The Story
June 21, 2006 - On October 17, 1849, Frederic Chopin, one of the most influential composers for the piano, succumbed to sickness and died at the young age of 39.
Three hours prior to that, in the world according to Bandai Namco, Chopin, crouched on the floor of his hospital, saw a dream. The dream had anime characters that looked like they were out of a Tales game and a world that looked like it was pulled from a fairy tale. In the dream, people carried about their lives like in the real world. But in the dream world, people with incurable sicknesses had magical powers.
Bandai Namco\'s new Xbox 360 RPG, Trusty Bell: Chopin\'s Dream ("Chopin no Yume" for the Japanese version) takes place in this dream world. Chopin (yes, the composer) comes into contact with Polka, a young girl who resides with her mother in the village of Tenuto (the names, you\'ll find, are all musical terms). Polka is near her death, meaning she\'s got some crazy powers. Unfortunately, people believe that by touching her, they\'ll be infected with her koodies, so Polka\'s not particularly popular.
Trusty Bell is the story of Chopin (yes, the composer), Polka, and a Allegretto, a 16-year-old who steals to eat and lives for only one thing: to help Polka.
If Trusty Bell were called Tales of Something-or-other, no one would complain. The game has the absurd premise, peculiar names and colorful artwork of Namco\'s biggest RPG series. Plus, musical composition is being handled by Motoi Sakuraba, of Tales of fame.
Trusty Bell will also feature a battle system that\'s heavy on the action. Details are scarce, but based on the screenshots currently circling exclusively in Japan\'s Famitsu magazine, the battle system supports three characters (including an unknown male character called Beat) and features some sort of combo system. Allegretto makes use of a sword as his primary weapon while Polka, being a cheery girl character and all, resorts to an umbrella.
Music and story look like they will play a big part in Trusty Bell. Bandai Namco has drafted famous Japanese actor Leo Morimoto to perform narration for the game\'s Japanese version. Performing the piano numbers that Chopin left to the world (before having his RPG dream) will be Russian pianist Stanislav Bunin.
Trusty Bell is in development at tri-Crescendo, a studio that worked on the sound components of tri-Ace titles like Radiata Stories, Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile and also worked on programming, sound and the battle system for Baten Kaitos, along side Monolith Soft . The game is currently without a final release date in Japan.

I love the art style. It\'s beautiful. The story...well, I\'m sure it will be interesting.

I thought RPGs would become less linear as the hardware progressed but it looks like I was wrong.
-
The linearity of RPG\'s hasn\'t changed in decades, why would they change this generation?

Erm, I thought the whole point of an RPG is to tell a story...which requires some bit of direction...no?
-
I personally cannot stomach games that have this type of "cutesy" look.
it could be the greatest game in the world and I wouldn\'t be able to get past the artistic direction. This particualr RPG represents the style that turns me off of Japanese RPG\'s

Thank you for sharing that.
Glad you refuse to play games, just because of a certain "look".

There are 100\'s and even 1000\'s of games to play. Even with that many games still available to me outside of Eastern RPG\'s, I still couldn\'t play 75% of the games I would want to. it is very easy to write off Eastern Styled RPG\'s for a mutitude of personal reasons, and it is very easy for me to fill that void with lots of other games that fit my style.
I find the art direction, and character design to be too cute, unexciting, and for lack of a better word... really lame. I can not identify with this style of game. But Character design and art direction in Eastern Styled RPG\'s have always been a big turn off for me. If the game isn\'t going to draw me in and make me excited to play it then I\'ll move on to the next one.
I never said you couldn\'t play it or get excited about it though. Pleasse feel free. I was just putting out feelers to see who agrees with my point of view in regards to the art style and Eastern styled RPG\'s.
-
they should change the name to "Gay - the gay RPG"
-
I forgot - as male gamers it\'d be "gay" to play a game with bright colors.
-shrugs-
Either way, I like the art direction. The gameplay may suck, but the art direction is nice.

Your trolling has reached an all time low.
Go back to playing games that lack any art direction what so ever, other than the typical "modern, black and grey look". Me, I\'ll play whatever seems appealing and this, seems appealing. The art looks a lot like Kolona 2, which rocked.

(the game still looks gay and would me feel uncomfortable to play it)
wtf is Kolona 2?
aren\'t you tired of platformers, btw?

I agree 100% with Ddaryl. I can\'t stand japanese games that are saturated with this cutesy happy sappy "kawaii" style that looks like it was designed for (or by) a 12 year old japanese schoolgirl. Maybe it\'s a cultural variance between Japan and the United States, but I think it\'s more a generational difference.
I grew up with Space Wars, the Atari 2600, Intellivision, Atari vector arcade games, and Karate Champ. By the time anyone in the US had heard the word "Nintendo," I was in college and didn\'t have time for gaming. Therefore I never owned an NES or SNES or whatever they are called. I didn\'t come back to computer games until I graduated and had more free time and money. Meanwhile I think you younger guys were initiated into gaming in a different way than I was. To you, perhaps the cutesy japanese RPGs are an important element of your gaming history, so you will always view them favorably. To me they just look bizarre and nutty. I view them with the same detachment as an old Donald Duck cartoon.
-
I\'ll agree with mm and ddaryl that it seems gay and too cutesy happy look to it. I mean, this would be an awesome game if I was high or tripping on shrooms but it doesn\'t do anything for me. It does look interesting though. I\'m not one for RPGs anyway. They\'re fun to play sometimes but they really have to appeal to me. This just seems a bit too cutesy for me.

You don\'t remember Kolona 2? Get back to me when you get a clue. It was a highly rated platformer for the PS2. Damn fine game, one of the few good PS2 games.
Tired of platformers - no.
Aren\'t you tired of every other genere?
-yawn-
-
I think platformers are another artifact of a younger generation that I can\'t relate to. The last platformer that I played was perhaps Donkey Kong (1981) or Ghosts \'N Goblins (1985). Platformers are just as frustrating and boring to me today as they where back then. It doesn\'t help that the vast majority of platformers are also cutesy and sappy.
-
LIC, apparantly you don\'t remember it that well because it was called Klonoa 2
i\'m tired of all console games.
(katamati and like 90% of the dreamcast library excluded)

Younger generation?
What are you smoking?
I love the logic that unless it has violence, that it can\'t be fun and it\'s all for the children.
As for the "Kolona 2" - sooooooooo sorry I mis-spelled it. Still doesn\'t change the fact you\'re a troll that can get by with it due to the fact your an Admin.
;)

I think you didn\'t read my post above. I wasn\'t trying to say that platformers are "only for children" although I do think they are mostly designed for children.
What I said was that since you are younger than me, you grew up with Nintendo and cutesy platformers, and I did not. Therefore you have a history of accepting that as a fun game, and I do not. We come from different origins.

Point taken.
At least someone knows how to voice their opinion without comin\' off as a troll.

stop crying, please.
it\'s shameful
it must be tough not being able to accept an opposing opinion.
i prefer the "not caring" and "indifferent" approach to console gaming commentary
replace the guns in GTA3 with water pistols, think it would be as much fun?
take link\'s sword away, and hand the kid a stick. lots of good times there.
violence in some form = mass gaming appeal.
-
If you\'ve played one Japanese RPG you\'ve played them all.
American RPGs FTW

ah now you\'re dating yourself :D
I fell in love with Final Fight first time I played it in a dimly lit, smoky arcade. Then it was Bad Dudes, and Double Dragon...
I just can\'t relate to these RPGs at all. Only one I can stand is the Zelda series, but many argue it\'s not a "true" RPG but an action rpg. Even then it gets annoying with all the jibber jabber of fake characters. I just wanna make something bleed!!!!!11111111
PS-lol look what I just found: http://www.everyvideogame.com/play-nes-Bad_Dudes_(U).htm

Take Link\'s sword away and give him a stick and yes, it\'s still a great game. That doesn\'t change a thing.
As for GTA3, it just sucked to begin with.
Quit trolling please.

I hope you weren\'t calling me out. I didn\'t want to troll. I was just offering my honest perspective of this style of game.
If I threw this thread off track, my bad... I appologize. I am a bad person

You\'re evil.
And no, I was talkin\' to MM.
-
As much as I hate agreeing with mm, I have to in this case. Like the others in this thread I can\'t stand that \'cutesy\' look. I might miss a good game on that account, but so be it.
-
Homophobia at its finest
I better not play that game, I might catch the gay

Glad we can call a game boring now, simply because of a handful of screenshots.

it doesn\'t take much.
let me know when you need more insight.

Perhaps this game isn\'t being marketed to you....
It\'s smart of Microsoft and the 360 team (through pressure, I\'m sure) to be getting some RPG titles out that will appeal to the japanese market before the PS3 launches.
-
meh i like rpg\'s(i\'m mostly sports & horror/adventure) but it really depends on the theme of it...if the story line geared more toward it being on the mature side,...i\'ll be into it,...shadow hearts was pretty decent, of course ff-7 was great,...and i\'ve yet to finish xenogears,,:p...and i probably won\'t at this point...but i did like kingdom hearts and i\'m in the process of finishing up kingdom hearts 2....but just to add as far as the art direction goes for this game...it looks good, it might be a tad too colorful, but i guess that\'s the look they were goin for...

I\'d have to agree. IMO this is a broadening of what MS has to offer.

Xenogears was by far my favorite RPG of the PS1 generation.

Ahm....although this game doesnt pull my interest yet, I dont think bashing it without any serious arguements is wise.

I think you meant to say incentive (i.e. a truckload of money).
I really don\'t know how else to explain all the RPG support from Japan. There are 3 from Mistwalker (Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Cry On). There are two from Namco Bandai (Trusty Bell, and another from the \'Tales of..\' team), and then another from Tri-Ace(Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile, etc) that hasn\'t been announced yet, but that last one is being published by MS. Then there are other less high profile rpgs on the way...Two Worlds and Culdcept Saga come to mind, but there are more. Nevermind the other RPGs like Jade Empire 2, KoTOR 3, Fable 2, and Mass Effect are on the way as well. :D
