I know there was another thread about this game, but that thread seemed to dissolve into arguments about the Xbox 360 version vs. PC version. I gathered most were considering the PC version, so I decided to post in this forum.
I\'m spending a lot of time with this game, so it seems I\'m getting my money\'s worth. According to my save file, I\'m at about 36 playing hours, and from what I\'ve heard, I could be spending 4x that by the time I\'m finished.
I currently have a level 8 wood elf, and I\'ve been spending most of my time leveling my sneak, marksman, and alchemy skills. I am a walking medicine cabinet of potions and poisons. Looking forward to leveling my Alchemy again so I can start making super poisons. Poisoned arrows are teh shiat. My Restoration and Destruction skills are reasonably good for now, but I need to somehow raise my conjuration, mysticism, and illusion skills. I could really use an increase in armorer and mercantile, but those seem to improve so slowly. Some of my skills are so stunted, it\'s sort of pathetic. I guess I need to start solving problems in a different way to broaden my skills.
I know I want to join the Thieve\'s Guild and Dark Brotherhood at some point to sample their missions, but I don\'t know if that will hurt my standing in the legit guilds. I am currently an associate of the Mage\'s Guild, collecting recommendations from all the cities to become a genuine member. Does anyone have any insight?
I could ask few more questions, but I\'ll leave it alone for now.

not to derail your thread or piss on your parade, but i\'m having a really hard time enjoying this game. Maybe I need to start over with a different character type.
-
It\'s difficult to reply to that. What about it do you dislike?

I loved the game, untill hitman came out.
I had pretty much finished all guilds and only had some of the main story left to to. I was a battlemage. Still think nothing beats a battlemage...

A buddy of mine owns it for the 360 and we\'ve logged about a 100 hours into it. All other games ceased to exist, same with school work. If I had payed the 60 for it I\'d feel I got every pennies worth.
Right now all we have left is a couple thieves guild missions and about half of the fighters guild. Even with the main quest done there still feels like theres a lot to the game. Maybe it\'s not for everyone but I\'ve loved it.

I have two characters - one an assassin and the other a knight - both over level 20 and I have to say the assassin was way easier to level than the knight. Sneak and Marksmanship are way overpowered.
My knight is GM of both the mages guild and the fighters guild and my assassin has finished all the dark brotherhood quests, but has done none of the mage or fighter guild quests. I too am curious about what reaction the two main guilds (mage and fighter) will have to some of the Dark Brotherhood missions. My guess is if you don\'t get caught doing them - ie. murdering people and stay out of jail you should be ok.
The fighters guild has some good rewards for heavy armor wearers and if you become GM you get a really nice perk. You get an ok one for the mages guild, but not nearly as good as the fighters guild. IMO for your class the Dark Brotherhood has the best rewards if you complete all of their quests.

Just got the game yesterday finally and played for about 5 hours straight. I made a Nordic Knight.

I agree, my sneak and marksman skills leveled so fast it\'s ridiculous. The only thing leveling fast seems to be alchemy. BTW:
I can\'t figure out how to get more advanced alchemical tools. I need apprentice or journeyman mortar & pestle, calcinator, retort, etc. Even though I\'m a journeyman, I can\'t find the gear in towns or in the mage\'s guild.
Also: What\'s the use of mithril armor? I replaced my normal chain curiass, grieves and gauntlets with mithril chain equivalents, and I don\'t see the benefit. They weigh more, cost more (though mine were free :)) and they don\'t give any armor benefit over normal chain mail. What gives?

A truly next generation game comes out and you complain. Go figure.
Anyways, back on topic, I\'ve picked the game up. Not logged a lot of time into it, simlpy because I am trying to get my main character in CoV to level 50, already invested around two hundred hours in that. Plan on gettin\' ready to more Oblivion soon tho\'.
What\'s the best class?
-
truly next gen? how so?
-
truly next gen? how so?
Graphics.
Physics.
Gameplay.
Open ended gameplay.
Every media review says it is next gen, the mass public agree that it is the only game out now that truly says "next gen". You\'re out numbered on this one. It\'s once again, a case of you just tryin\' to find something to complain about because it\'s the \'cool\' thing to do.
-
oblivion = morrowind + 15%
it\'s the RPG equivalent of EA\'s madden football
never played "king\'s field"?
"next gen" = marketing phrase
it\'s a fallacy
and once again, you try and argue with me cause it\'s the challenging thing to do.

What do you expect from next generation? It is an evolution. Give me a break.
Yes, I remember King\'s Field quite fondly, thank you. I love how bring up games as if you are part of some "leet" group who only know what they are.
I\'m not trying to argue with you because "it\'s the challenging thing to do", but because you bash anything remotely popular. It\'s as if you\'re the only one in the world right, even though every media outlet has praised Oblivion for being one thing, "next generation".

always listen to the media outlets?
shame

How about this.
In North America, Oblivion has become the fastest selling game released on the Xbox 360. The NPD Group Inc reports Oblivion PC as the best selling PC game, while the Oblivion Collectors Edition is ranked number 2.
NPD reports that Oblivion represented approximately 13% of all PC game sales in the first week of it release, more than four times the sales volume of the next best selling title. (The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the highly-regarded predecessor to Oblivion, remains one of the top 25 best selling PC games nearly four years after its release, according to NPD). European results have been similarly strong with Oblivion quickly becoming ranked the number one selling title in the UK, Germany and France.

Sales = King.
It has nothing to do with listening to media outlets. It has to do with you being almost the only person to say that Oblivion sucks and is not "next generation". It would stand to reason, that yes, in your opinion isn\'t all that, but in the media\'s view and apparently the publics due to the numerous sales and what not, that in reality, the game is above average, infact excellent.
-
13% of all PC games? what else was released that week, i simply don\'t care enough to look.
look how well pokemon games sell, they must be god\'s gift to gaming
-
What\'s the best class?
I considered choosing one of the preexisting classes, but none of them seemed to have the ideal skill assortment. Fortunately you can define your own class and choose any attributes and skills that you want. The choice of "birthsign" is pretty important too, so take some time to read all the choices.
You might want to just choose a character quickly, then play one session to see what skills you like and don\'t like. I don\'t know what recommendations to give you because it sort of depends on how you like to play. As Giga said, I sort of gravitated toward the quicker thief / assassin type character with light armor and strong marksman skills. It would be very easy to go in another direction instead.

It\'s amazing how you use "sales = king" , but when turned against you it is no longer valid.

oh, is oblivion a console?
i must really be missing something

It has nothing to do with consoles or not. You dance around the subject way to much. The same thing applies for any product, sales equal king. Not to mention the high reviews are more than the negative reviews. Typically, if you are in the minority, you are wrong.;)
-
misinterpretation does not give you an advantage in any argument
-
There\'s a difference between sales as in raw numbers, and market percentage for a week. Sales = raw volume numbers. % = dependant on what\'s out there. You could have 50% of a really slow market and it\'s not as impressive as 25% of a stunningly hot week.
WOW sold 200K copies first day, over 500K after a week. Even games like Unreal Tournament won the % race, but it\'s numbers weren\'t that impressive (cause of all the crap available at the time).
Now, if that 13% marketshare is of a week where lots of PC games sold well, then yes, that\'s an impressive amount.

There is no misinterpretation, there is only you, trying to be the oh so mighty cool one who has to bash anything remotely popular...
Don\'t you have some criterions to watch?
;)
-
i\'m completely shocked you know what criterions are
no, really.

Own a few. Love the fact that people collect them just to appear intelligent. Not saying that is what you do, just visit any DVD site and you\'ll see countless \'Criterion-drones\' ( as I call \'em) bragging about their collection..That\'s off-topic tho\'.
Oh yeah, Oblivion = next gen.
;)
-
cause the mass media tells you so
tsk tsk
especially when it could run on ancient geforce 4xxx cards. yeah, real next-gen
go go better graphics with identical gameplay
-
I don\'t even know what "next gen" means, but I suspect it has a different definition for a console vs. PC platform. PCs are continuously developing, so the concept of "generations" does not really apply to them. Just because the PC version of a game can run on moderate hardware requirements, does not mean the console version of the same game is not "next-gen."
By the way, I was hoping people would discuss the game in this thread, not bicker about platforms. So much for that.
-
it\'s a buzz word that should have died in the 32 bit era, and nothing more

Here ya go....
I\'m a vampire and it\'s really annoying me.
Also, I really regret just making a generic knight. I\'m considering starting over as something else, but I REALLY don\'t wanna start over.
-
I started as a wood elf, which has a high natural resistance to disease. I think that\'s why I didn\'t contract the vampire disease. I even cleaned out a cave full of vampires, and didn\'t get infected. Of course I didn\'t let them get very close to me, thanks to the Dwarven Bow + poisoned arrows. :)
