Title: The greatest show on Earth - World Cup 2006 thread
Post by: Cerberus on May 26, 2006, 03:02:11 AM
Only 2 weeks to go now, it\'s about time someone made a world cup thread.

My early prediction:

Brazil to win, possible dark horses are netherlands and spain.

England might (slim shot with the players at hand) get to the semis\'s, but no further. Germany, again semi\'s, france will be lucky to get even that far.

If I was a betting man, I\'d put a couple of quid on the yanks getting ko\'d at the group stages

GO ITALY!

i dont pay any attention to soccer though. cept ESPN had a segment on the michael jordan of soccer (the guy from brazil), so ill predict them to win.

Spain is not even pass the first round. They\'re pathetic. They always are. And if they arent referees will make their job.

It\'s good to have digital tv to watch the whole world cup and other 400 channels.

Well, it all kicks offf today, Germany play Costa Rica, then Poland play Equador.

My prediction is:

Germany 4-0 Costa Rica
Poland 3-0 Equador

Can\'t wait for England\'s game tomorrow.

i watched the poland game..equador\'s D completely owned them. poland had a few good runs to the goal in the second half (only saw the beginning of it since i had to work)but the defenders kept deflecting it. Was pretty fun to watch, but im an american so 2 shots to 7 at the beginning of the second half just looks damn wrong, lol. Should be 32 shots to 40 :D.

have you ever been slide-tackled in the ankles with studs? I have, it fucking hurts.

I\'m not saying a lot of them are not soft twats, they are, most notably the itallians, but if you get clocked on the ankle/shin/knee, you know about it.

my prediciton about the yanks not getting past the group stage seems to be coming to fruition, I can\'t see them beating italy. I hope they do because the italians are wankers, but I don\'t see it

you kidding me? i watched the whole italian game and only a few of them pussed out like that. I mostly see it from any south american team or mexico.

i asked my brother the same question about how they whine all the time trying to get a yellow card.

aparently, fifa are clamping down on that sort of thing, the refs have been told that if anyone goes down and gestures to the ref to issue a yellow, they should be booked instead.

Can\'t remember which match it was, but it\'s already happened, one player was fouled, he got up and ran up to the ref crying for the other player to be booked, he got booked instead. I pissed my sides laughing.

It\'s a good rule change if you ask me

PS. I\'m not kidding you, the itallians are rife for that sort of thing, more in domestic football that international, they are stereotyped as falling down if you so much as even blow on them.

You\'re right about the south americans though, they are some of the more skillful divers/frauds in the game, I recall diego simeone using all his skill to get beckham sent off in 98 for tapping him on the leg as he walked past.

the bastard went down like he\'d been shot

For example take Manu Ginobili from the San Antonio Spurs.  Italian family apparently, but he\'s from Argentina.

He\'s a basketball player, but he acts like a "footballer."  Always flopping and pretending to be injured.  Bring out the magic sponge...

in basketball, dwayne wade takes the cake for pretending to be injured. every time i see a heat game, wade is falling down, gets up and limps around with a fake face of "oo that hurt..but im so strong and determined..."..then hes running around again.

i mean..he had a damn commercial about him falling down

watched the france v switzerland game earlier, the frogs were lucky to get a draw, a very average performance.

I missed the best bit of the match though and didn\'t realise it. After the game had ended, the french players were arguing with each other.

I laughed....

Saw the brazil v croatia match too, another average performance, but brazil showed that even if they play shite, they can still turn on the flair in an instant.

If brazil are going to lose it, it will be due to another lacklustre performance like that.

I saw someone on yahoo earlier who thinks germany could win, I don\'t know what german team he was watching, but it obviously wasn\'t the one that played costa rica on friday.

The USA is fucked. Have you seen who they play? ITALY AND CZECHS?!

Brazil...I\'m getting tired of them. It\'s like, all their country does is breed soccer players.

the germany/poland game has just finished, and it looks like the poles are going to be the first ones going home, even before the australians.

I still don\'t think germany will do much, they played a polish team that seems to be in turmoil, poland made germany look better than they are if you ask me.

PS. I think adan was sandbagging about spains chances, they played earlier and they shit all over the ukraine.

If that\'s what they play like when they are playing bad, I\'d hate to see what they can do when they are playing well

watching sweden vs paraguay

sweden has insane passing skills..whenever teams chip it it just seems like theyre dumping it and hoping for the best, but theres always a teamate there to get the pass. Cept when they get to the goal they cant get a shot.

watching it myself, just seen paraguay get out of jail, similar to the clearance terry made foe england earlier.

speaking of england, overall they dominated I think, especially in the second half. They just couldn\'t hit the spot though.

When rooney came on, it opened the game right up, there was a free flowing tempo to the game.

In total, they had 25 shots at goal, 8 of which were on target. They should have had at least 3, with possibly as many as 4-5.

I think there\'s plenty of room for improvement, lampard wasn\'t clinical enough in his finishing as he should be, he had chances, the sort you shouldn\'t be squandering at that level.

Gerrard lennon & terry stood out from the crowd for me.

Considering he has just come back from injury, I think rooney did himself no harm whatsoever, a solid performance. Even though he wasn\'t quite up to match fitness, he ran his bollocks off.

When he hits peak form, he might cause a lot of problems for the opposition. I just hope someone with a grudge singles him out and tries go take him out.

It\'s a pity owen is so far off the mark though, he\'s clearly not there, with him and rooney up front, fully fit, they could run rings round a lot of defences.

That lanky fucker crouch did the business I suppose in getting that goal, but I think a defence with any nouse about them will tie him up in knots, I can see him becoming less and less effective attacking-wise as the competition goes on.

US played a great game, too bad that fucktard in the center they call a ref fucked them hard in the ass, I have never seen so many bullshit calls in my life, he called fouls on the US like he was a Muslim extremist or some shit, both Red cards on the US were not justified, the guy who elbowed McBride should have been thrown out, I can\'t stand Italy as they play like fags and flop all over the place!!! I think if the US can play like today they will devour Ghana, Czech did not play well at all and Ghana came out and played brilliant and deserved to win there match.

england were shit again, I don\'t know wtf they are doing sometimes.

I mean, on paper, the likes of sweden shouldn\'t be causing problems for england, but england haven\'t beaten them for the best part of 40 years.

England have some of the best players in the world at their disposal.... Terry, cole (a), fedinand (when he\'s not being a tarty bitch) in defence, gerrard, lampard, beckham (arguably the best feeder/free kicker/corner taker in europe if not the world) & cole (j) in midfield, rooney (and up until last night) owen in attack, we should be doing better than we are, we should be shitting all over teams like sweden, but england\'s players don\'t play at the top of their game at the same time, you only ever get 2 or 3 that play their bollocks off, and the rest just plod along.

Joe cole was the shining light for england last night, I think he\'s probably been the outstanding player for us so far, this world cup could make him, I can see his stock going up massively during the competition.
Dispite me not thinking he\'s worthy of a place in the england line-up, I think owen hargreaves ran his bollocks off last night, he did more than his fair share of the spade work, and because of it, I think he\'s earned his place in the starting line-up against ecuador.
Rooney was also everywhere the action was, but he was still lacking match fitness, and contrary to what he said after the game, he was pissed off to have been subbed.
Once he gets full match fitness, he\'ll do damage against england\'s opponents.
Gerrard made an immediate effect when he came on, scoring the goal that put us 2-1 up.

Towards the end, england showed their achilles heel, letting in a goal due to piss-poor defending.
It\'s sad to see owen out, he\'s had a shit world cup, and I had predicted him to shine against sweden.
Looks like that one injury will result in a major shake-up of englands structure on the pitch, I wouldn\'t be wanting to partner crouch with rooney, especially in the later stages, as I have already stated, I can see crouch becoming less effective as the better teams come along.
He needs space to perform well, a good defence will tie him in knots.

I don\'t see ecuador causing any problems, assuming england don\'t beat themselves, they should cruise past them.
Can\'t say I\'m as optimistic for the matches after that though, we\'ll just have to wait and see......

argentina v mexico, best game of the championship so far for me. Best team lost as well.

Another shocking ref performance too if you ask me, he was almost like argentina\'s 12th man, heinze should have walked for his last defender foul, and there were numerous other incidents that he let go without so much as even a warning.

Mexico deserved that win. They outplayed Argentina in so many levels, they kept them in check and in the end it was horrible calls made by the ref that won them the game. The most crucial was when there were two Mexican and Two Argentina\'s players by Argentina\'s goal, the goalie passed the ball to his teammate, Pardo(the mexican player) stole the ball and it was and almost assured goal...the Argentinan player INTENTIALLY FOULED HIM. What did the ref do?? Oh, just a yellow card. That was a clear expulsion in my opinion.

I agree with you one hundred percent. Mexico is my team but I can assure you I\'m not excusing their lost. They lost because of the referee, it\'s not an excuse it\'s a fact!

I hate Argentina. I said it before and I\'ll forever keep hating them.

I\'m rooting for Portugal now.

Refs suck ass.

your full of shit, for starters, mexico was at most on par with argentina, and you fail to mention the fact that argentina scored a goal in the last minutes of the game that got cancelled for no reason.

ps. I refuse to comment on the portugal Vs. Netherlands game, except that they should should shoot Figo on sight.

Argentina, for starters, could not get their game going. Mexico\'s defense almost completey threw their gameplan off. It was a good stalemate and mistakes where the turn of the game...mistakes such as losing the ball so close to your goal and having to foul the opposing player. It wasn\'t cancelled for no reason, the side ref thought he was offsides. Either way, most of the calls where to soft on Argentina.

Portugal and Netherlands was a hell of a fight. After all of those expulsions, Netherlands just didn\'t want to win. It had the upperhand TWICE!!

england were fucked out of that match by one of the wankiest refs I\'ve ever seen, and 11 drama queens.

Every one of the portuguese players should get oscars for their perfomances, none more so than cristian ronaldo.

In the past, I\'ve always liked portugal, and I always throw my support behind the team that knocks england out.

Not this time though, they can all go and fuck themselves, I\'m throwing my support behind brazil.

Hell, I think I\'d even support gemany before portugal now.

Best team lost again today, and with a man down for no reason at all.

I agree the Rooney thing was a bit weak, but it\'s not like he was working his magic anyway.

All in all I think the two teams were pretty equal. But I would have figured England to win on penalty.

he wasn\'t on fire at all, but that\'s not really the point.

A player less is always a disadvantage, no matter how well he is/is not playing.

He got sent off for pushing the portuguese player, nothing else.

He caught the player square in the bollocks with his foot alright, but that\'s not why he got the red card, the ref didn\'t even see that. And anyway, it wasn\'t intentional.

It took 2 portuguese players to get the ball off him in the lead up to the red card, they were bouncing off him like flies off novelty rubber dog shit. They didn\'t get so much as a warning for their acting.

Go Germany, I thought the foul from Rooney didn\'t deserve a red and TV made a big deal out of it in the States, dude was going for a ball and he went to step down how was he suppose to know the guy on the ground behind him\'s nads were dangling out there for him to step on them??? Argentinan ref was pretty ghey and evident that he would take any chance he got to screw England out of the match. As much as people hate Beckham I feel bad for him and always think he gets a bad rap for no reason.

Beckham has quit as captain, which to be honest, I\'m not that bothered by, I always thought he was he was too selfish at times to be a great captain, he was a good captain, but not much more than that.

I always thought gerrard or terry would have made a better captain.

On the subject of rooney/ronaldo once more, I wouldn\'t be surprised if rooney smacks the shit out of ronaldo when he next sees him at old trsfford, I know I\'d be considering it if I was him. Screw the possible fine, it would be worth it just to chin the prick.

I think this could prove to be the beginning of the end for him at old trafford, he\'s made no secret of wanting to leave for real madrid during the world cup, this could be the catalyst for him leaving england.

If I was ferguson, I wouldn\'t pick him anyway, he won\'t be in favour with several united players now, I\'m make him sit on the bench until his contract runs out.

im sorry but you guys bitch italy overreacts to hits? 11 minutes into the game and iv seen 4-5 german players act like bitches and no italian players.

Maybe they had a history of it but i havent seen any of that from italy this year. Except from totti..hes probably one of the most overractors which makes the whole team look bad..but hes good so whatever.

Italy kind of worries me though. Like 60% of the field (the middle) they get completely dominated, but they are really good on both ends of the field. So it seems like any time germany can score since theyll be able to dominate the middle of the field, then italy just has its random run to the goal (which has been working, but germany is better than the other teams theyve faced)

WOOOOHOOOOO

all i have to say is that it worked :D. I wouldve been pissed if australia was the one that did it. Just the way it is.

Blame the refs gullibility. Its the same as baseball..if you throw a pitch outside that is usually a ball and the umpire is calling it a strike, you keep throwing to the outside.

there\'s no excuse for violent conduct like that in front of the biggest audience in any sport.

There are rumours that he called ZZ\'s mum a whore, but he shouldn\'t have reacted the way he did. He shouldn\'t have got himself sent off like that, most people are going to remember him for that 1 loss of control.

Had it been me, I would have mentally talked myself into biding my time (for the sake of the rest of the team more than anything), then when the match is over. and all the camera\'s are turned off, I would have followed him down the tunnel and would have chinned the fucker.

At least that way there\'s no publicity backlash with the shot on the front of every paper, and on the screen of every television in the civilized world.
