- a title that I, even as a Metal Gear fan really wasn\'t interested in until that moment, everything was a dud. And yet, they managed to top themselves.
It would should have been the single moment in time where we could pinpoint exactly where Sony would continue their reign upon the console throne, we were thrown for a loop. We were punked.
Somewhere in Los Angeles, a smile crept slowly across the face of Microsoft\'s Peter Moore. No longer would the term "Tard Pack" be synonymous with Microsoft and his XBOX 360.
For now, Sony has managed to one up them. Presenting, The Playstation 3 Tard Pack. Yes, for only $499 dollars, you too can own a crippled Blu-Ray player, complete with a lack of much touted WiFi connectivity (Peace out wireless PSP interaction) and memory stick slots that would not only make way for a sort of open source "memory card" solution, but also the "Ultimate media center" angle goes out the window too.
As for the tilt-and-tumble addition to the Dual Shock -- Oh. While I\'m thinking about information that Sony forgot to mention during their conference (Yet, did manage to slip into their official press release), the Dual Shock now lacks that which the name was coined after, being vibration. Regardless, I already had my word on that.
I will hand it Sony. They most certainly made sure that today, being Tuesday, will be very, very interesting. I\'m a bit frightened that Reggie might burst onto stage tomorrow morning and drink the blood of slaughtered barn yard creatures, but regardless, Nintendo has to respond to this revelation. And as for Microsoft, well, they\'ve quite frankly never looked better at this point

The $500 \'core\' version of PS3 is a pitiful joke. I can\'t believe they followed Microsoft\'s horrible example. I can live without \'rumbling\' in my controller. I did so with the PS2. My controller never vibrated and I never cared. The xbox360 core version can be called a \'tard pack\' as well.
But the hater who wrote this article needs to realize 2 things,

That depends who you asks. At this point in time, there are more 360 games available and more in development. This could change, of course, but not over night.

Ahm....Why didnt they mention FF13? Or Heavenly Sword? And RR was the PSP version that they showed?
What about the other games like Naughty Dog\'s?

i predicted sales for GC, PS2, and xbox before they were launched.
i was accurate.
PS3 will be 1st in sales with a mild profit aided by blu-ray royalties and total dominance in 3rd party support.
xbox 360 will be in 2nd place in total worldwide sales (and debt) again this generation. HD-DVD will flop.
wii will be last in sales, but nintendo will rake in the profits.
thru the first half of 2007, the PS2 will be the strongest selling console. then the PS3 will take over after a price drop.
feel free to bet on this, and quote me years down the road.
personally, i\'m not buying any of the 3 at retail. if i can get them cheap used, i will, as i\'ve become a collector over the decades.

Yeah but still they had good impressions of the games and controller. Unlike 1UP that were dissapointed about everything.
Gears of War is the only game I ve seen so far that impresses me as much as the PS3 games I ve seen. And its still PS3\'s first gen games. And yet I mostly see still pictures of GOW than videos.
I dont know if 360 can do anything the PS3 has shown (and I am not refering to static detail), but even if they are technically both as powerful I d still go for the PS3. They were more interesting atleast for me.
MS conference will be the final judgement if MS will steal my attention.

When MS cuts features out of the 360 before launch, everyone jumped all over them... Sony cuts features and it\'s just dandy ... Gotta love that about this place.

Yes, it\'s called damage control. I don\'t see how anyone can even downplay the Wii right now. It\'s a system, it\'s cheap, and it has good games. What\'s the matter? Oh that\'s right, we gotta make it look bad so this other system won\'t.

No. It happens to have games we like, performance that impresses, a nice feature on the controller, BR drive, a standard HD etc on top of the bad things like the price and the fact that one version has features the other one doesnt.
The 360 didnt have any of these.
The price and 2 different versions just ruins some of the excitement but its not enough to overshadow the other features

So anyone else watching this Nintendo presentation? The damn controller works great, people are playing it and it looks fun.
Also, the standard HD feature is moot. Developers still allow caching regardless of the availability.

The controller is actually playable. Some games I did not care about, some games just seemed like total awesome. The new Link game supports the controller.

- Red Steel
- Metroid Prime: Corruption
- Legend of Zelda
Those four will definitely be the top games for the console. Fucking awesome previews for them. They did not mention a new Super Smash Brothers game.
The Microsoft conference will be on in three hours.

I never argued that franchises was bad - it is how the franchises are handled. If the game uses the Wii controller to make the franchise more fresh, then more power to them. That is what I\'ve been saying all along.
FRANCHISES = Great.
Franchises that never change = BAD.
How hard is that to understand?

Ok let me see... PS3.....Wii.....Now if MS manages to pick my interest with their conference I ll be a damn dissapointed gamer. I cant have all three

$250 isn\'t cheap? But $600 is worth it?
I\'ve heard it all now. How cheap do you think the Wii should friggin\' be? Not debating the price of the PS3, just not sure what you consider "cheap".

You could sense the good audience feedback.
...but, bashing the PS3 value pack is not entirely justified :
In PAL regions there are many ppl who don\'t have and/or
don\'t plan to buy a HDMI compliant screen. Why ?
Becuz VAT makes those screens expensive and the PAL format
is by nature already very very good.
Also, it will be a 100 Euros cheaper than the 60Gb version,
so that\'s a bigger difference than the 100 USD for
the USA PS3\'s.
I\'m not saying the PS3 value pack is a superdeal, but it\'s
a very reasonable compromise. Sony\'s press conference
was not bad but not super either. This is not all that relevant.
There is enough proof by now that PS3 has the right \'ingredients\'
to become a succes without even suffering from \'PS2 snags\'
like the whole PS2 jaggies affair.

PS3 just picks more my interest. Got a problem with that? After I get one I ll wait for Wii to get cheap. I wont pay 250 on top of the 500 I might pay for a PS3. Yes I said might because its not 100% sure I ll get one at launch.

Very true. I wonder how we in Europe will respond to it. I am very positive that people are more excited with the PS3 than the 360 here but I dont know if its enough to make all of us want to pay more for a PS3 than a 360.
People here love Tekken, FF, MGS, GT and the likes. 360 doesnt have a franchise as powerful as these yet.

Marketing and word of mouth will dictate whether the average consumer buys into the concept.
And knowing Nintendo, that leaves it to word of mouth.

They\'ve said for quite some time that they are targeting non-gamers in hopes of creating a new audience. They\'ll no doubt appease their current fanbase, and if the DS is any indication then they\'ll bring in a new audience (of which includes 18-34 year olds).
I haven\'t checked in a while but I bet the DS is STILL outselling the PSP. Go Nintendo Go.

nintendo is smart enough to make games that are geared towards portability.
handheld users want to turn the unit on and played for x amount of minutes.
the PSP almost makes this difficult with longer load times, and titles that are mainly ported from the PS2.
when i ride the bus, i play Bejeweled on my cell phone, because i can close the phone when i get off (saves my game automatically), and i can then continue the next day.
sony did it mostly wrong with the PSP

When I say average consumer, I mean people who don\'t follow games. These people haven\'t heard of PS3 or Wii yet. The hype machine is just getting under way for those who don\'t pursue it like we do.

i just read a report the other day that over 50% of all adults actively play video games.

Heh, I guess we have different opinions on the average consumer. But where I am at work (secretly visiting a PS2 forum half the day), I could ask anyone "What do you think about the Wii controller?" or "Tell me what you know about the next PlayStation." and I might get an answer from one or two people.
The average consumer won\'t know until it\'s on tv, in stores, at their friends house and reports of the holiday shopping crisis are on the news.

I\'m with Eik on this one. The average consumer knows nothing about E3 right now. I\'m at work also and I\'ve mentioned E3 , PS3 and Wii to people and all I get is blank stares. Other than the geeky crowd (us), no one cares about this stuff until it starts hittnig the TV commercials and holiday season rolls around. Something that may help Nintendo is people are strapped for cash during the holidays, launch cheap, throw some killer franchises in = mass sales.
On the other hand, Sony has the advatange of brand name and the whole "expensive = good" mentality that America has.

the IT dept i work in is brimming with misinformation on the 3 new consoles.
then again, we were playing GRAW on the corporate conference room project earlier discussing the finer points of no anisotropic filtering.

the price is pretty steep for a console, but the more i think about it..i\'m sure come launch date this thing is gonna fly off the shelves. i probably won\'t get one at launch, but i know i will definitely get one,..hell people said they wouldn\'t pay for gas if it went over $2.00..low and behold gas is over 3.00 and rising...yes i know gas is a necessity but the way people are spending money these days, even with the economy and gas prices, people are still spending money on the latest and greatest... and even tho the price will be a concern for some, i feel for the majority, it won\'t be an issue...
i\'m getting a bit tired now, but the more i think about it, the more i think sony probably could have released this thing at 399 and be real competitive or be even more aggressive and release it at 299...i wonder what would happen if they released the top model at 299? i know it won\'t happen, but i kinda feel they squandered a bit with the price and as some people have stated, graphic capabilities are about the same on both systems so what is sony really offereing other than blu- ray? i honestly don\'t care about wifi or any of that other stuff as long as it was backwards compatiable i was pretty much satisfied.
i hate to sound like a broken record but all that superior tech means nothing it the games are the same on both systems. i\'m not afraid to admit i\'m more of a sony fan, and i wanna see them do well, but i really haven\'t seen anything that tops gears of war, and while i know that graphics aren\'t everything, i just don\'t like the fact that sony followed microsoft\'s example of two different consoles,...sony really had the opportunity to shine in price and really destroy the competition, but who knows, it seems sony ends up being over-ambitious in trying to be the all in one system...man i\'m gettin tired...i think i\'m startin to just yap about nothin\' as a matter of fact i know i\'am..5:20 am....
