I was wondering if there was a program that you can take an mp3 file and split it to make a ringtone. My phone uses mp3 for ringtones and Cingular charges 2 bucks for them. Shit, for 2 bucks I can buy two songs off the internet. That\'s a rip. So I don\'t have to pay for it, I want to take music I already have on CD (I\'d have to rip it to my computer) or mp3 files I have and make my own ringtones. What\'s a good program to do this?

cdex, well for dumping mp3s.
goldwave for editing.

Dumping mp3s? If you\'re talking about ripping them from CDs, I just use Windows Media Player. It does a fine job for me.
Is Goldwave free for download off a website?

If you are starting with an mp3, there are all sorts of programs that will convert the mp3 to uncompressed WAV format. (I think ITunes and WinAmp can both do this) You can then edit the WAV file and cut it into smaller pieces using many different programs. (I use SoundForge, but there are certainly all sorts of free progams out there) Then you can recovert the smaller WAV file into mp3 using a typical ripper program combo like Exact Audio Copy + LAME.
I don\'t know of any programs that allow you to edit the mp3 file directly, but maybe there are some out there.

I think Goldwave converts everything to WAV before editing, but that\'s transcoding to a lossless format so I wouldn\'t be worried about quality loss.
Also recommend that program, which will popup an annoying buy now window after a month or two of use. It\'s akward to use at first, but very powerful too.

I really could care less about quality loss. They are just going on my cellphone as a ringtone.
Thanks for the help guys. I\'ll try this when I have time and tell you how it goes :)

Aight, I visited the link. I downloaded it but going to lunch soon so won\'t have time before then to install and fuck around and decide which song I want on my phone. But then there is another problem. My computer is not Bluetooth ready yet. I could have had it when I bought it to have a chip inside for it but I said to myself "screw bluetooth, I\'ll never use it". Heh, silly me. Now I have to either find a USB drive for bluetooth or a media card for the expansion slot in my laptop. I couldn\'t find the things at Staples so next time I\'m in Best Buy or Circuit Shitty I\'ll pick it up (should be soon since I am buying a TV from one of them).

Aight, I finally had a chance to really sit down and cut songs apart. Good program. I think I\'m gonna keep it. you have that key gen I could use?
BTW, I created my first ringtone. "Over My Head" by The Fray. Just gotta get a blue-tooth thing so I can transfer it from my computer to my phone.
