Resistance Interview at 1up.
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?pager.offset=2&cId=3151083
For those at work:
When it was originally shown to the world under the name I-8 at Sony\'s E3 2005 press conference, Insomniac\'s debut PlayStation 3 game surprised the audience with a much grittier and more serious appearance than fans had come to expect from the Spyro and Ratchet & Clank developer.
But as Insomniac is happy to point out, the company actually started making games with a PlayStation 1 first-person shooter called Disruptor, and now that I-8 has come a bit more into the spotlight -- having been officially revealed as Resistance: Fall of Man -- we\'re starting to get a better feel for the part military shooter/part sci-fi shooter/part survival horror game. But we wanted to know more, so we went to Insomniac president Ted Price to get his take on where the game came from, how it straddles the line between being a military shooter and not, and the target audience for a game on a $600 system.
1UP: Where did the idea for Resistance first come from? You were walking down the street one day and soldiers and aliens started running around in your head?
Ted Price: When we began brainstorming on what to do for the PS3 a few years ago, we all agreed that we wanted to make a mature first-person shooter. We wanted something dark, but something that also allowed us to take advantage of our love for cool weapons and sci-fi themes.
We started out with a sci-fi concept that doesn\'t really resemble what Resistance: Fall of Man is now. But as more and more folks got involved with the story, characters and backgrounds it evolved into what we have today. The real turning point for us was when we decided to base the game on Earth in the mid 20th century. The juxtaposition of recognizable environments with monstrous creatures in an alternate history setting got many of us jazzed about what we could do with the story. From there we went nuts creating a deep backstory and we hope players will find a compelling in-game story about the Chimera\'s conquest of Asia and Europe.
1UP: Given Insomniac\'s history with Disruptor and Ratchet, do you see Resistance as a spiritual successor to either game? Are there any concepts from those you are consciously attempting to carry over into Resistance?
TP: We\'re not trying to bring specific elements from Ratchet & Clank or Disruptor over into the Resistance: Fall of Man universe. We want each franchise we create to stand out distinctly on its own merits and represent a fresh experience. However, when you look at the collective body of games we\'ve produced at Insomniac, there are some signature traits that we believe make our titles stand out. For example, we think we\'re known for consistently demonstrating well-crafted level design, lush environments, intriguing characters, creative storytelling, and of course, our weapons strategy. We\'re confident the elements that have defined Insomniac\'s games will be readily apparent in Resistance: Fall of Man.
1UP: What can you say about how the game\'s title, Resistance: Fall of Man, relates to the story?
TP: This is a great question. Obviously, we put a great deal of thought into the name of our game and franchise. For "Resistance," there\'s a double meaning involving humanity\'s response to the Chimeran threat, and...well...you\'ll have to wait to learn more. As for "Fall of Man," we\'re referring to how quickly the Chimera has decimated populations in Asia and Europe, and the imminent assimilation of the human race.
1UP: Looking at Resistance\'s concept, it almost seems to be poking fun at itself. It\'s a historical military shooter...but it\'s "not a WWII game." It almost seems like a way to appeal to the audience that likes these sorts of games without really becoming one of them because of the different elements. Would you agree?
TP: Another great question. We didn\'t set out to make a WWII game with a twist. In Resistance: Fall of Man, we\'re trying to create a believable, immersive universe that feels like it really could have taken place on Earth in the 1950s. For example, we\'re supporting this universe with a meticulously detailed outline of watershed 20th century events leading up to July 11, 1951. We\'re creating our own unique fiction and didn\'t want to be limited by strictly human weapons or actual historic events and battles. Out of this world weapons are among the things we do best, and we wanted to take advantage of that in a non-traditional way. Not to take anything away from WWII games, but we think our approach is fresh and gives us many more options to pursue a unique direction.
1UP: How intense will the story be? Will it be serious all the way through, or will there be lighthearted humorous moments followed by intense, dramatic moments?
TP: Well, it\'s safe to say there won\'t be any Sheepination in Resistance: Fall of Man, if that\'s what you\'re asking. Seriously, Resistance: Fall of Man is an intense, bleak and brutal story of the near total annihilation of Asia and Europe in a short period of time by the Chimera. So, don\'t expect to hear any butt jokes or find any Crotchetizers lying around.

1UP: Given Resistance\'s different elements, what other shooter out there would you say it is most similar to? Call of Duty 2? Half-Life 2?
TP: This is a tricky one, because everyone wants to quickly classify our game based on other games they\'ve seen or played before. This has been a little frustrating to us because we\'re going to great lengths to create something unique in Resistance: Fall of Man. We think that once people begin playing the game and experiencing the weapons strategy, story, and diverse interactive environments, they\'ll agree we\'ve done that. What it comes down to is that we\'re creating a military action experience featuring creepy, smart, varied and vicious creatures...and they\'ve got one hell of an arsenal at their disposal. And we\'re going to tell that story in what we think is a stylized, unique manner. More on that at a later date though.
1UP: Between Resistance and Killzone, Sony seems to be building a strong set of first-person shooters to take on a genre that has historically been stronger on Xbox. Do you see games like Halo 3 as your main competition?
TP: First off, in terms of the shooter genre, it\'s important to remember the tremendous success the SOCOM franchise has enjoyed on PlayStation 2. As for whom Insomniac views as our competition for Resistance: Fall of Man, we have a different take on the subject. Our primary objective has always been to simply make games that we ourselves would want to play. That\'s been a rule of ours at Insomniac since the very beginning. So, it doesn\'t matter to us who our competition is as long as we continue making the kinds of games that inspire and challenge us to grow as developers.
1UP: Do you guys and Guerilla ever compare notes on PS3 first-person shooters?
TP: Not really, though we\'ve spoken informally about our PS3 projects. We\'re friends with Guerilla Games, but each studio works on its own projects independently of the other.
1UP: Given that this will be a launch game and the PS3\'s announced system price(s), at least initially it seems like Resistance will be put into the hands of a pretty hardcore audience. Are you doing anything in particular to appeal to that audience?
TP: Insomniac is comprised of hardcore gamers, and many of us are hardcore FPS players. The company\'s roots are in the FPS genre, and we\'ve demonstrated in the Ratchet & Clank franchise that we know how to blow stuff up in unique ways. Combine our experience with what we\'re doing on the PS3 in terms of our proprietary engine, systems and tools, and we think hardcore FPS fans are going to flock to Resistance: Fall of Man.
But what is it that makes hardcore fans happy anyway? When we\'ve talked about that over here we\'ve determined that it\'s all about creating a game with many ways to approach each challenge. In Resistance: Fall of Man, each combat situation can be approached in a lot of different ways with the unique set of weapons we provide. We learned a lot about deep weapons strategy in the Ratchet & Clank series and we\'re bringing that expertise over to Resistance: Fall of Man. With each weapon having multiple uses and often effective when used in combination with others, players can do a lot of experimentation on what works best (and is most enjoyable) against the many different types of enemies in the game. Plus, since each of our enemies has unique behavior as well, effective weapons strategy is pretty essential to making it through the game.

But I think that there are plenty of other things we\'re doing to satisfy hardcore gamers -- things such as providing well-hidden hints about what\'s really going on in the world, offering unique online multiplayer modes with a lot of community support, creating unlockable difficulty levels, and much more.
In other research, we contacted a Russian folklore professor at a prominent university to help us flesh out the backstory for some mysterious, savage characters in our game. Bet you want to know more, huh...
Looks really bland, but it\'s one of the more pushed titles for the PS3 so I\'ll hold some hope.

where\'s the bump mapping?
-
I like this game.
-
yay another FPS
-
im too lazy to read about it, but the reason there\'s a grip of FPS\'s coming out is because theyll actually be decent on the next gen. I HATED FPS\'s on consoles..theyre pieces of shit. They were forced to be linear, aiming is crappy, etc.
But i actually had fun with COD2 and perfect dark on the 360. Aiming is still kinda bad but thats because its a controller.
-
yay another FPS
same here....these fps look ok but i for one hate fps...and now it seems half the games i\'m seein are fps...
-
I have a question. Why the hell didn\'t they ever use the USB ports on the PS2 an allow you to use a mouse and keyboard for FPS games? It never made sense to me. It woudl have been a hell of a lot better.
-

never really thought about that. When madden first came out i bought some random (non-sony) keyboard to help with typing and it worked fine..wonder if you can just plug a mouse in. might feel kinda weird though since a pc has a desk and shit to put the mouse..usually just play consoles in a chair
-
yay another FPS
Same here. I\'m glad I skipped most of the interview once I saw what they were talking about.
Ooh, an FPS that\'s... gritty. Here\'s my money!
Titan, maybe once Nintendo does it they\'ll think of it. ;]

come on guys.....
-
Can\'t argue that. Also goes to show you the success that add-ons achieve.
-
C\'mon . this game looks alot better than when it was first revealed.
The bump... ahhum normal mapping is in there, but a bit more subtle
and it depends on the lighting in each particular scene.
-
peripheral != add-on

Fuck your h-scroll

Beats the shit out of COD2 thats for sure
-
sure
-
Guess it\'s a prerequisite that all FPS aliens boast enormous fangs with no lips, along with the same skin color. At least they\'re wearing clothes. :)
-
Nifty, another FPS and if I wanna play it the way it\'s meant to be played, all I gotta do is buy a mouse and keyboard also!
-
Don\'t troll the game man
-
I wasn\'t.
I was just pointing out it\'s another generic FPS - what\'s to get excited about? Sorry, I\'m burned out on FPS, I couldn\'t even make myself finish HL2 / DOOM 3 /Quake 4.
-
Have you played it ? Have you finished the game ?
Most likely not. You\'re killing off fps gameplay on consoles. GoldenEye ? Halo ? TimeSplitters ? etc.
(your examples are fps games of which the console ports were drab indeed. My examples on the other hand are the console fps games which prove they CAN work marvelously)
wait... Red Steel will be, according to your logic, no good either because it\'s not to be played by means of keyboard + mouse, .. but instead a Wiimote ? Oh noes... that\'s "not the way it\'s meant to be played !"
In other words, don\'t troll this (PS3) game.

How about this for you.
Timesplitters = Boring.
Goldeneye = Good for its time.
Halo = Boring.
Wiimote + Red Steel = Boring. I never once mentioned Red Steel, hell I don\'t even reference Red Steel when I talk about the Wii. Why? Because it\'s also just another generic FPS. These things have been a dime a dozen for the past three generations now.
Or...To make this even easier for you to understand.
FPS genre altogether = stale and boring.
In other words, get back to me when you have a clue what I was talkin\' about and don\'t try to every single post I do as a biased against the "(PS3)".
:thumb:
-
Don\'t troll the game man
I don\'t know if you\'ve noticed, but LIC isn\'t the only one that has been "trolling" the game.
-
I don\'t know if you\'ve noticed, but LIC isn\'t the only one that has been "trolling" the game.
He apparently has selective reading.
-
And how about this for you then (usually i don\'t adress to anyone with such a strange line) ;
Assumptions, false assumptions.
You were writing off fps\'s just like that. Because the games i mentioned are not in \'your book of what are fun games\', the ones i mentioned are still regarded as fps quality games on consoles.
I pointed out this particular one and Red Steel as prime new examples which will solidify the genre on consoles.
And i don\'t need any other way of special description of your earlier post \'as if\' it was \'too difficult\' to me. Thanks but no thanks for the generous offer.
And Phil... if he\'s not the ONLY one trolling the game ; then you basically admit that there is in fact \'trolling\' going on in this thread by more than one person ; which all goes against the board rules, as listed.
-
I pointed out this particular one and Red Steel as prime new examples which will solidify the genre on consoles.
No, you implied that I thought Red Steel would offer something, you attempted to imply that I was biased towards the Wii and therefor would excuse RED Steel for being yet another FPS.
You just wanted to make a big deal out of nothing. Take a look at the thread, there are plenty of people NOT EXCITED about YET ANOTHER FPS.
Get over it. You want to be excited, okay, fine. We don\'t want to be, okay, fine.
Move on.
-
No no no and no.
You are displaying the same selective reading you accuse me of.
From the top of my head, Red Steel and Resistance were the fps\'s
i could list as good examples. (And there\'s at least the threadstarter + me excited about this game and i\'m looking forward to Red Steel as well)
but for the sake of argument ; if it were such an imply than it would be nothing more than the board rules as listed ; which.. is not a bad thing.
-
Alright - how about this one.
It\'s Console Discussion.
Let\'s discuss.
What makes this FPS so much more interesting than any other FPS on the market?
-
And Phil... if he\'s not the ONLY one trolling the game ; then you basically admit that there is in fact \'trolling\' going on in this thread by more than one person ; which all goes against the board rules, as listed.
*sigh*, knotter, buddy, I put trolling in quotes because I (and most everyone else here) don\'t see it as trolling. I was merely using your words. Most of us here are tired of FPS, they are stale, they offer very little in inovation and this game is a prime example. Lets put in aliens into a WWII game (WWII games are already hyper saturated in the market as is), throw in a few "new" weapons and sell it to the masses. Woohoo . I\'m sorry but aliens, gritty atmosphere, and WWII have all been done before, putting them together does not constitute new or exciting.
Edit: Oh and for future reference, if you want to know what trolling is, look at clowd\'s posts.
-
the character design really sucks in this game
-
What makes this FPS so much more interesting than any other FPS on the market?
Weapon design should be what makes Resistance stand out. 32 player online should make a good impression as well.
plus its Insomniac, and their history dictates they just know how to make a fun game.
I\'ll buy this one at launch (If I get a PS3 at launch) simply because it\'s an Insomniac game, and they deliver.
but other then that will just have to wait and see. In the latest interviews I\'ve read they keep saying that there game will have elements that seperate it from other FPS, but they will wait before they divulge too much too soon.
-
Weapon design? Oh come on........
32 player online? Welcome to PC gaming.
but other then that will just have to wait and see. In the latest interviews I\'ve read they keep saying that there game will have elements that seperate it from other FPS, but they will wait before they divulge too much too soon.
Also known as the old, "we have nothing new to show" trick.
-
Ok, so maybe people are not interested in it, whatever the game will be ; that\'s no reason to write it off like that or dissing it.
Anyway, IGN had a pretty good interview with Insomniac\'s Ted Price. Some highlights :
The Bulls-Eye\'s primary fire is similar to a traditional assault rifle, but with some cool tracer effects. The secondary fire mode allows you to paint a target, change your position on the battlefield and still hit your mark no matter where you move. We call that tagging. The Bulls-Eye\'s tertiary fire mode, trapping, can almost be divided into two mini-modes. For example, you can create a swarm of bullets and detonate them from a concealed location when an unsuspecting group of enemies moves into the swarm. Or, you can direct the swarm of bullets around the battlefield until you choose to unleash them on some hapless baddies.
I\'ve always loved the proximity mines in GoldenEye and these alternate firing modes seem to recapture that great feeling.
IGN: Will you incorporate the new six-axis tilt controller function?
Price: Yes, Resistance: Fall of Man will incorporate the tilt-y, sense-o-rama type controller. Details to come.
That may turn out neglegible but it may just as well turn out as something very cool.
And yeah... it just looks different than games like UT2007, Halo3 while also not the same as WW2 shooters.
So, all i\'m saying is that Red Steel and this game are imho good examples of promising fps titles on next gen consoles. Give it a chance.
-
A few more Ted Price quotes:
"Sometimes you\'ll be in the midst of a large battle surrounded by 30 or more allies."
"Resistance: Fall of Man will indeed have more destructible environment parts that ultimately affect gameplay decisions. Players will not be able to hide comfortably behind a lot of the cover objects in the game because they\'ll either chip, splinter, shatter, or be shot away in varying rates based on the weapons firing at it. Plus, we\'ll be littering the environments with a lot more moveable or breakable objects -- stuff which not only makes the world more believable but a lot more chaotic during combat."
"In Resistance: Fall of Man, players will experience a greater variety of environments than is typical for FPS games. As we\'ve done in all of our past games, we\'re placing a strong emphasis on presenting fresh backgrounds as players progress. Our environment team has been taking full advantage of our proprietary rendering engine to create some very cool open levels including larger, more open and interactive environments - huge battlefields, canyons, and massive Chimeran structures among other things."
"The "Hero Moments" in Resistance: Fall of Man give players the chance to alter the course of a firefight by saving allies from certain death or letting them suffer a horrible fate. At E3, we showed our Leapers ambushing several hapless British soldiers, and a large Gray Jack strangling another ally. It\'s up to you how to react to these gameplay situations. You can shoot the Leapers off the soldiers\' backs, or watch as they stab their pincers straight through your buddies\' skulls. For the most part, "Hero Moments" occur organically throughout the levels, though their onset may be triggered by a scripted sequence. Chimeran enemies will have their own unique attacks, allowing for a wider variety of "Hero Moments" throughout the course of the game.
At this point in development, the primary reason for saving a buddy is to keep him in the fight longer. Since there will be hordes of enemies, the more allies you have at your disposal, the better. Allies will also recognize your heroics (or lack thereof) with various comments. We\'re looking at other cool enhancements to our "Hero Moments," so check back with us closer to launch."
-
Weapon design? Oh come on........
32 player online? Welcome to PC gaming.
Also known as the old, "we have nothing new to show" trick.
We\'re not talking PC gaming, and 32 player online is very new to consoles. heck the Xbox 360 hasn\'t done it yet, so it\'ll be an accomplishment. But the weapons they\'ve dscribed sound like a heluva alot of fun, you should read the article. They go into depth about the different levels of destructable cover, and creating cover etc....
But you are just one negative bitch these days aren\'t ya. It\'s Insomniac, I believe they\'ll have some fun elements in their game... I mean that is why we play, for fun right. Sometimes I\'m not to sure about this when I read peoples posts.
I guess what Insomniac is saying is good enough for me, and it makes me happy. Its a 1st person shooter, if you don\'t like them anymore don\'t play them. I only play a couple here and there, so a 1st person shooter for launch will work for me, because I just don\'t play them all.
IMO you\'ve burnt yourself out on video games and nothing really satisfies you anymore. Everything has been done and thee is rarely something for you to be happy and excited about. I\'m Glad I haven\'t reached that point, but then again I don\'t play 1/10 the games most of you play. If I played games the way some of you do, I\'d be so burnt out I don\'t think I could play another game in my lifetime.
-

Wrong. Try again. I still enjoy plenty of games.
-
Whatever the outcome of all these sub or mini discussions ; i think we all can agree that it\'s pretty pointless to write off or flame this Resistance game before it\'s even released.
-
OK, we\'ll wait. ;]
For people tired of the genre, adding a few more players online or adding another type of automated turret gun doesn\'t lift the genre out of its rut. It\'s just been done to death.
Personally, I wouldn\'t know how to innovate within the genre without relying on the Wii control scheme to do so...
-Dan
-
i think the problem is that the people who disliked fps are the one\'s posting in this thread, while the people that do like it are..silent?.....in any case regardless of how i feel about fps..one thing we can agree on is that there is a huge fan base for these types of games, it\'s just that for me personally, every game of this type just seems like a carbon copy of the next fps...
-
how to add to the FPS genre?
add "encounters" instead of the traditional "run and gun"
force the player to have to figure out how to progress without shooting your gun
i.e. half life 2, and especially half life 2 episode 1.
-
^ nice point mm, kinda why i like the Tom Clancy games so much.
It\'s refreshing to plan out your attack and use stealth, even if it means avoiding action, just because you know you\'re overwhlemed.
I think the main obstacle FPS\'s have to overcome is predictability & AI.
-
I want a new Thief game....
-
i want a new PC Thief game that isn\'t a crippled console port
-
If you want a new stealth game I suggest Hitman Bloodmoney on a fast PC ; this game\'s great.
and no, the demo is by no means a fair indicator to the game itself...
-
already played and beat it
far too easy to get silent assassin on pro level

Half Life 2 was good (not sure about this episode 1 part?), I never did finish it tho\'.
The FPS genre as of late has been NOTHING but throw enemy in front, let player shoot. Of course they add the newest graphic details, make the weapons abit different. Just like it use to be a big deal when they added those god forsaken driving levels in the middle of the game. It\'s just old. Not even Eik\'s suggest for the Wii-mote would help the genre, it\'s still the same ole\' thing.
As for the comment about not liking FPS, not true. I loved FPS...In the 90\'s..
;)
-
but how is any existing genre different?
they\'re all different looking characters against different looking enemies running thru different looking levels.
hell, even puzzle games are stagnant.
and no, a gimmick controller is not the answer
-
Most current genres do bore me, personally. They\'re either stale or they at least appear that way.
I\'m all for innovation or being different. I was psyched for Pikmin and the first Monkey Ball. The first Wario Ware. I loved the demos of Indigo Prophecy and Shadows of the Colossus. And even though I never looked into it, I bet Katamari would have been a good cause. I even picked up my first DDR mat.
The DS has most consistently kicked developers\' retread habits and it was its "gimmick controller" that inspired a lot of the innovation.
You can latch onto the "gimmick" wagon all day long, but until we see what developers do with it, your guess is as good as mine. Or, worse. ;]

Fair enough

I couldn\'t of said it better. At least with the "gimmick" controller, developers are faced with the ability to do something different. As you mentioned, the DS is a perfect example of this. The Wii may end up with the least amount of third party support, but I feel that the third party games that do arrive, for the most part, should be something special. -shrugs-
-
Wrong. Try again. I still enjoy plenty of games.
Alright, but then there are just different strokes for different folks. To me I can still have fun with a 1st person shooter, and so can 10\'s of millions of other gamers.
From what I read I think Resistance will be a much better game then you feel it will, but then again what might be new and cool for me will probably be old hat for you. You\'ve overplayed 1st person shooters and they do little for you, you have burnt yourself out on them. Sure one might come along that will finally re-spark your interest, but overall the majority of 1st person shooters and games in general are never going to live up to your expectations. They will bring lots of fun to manyh other gamers, and that\'s all that counts for those persons.
For me, I find 1st person shooters to be mostly cookie cutter probducts, but I really don\'t expect to many huge genre defining changes in a 1st person shooter. What I expect from a 1st person shooter is a 1st person shooter, and the ones I do play are usually ones that just prove to be fun to play. I\'ll get Resistance at launch primarily based upon Insomniac merit as a Dev i am willing to support, knowing they will try to bring some interesting twists to their game.

but how is any existing genre different?
they\'re all different looking characters against different looking enemies running thru different looking levels.
hell, even puzzle games are stagnant.
and no, a gimmick controller is not the answer
this is pretty much the way I see it. There is very little room for re-defining many genere\'s.
and many games that try to re-define or create a new genre don\'t do well and drag an entire company under with them.
There is no denying games have become stagnant, but many games still deliver great experiences.
Myself, I don\'t play nearly as many games as the rest of you\'s, but the games I do play are usually high on most everyones list. I don\'t have many crappy gaming experiences.

Other genres can get away with this. Take for example the racing genre, all they do is add new tracks, better graphics and better physics - it helps the game. A solid platforming game, all it really needs is decent puzzles and great platforming sections and it\'ll do fine. However, with the FPS you are yet another faceless solider fightin\' against aliens or maybe your in WWII, either way, it\'s just all the same. Some genres can get away with it and some can\'t.
Oh and get off the \'gimmick\' bandwagon, please. No one mentioned the Wii-mote, infact, I said that it wouldn\'t help the FPS genre.

I like the collecting charisma or fame mode in the game, if you gain certain heroic points, more soldiers will come to your aid.I hope we can give simple commands like "cover this area" while i search for the key or something.
What set this game apart from other ps2 FPS games is the war against aliens theme. We have many infact too many clones of realistic war FPS,i think a lot of people are getting bored with the same old story.
Anyway , the bad guy with machine guns, those are soldiers captured and had their genes deviated by the aliens.
