Besides defending the PS3, Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular he said the Linux-based operating system on the console\'s hard drive will have enough processing power and non-gaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft\'s Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

Um...no. I\'ll stick with my PC. Thanks.
-
what\'s so funny?
-
His doubt, I guess. I have no idea how well the PS3 will do as a PC. I guess we\'ll have to wait and see.
-
a company rep hyping his product is funny?
-
His claim is a bit obsurd, but I didn\'t laugh. I more or less scoffed.
-
Heh. I had no reaction, but then laughed when I read the word scoffed.
If browsing the net included email, I could almost imagine using that from time to time.
Which reminds me... my Xbox Live signs off my computer... I gotta straighten that out.
-
at least say something reasonable like "it will blow the revolution and 360 out of the water" er something. Saying something like it will make the PC obsolete just makes the general public see how full of crap people like this guy are.
-
now a sony rep saying "it will blow the revolution and 360 out of the water" would be funny to me.
-
and saying it will make a PC obselete is more realistic to you? instead of trying to put ur competition down to show ur better. politics man..
-
Perhaps they\'d prefer not to name drop the competition. If I\'m Nintendo, I don\'t want the word "PlayStation" anywhere in my press release, etc.

1)Mistranslation
2)I ve read somewhere else that what he said is that the PS3 is a computer than can be used for many PC functions and play games in one device not that it will replace the PCs or that it makes them outdated as you have said in the thread\'s title
-
PS3 supposedly runs linux
add in a keyboard, mouse, and it\'s.....a PC?
that\'s unpossible!
-
I could see myself messing around with it as a computer from time to time. Don\'t see myself replacing my laptop with it. Eh, we\'ll see how it runs and maybe I\'ll use it as a supplement to my laptop. I just have a lot of media and stuff on my laptop I never want to get rid of it :)
-
whelp wasn\'t the ps2 called a computer entertainment system?....i won\'t go as far as to say that this thing will replace the pc *it won\'t*..but you gotta understand that this has been sony\'s thing all along,...to have the all in one media center,...anybody with half a brain knows that the ps3 is not gonna replace the pc....
-
The statement really depends on what you use your computer for. Anyone who uses their computer for 30+ min a day, downloading, photoshoping, burning, etc, will continue to use a stand alone. If you are just some email/gmail/yahoonews browser, there\'s no reason the PS3 or any other simple standalone couldn\'t replace your computer.
There\'s still no way any console will replace the PC in the majority of the market, however.
-
It\'s a bold and defensive statement indeed.
However, that recent laboratory comparison on Cell pit against Cray X1, Itanium & Opteron in scientific apps benchmarks :
Cell whipes the floor with both Opteron and Itanium and is about on par with Cray X1.
Of course, the PS3 will have to prove by means of games, putting this massive computing power to efficient & effective use.
